SDCC 10: New Characters Announced for ‘Marvel vs. Capcom 3’

Marvel is obviously going to have a huge presence at this year’s Comic Con with their panels scheduled to talk about both the Thor and Captain America movies on Saturday in addition to their other big comic announcements. Marvel will also have the video game focus of the show with two gigantic releases of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions from Activision and the much anticipated sequel ten years in the making of Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds.

At the show, the public will be able to get a hands on preview with the latest build of the game featuring four newly released characters. Doctor Doom and the Super Skrull have been added to the Marvel roster while Capcom adds on the fan favorite Chun Li from the Street Fighter series and Trish from Devil May Cry. Of the four, both Doctor Doom and Chun Li are returning characters while the Super Skrull and Trish are brand new to the Capcom Vs. franchise.

UPDATE: We’ve got a brand new trailer to show off the new announced characters. Check it out after the jump!

It is interesting to see some of these choices to be added to the series. At E3, Dante from Devil May Cry was added to the roster and now Trish comes as another character from the same franchise. There are still many more Capcom titles that haven’t been touched such as Mega Man which have been well represented with multiple characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 but may possibly be losing their spots to some of the titles that have come out since.

Super Skrull is the most surprising of any of the announced Marvel characters. Deadpool was almost an expected addition at E3 due to the emphasis Marvel has been giving his plethora of titles and the staples like Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk and Wolverine were frankly givens. Super Skrull on the other hand is a somewhat obscure character that didn’t even play a large role in the recent Skrull Secret Invasion storyline.

More interesting is the fact that the Super Skrulls usual foes, the Fantastic Four are not at all represented in any of the past Marvel vs. Capcom titles. It may be an indication of four possible roster spots in the future but it also seems unlikely that they would put so much of a mid-tier comic franchise in to a game instead of more high profile characters like top Spider-Man villains or other members of the X-Men.
