‘Legend of Neil’ Debuts Their Musical Episode

legend-of-neil-felicia-dayThose who aren’t watching The Legend of Neil, the comedy web series spoofing the Legend of Zelda videogame, are absolutely missing out on a great time. The show was created and directed by Sandeep Parikh, who played Zaboo on the critically acclaimed web series The Guild, co-starring Whedon-favorite Felicia Day.

This show is about a regular screw up who gets sucked into the Zelda game and is not often confused for the main character. Antics ensue. The series originally started a year ago, then got picked up by Atom Films, a partner of Comedy Central.

The first season is out on DVD or online here, but season two seems to be where the action is. Episode 3 just went live, and it’s….a musical! The idea of an online musical seems a bit familiar, but it’s still a pretty impressive episode nonetheless. Each episode airs on Atom.com every Sunday and soon to be released on Comedy Central once the season is over.

First Trailer for ‘Youth in Revolt’

youthinrevoltMichael Cera has lately been getting a bad rap. He has seemingly fallen from grace and lately gone the way of Bill Heder and playing the same role over and over. Since his jump to stardom with Arrested Development and Superbad, Cera has gotten the role of the nervous lead nearly half a dozen times.

However, all may not be lost as it looks like things may just be changing for him — at least judging by the first trailer for his latest film Youth in Revolt which has just hit the Internets. Cera initially plays the same character many have grown tired of, until that character decides that he needs to manifest a separate identity. When that happens, he follows no rules, and only knows the path of the sexy villain — which could be a nice change for the actor if he can pull it off.

The film also stars Ray Liotta, Zach Galifianakis, Fred Willard, and Justin Long. Check out the trailer after the jump.

‘BioShock’ Film Gets a New Director

BioShock,_Big_Daddy_and_Little_SisterAs many fans of the videogame franchise know, news of a BioShock film has kept us all in suspense since word of it first surfaced nearly a year ago. Initially, Universal greenlit the pic and had Pirates of the Caribbean franchise director Gore Verbinski attached to the project. Sadly, Verbinski had to leave the film due to scheduling conflicts, but not before the film’s budget had ballooned to $160 Million — which may be another reason for his departure.

Now, word comes from Slash FIlm that Universal has found a replacement for Verbinski: writer/director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who’s last film was the decently successful 28 Weeks Later.  Set in an alternative history 1960, BioShock follows the story of a plane crash survivor named Jack, who must explore the underwater city of Rapture, and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it.

Jack is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will may not be as free as he thinks it is. With Fresnadillo stepping in to fill the rather big shoes of Gore Verbinski, you have to wonder if Universal is so hot on a BioShock film these days. He certainly doesn’t have the track record of Verbinski with big tent-pole films plus the budget and schedule are reportedly being cut. That’s not always an indicator of anything, especially the end product, but it doesn’t seem to bode well.

Box Office: Tarantino Finally Gets His Hit

large_tarantino-inglourious-basterdsThis weekend was a pretty big one for the box office, though only making just over $100 million with the top ten. This marked the biggest opening weekend for one of Hollywood’s most celebrated writer/directors in Quentin Tarantino, as his latest film Inglourious Basterds brought in an estimated $37 million in the domestic box office, while bringing in $27 million overseas.

This certainly goes down as the biggest opening weekend for Tarantino, with the runner ups being Kill BIll Volume 2 back in 2004 bringing in $25 million and 2003’s Kill BIll Volume 1 grossing $22 million in the opening weekend. While the former hit theaters over five years go, Tarantino’s 2007 film Grindhouse only brought in $11 million in the first weekend, and a total box office gross of $25 million.

Basterds not only marks Tarantino’s biggest opening weekend in the box office, but also the biggest production budget that he has worked with at $70 million. Grindhouse being his second biggest with $67 million, the film only grossed $25, which barely made a dent. Basterds, however, has already made an estimated $64 million, which means this film will be turning a profit in a matter of days.

Elsewhere in the box office, last week’s hit District 9 only had a 49% drop from $37 million to an estimated $19. G.I. Joe is still hanging on to the top three spot with $12.5 million, with The Time Traveler’s Wife and Julie and Julia following closely behind. Tarantino’s often-partner Robert Rodriguez’s film Shorts, did not–however–follow in his friend’s trend. The film opened with only $6.6 million.

Teaser for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’ Goes Live

christopher-nolan-director-1Those who went out to see Inglourious Basterds this weekend didn’t only get close to 3 hours of nat-zee killing action, but also the very first peak at writer/director Christopher Nolan’s newest film starring Leo DiCaprio.

Not much is known about the film, other than it is “a contemporary science fiction tale set in the architecture of the mind”, and that Leo will be playing Jacob Hastley, a CEO that becomes involved in a blackmailing scandal. This is the first writing and directorial efforts of Nolan’s since last year’s critically acclaimed Dark Knight.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins), Joseph Gordon Levitt (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Ellen Page (Juno), and Michael Caine. Inception is set to hit theaters July 16 of next year. You can check out the trailer after the jump.

‘World of Warcraft: Cataclysm’ Announced

World-of-WarCraft-CataclysmNight Elves, Orcs, and Gnomes all over the world rejoiced this weekend, as Blizzard officially announced the next World of Warcraft expansion at BlizzCon in Anaheim, CA. This next expansion, officially titled Cataclysm, will bring the rise of Deathwing, causing the destruction of all of Azeroth as we, the players, know it.

G4 brings us the official debut trailer (which you can check out after the jump), as well as the details on the expansion…

• Two New Playable Races: Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.

• Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 85 and earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.

• Classic Zones Remade: Quest to level 60 as you never have before. Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been reforged by the cataclysm and updated with new quests and content.

• Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms from a whole new perspective.

Review: Early ‘Avatar’ Footage

avatar_newposter_thumb-thumb-550x318-21770This past Friday was a pretty new and exciting day for the cinema, as most dubbed it “Avatar Day” because 20th Century Fox ran free screenings of select clips from James Cameron’s highly anticipated film in 3D IMAX theaters across the country. There were roughly six clips totaling about 15 minutes. Cameron made an appearance at the beginning of the clips (in 3D, of course) and introduced the scenes.

Not much was known about the film, let alone the premise, leading up to “Avatar Day,” so it was nice to get an idea of the story. From what was gathered, the film takes place in the 21st century, when mankind is at war with the alien race known as the Na’vi. They enlist people to fight on the warring planet, but before they are dropped off, they go through a process which places them in an alien body, or their “avatar”.

From there, the main character Jake Sully (played by Terminator: Salvation‘s Sam Worthington) embarks on a journey of this new and beautiful world, and discovers that he may be fighting for the wrong side. The story is pretty old-hat, which most people could remember as the main plot from 2003’s The Last Samurai.

First Look: ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’

Like we reported back at E3, Star Wars: The Old Republic is making its way to PCs in hopes of doing two things. The first is erase the sour taste that was left in the mouths of players from Star Wars: Galaxies, the first attempt of making a Star Wars MMORPG. In addition to getting rid of that sour taste by establishing a new Star Wars online experience, it looks to take the fight head on to the dark Sith lord that has dominated the online gaming world for the last four years, World of Warcraft.

No longer calling itself an RPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic considers itself a Massive Multiplayer Online game with action and roleplaying elements. Even with Blizzard’s response of a new expansion for WoW called Cataclysm, Star Wars: The Old Republic from Bioware may have the best shot of any upcoming MMO to unseat the Warcraft powerhouse.
