First Trailer of Patton Oswalt in ‘Big Fan’

big_fan_posterWhen you hear the name Patton Oswalt — the voice of the rat in Ratatouille — is the first word that comes to mind “compelling”? Well, that just might happen once you see the trailer and become aware of his new film Big Fan.

The film, written and directed by Robert Siegel, is about a mild-mannered parking garage attendant who’s life gets turned upside down after an altercation with his favorite player on the New York Giants. Oswalt plays the protagonist, who also happens to be a die hard fan of the team. The film looks to pull on a few of the same heartstrings that writer Siegel’s The Wrestler tugged on last year.

Those unaware of who Patton Oswalt is would recognize him from many outlets. He’s from TV’s King of Queens (which he also wrote for), made a recent appearance on Dollhouse, can be seen on Reno 911! quite a bit and is a founding member of The Comedians of Comedy alongside Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, and rising star Zach Galifianakis. Check out the first trailer for Big Fan, which opens in New York and Los Angeles in early September, after the jump.

Review: ‘Bruno’

bruno-1

Gay rights is a huge topic this year, and rightfully so. After Proposition 8 in California and other gay marriage laws being passed in states like New Hampshire and Connecticut, it’s on everyone’s minds. While not exactly a sequel to 2007’s Borat, but still familiar territory, Bruno has hit theaters at what seems to be the perfect time.

Bruno is a character from Sasha Baron Cohen’s HBO show, The Ali G Show. After getting kicked off of his hit Austrian fashion show, we follow Bruno’s quest to become “uber famous”: first as a Hollywood celebrity, then a hit interviewer, and finally as a humanitarian. While on this quest his “assistant’s assistant” Lutz is chasing after Bruno’s fleeting affections.

What this film suffers from, which didn’t seem to hinder Borat so much, is just how plot driven it is. The filmmakers certainly had a story to tell, but the interviews and celebrity candids tell the story enough—our country, despite how progressive or culturally advanced it may seem, has a serious homophobia problem. I didn’t need a plot to tell me that, though. Borat felt like a journey, and this felt like a narrative, which I didn’t go to the theater wanting or expecting.

‘Hangover 2’ Coming in 2011?

the_hangover_movie_poster_zack_galifianakisAfter The Hangover grossed over $200 million in the domestic box office, it looks like Warner Bros. is ready to give director Todd Philips and his cast another chance to make them some money. With Zach Galifianakis moving on to some other projects like HBO’s Bored to Death and a few other things, Variety reports that we may be seeing yet another “morning after” situation in as little as two years:

Galifianakis will play one of the two leads in “Due Date”, an Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland script that was revised by Adam Sztykiel. In the comedy about fatherhood, an expectant dad and his unlikely travel companion (Galifianakis) race cross-country in hopes of making it home for the birth of his first child.

Both “Due Date” and “The Hangover 2” will follow the same production track as “The Hangover.” The plan is for the “Due Date” shoot to begin Oct. 6, and the film will be released next year in the first weekend of June, just like “The Hangover.” The sequel will begin production in October 2010 and will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011.

Warner Bros. hired Phillips and Scot Armstrong to begin writing “The Hangover 2” right after early test scores left the studio optimistic that it had a winner (Daily Variety, April 5).

Since it’s June 5th release, The Hangover has grossed just over $222 million, making it Warner’s highest grossing R-rated comedy, putting it past Wedding Crashers and just underneath Beverly Hills Cop for the supreme title, but analysts expect the film to reach that status by summer’s end.

Ryan Reynolds is ‘Green Lantern’

ryan_reynoldsWell, the speculation appears to be over and the choice has been made: Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern. According to Variety, the actor will be getting the starring role in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell is directing the movie and the studio is still working out the film’s budget, although its expected to be quite large. Production is expected to begin in January on the film written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

According to the article, Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with The Hangover star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Well, there you have it. Now Ryan Reynolds is starring in two rival superhero franchises. Should be an interesting next couple years.

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. . . Again!

Fred_Ward_REMO_WILLIAMSWith all the sometimes disappointing and questionable remakes, reboots and do-overs coming out of Hollywood these days, sometimes its nice to get news of a reboot and actually be happy about it. What am I talking about? Well, according to The Risky Business Blog, The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and Transporter producer Steve Chasman are teaming up to bring Remo Williams (aka “The Destroyer”) back to the big screen.

According to the report, the producers have enlisted Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, who are currently writing the action film War of Gods, to take on the screenplay based on the first book in the massive Destroyer novel catalog — which was written by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir in the 70s and 80s. In case you’re not familiar with The Destroyer, it concerns New Jersey cop Remo Williams, who’s convicted of a crime he didn’t commit.

Williams is sentenced to the electric chair, but his death is faked so he can become The Destroyer, a vigilante who joins a top-secret group of assassins set up by the government to operate outside the law. With the help of Chiun, his Korean mentor and a deadly assassin himself, Williams goes on missions for the government and takes his revenge on the criminal underworld and those who framed him.

As a big fan of the books and the original movie starring Fred Ward as Remo Williams and Joel Grey as Chiun, I’m pretty happy that The Destroyer is getting another chance at the big screen. Its a great story and one that, if done well, can be very entertaining and action-packed. No word yet on who will take on the role of Remo Williams. However, with the two producers involved, might it potentially be either Christian Bale or Jason Statham? It could happen and if it does, we’ll bring you all the news.

New Clip from ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’

torchwood-children-of-earth

Even though its already started in the UK, the third season of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood is still something we have to wait for and look forward to here in the States. Sadly, even with the wait, we won’t get very many episodes this time around because of the BBC’s decision to only produce a five episode mini-series instead of a full season.

We’re not sure of the logic behind that decision, but at least we’ll still get a new adventure featuring some of our favorite Torchwood characters like Ianto, Gwen and the man himself, Captain jack Harkness. We’ve covered the show before and brought you the first trailer. And now, thanks to the BBC, we’ve got another longer clip to show you — which is about two minute and near the end, pretty creepy and cool.

In case you’re not familiar with the story arc of this season of Torchwood, it concerns all the children on Earth who suddenly stop moving as if paralyzed, and Torchwood discovers that, big surprise, an alien threat is behind this sinister plot. Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd), Rhys (Kai Owen) and even PC Andy (Tom Price) all return to help discover the truth and save the day.

Torchwood: Children of Earth is on the BBC in the UK now and comes to BBC America on July 20. Check out the new clip after the jump.

Review: ‘Moon’

moon_sam_rockwell

Once in a while, a movie comes along that is almost impossible to write about. Moon has been shrouded in mystery in both trailers and other marketing, and it becomes incredibly difficult to review the film without ruining the most important plot points and discoveries made throughout its 96 minutes. With that said, this film does a fantastic job of blurring the line between big budget sci-fi films and actor-driven “indie” films.

To keep things as ambiguous as possible in this review, Moon is about astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), assisted by his computer GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), at the end of his three-year stint on the Moon where he sends back to Earth a resource that accounts for 75% of the all energy. From there, things begin to go a bit haywire.
