SDCC10: Tom Welling Talks About Finally Becoming Superman On ‘Smallville’

While Marvel Studios may have dominated this year’s Comic-Con with it’s panels for Avengers, Thor, and Captain America, DC Entertainment managed to keep eyes of fanboys locked in as they announced Tom Welling will finally don the Superman suit in the upcoming final season of Smallville.

It’s been debated for quite some time whether or not it would ever happen, but it finally got confirmed that Welling will both fly and wear the suit made famous in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. What could this mean for a spinoff film? Does Welling have any interest in continuing as the Man of Steel after this season?

We got the chance to ask Tom all of these questions, and a few more, as he attended this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Check out our exclusive interview with the Smallville star after the jump, and keep it here for more interviews with the cast of the show.

Totally disapointed with the last episode of Smallville and with the fact that tom Welling has not been cast in the new Superman movie roll. The camera shots(or cgi) of Tom in the suite where a massive let down for me..to far away and right at the end of the programme…I dont think they did justice to the 10 yrs that fans have been waiting to see Tom become Superman….there are many things about the smallville show that i didnt like, but to have an ending like that and not give him the part in the movie…Shocking

i agree with all of you.i have been watching smallville since it’s pilot episode aired 10 years ago. i’ve been a superman fan for a long time. it actually started with smallville. i read the comic books to and i admit there are some differences and similarities between the comics and the show. but seeing tom in his first season as the young, and still developing man of steel made me realize that even though christopher reeve did a heck of a job as superman in superman 1,2,3, and 4 he has the potential to possibly do a superman movie following the smallville television show. tom would make a great addition to the long line of actors to don the superman suit but it would be very great if he continuesthe role of superman with erica durance as lois lane, justin hartley as green arrow and all of our other favorite characters likechloe sullivan and especially michael rosenbaum as lex luthor. i even wouldn’t mind seeing young justice in there. superman has superboy. green arrow has speedy.they didn’t show aqualad, kidflash, or robin but even just some characters from the comics would be nice. i’m asking as the show’s biggest fan not as a person. please all movie producers think about making a superman movie and casting tom welling as clark kent/superman, erica durance as lois lane and michael rosenbaum as lex luthor. thanks for listening to what i have to say because after smallville is over with i will say no more.

I Agree with everyone else. Tom Welling is the Man for the Superman Movie he has played the part for 10 years and I can’t see anyone else playing the part. I watched Superman Returns and It just didn’t seem or feel right with Brandon Playing the part. It would have been so much better with Tom. Yes I know he said that he would have had to stop playing the part on smallville to play that role but now that smallville is coming to and end the people have spoken and we want Tom Welling as Superman. The film will be great him as the lead role. I will spend my money on that film.

Tom Welling IS Superman. No other actor can play Superman like he can. I heard that they want to try and cast John Cena, or ” The Rock ” for the roll as Superman. That’s just wrong! Superman isn’t strong because he’s buff, he’s strong cause he gets his powers from the sun. If the film makers really do listen to the fans, then they should cast Tom Welling for the part. Tom is built like Superman is, looks, and talks like Superman. When people think of Superman, it’s either Chris or Tom. Even Chris said he’s the perfect person to play Superman, and gave Tom his blessing!!

I will not wast my money watching this movie if they cast anyone other than Tom Welling as Superman. He is the only one who could come close to mastering Superman apart from Christopher Reeves. I do not even like Brandon Roth as an actor period. I can not believe they would dare try cast him as Superman. I would not even waste space on my hard drive downloading a Brandon Roth Superman

Tom Welling would be an AMAZING Superman! He’s had enough practice for it! Ten years of experience! To me, it would be just plain WRONG not to let him be Superman in the movie! He has earned it! Oh, and don’t be too hard on Brandon Routh…He had some MASSIVE shoes to fill and he didn’t have the chance to play Clark Kent/The Blur for ten years prior to that movie! I think even Christopher Reeve would be in favor of Tom Welling! It just seems right. Personally, i don’t think i would be as excited to go out and watch this movie if Tom Wellling didn’t play Superman. Smallville made Superman more…serious? In the older movies Lex Luthor was more of a joke…as time goes on he becomes more of a challenge to Superman. Tom Welling has that “serious” feature as well. He knows how to portray the character very well! Maybe just as well as Christopher Reeve did.

SMALLVILLE IS ENDING SO IT’S THE RIGHT TIME FOR TOM WELLING HE NOW HAS THE TIME TO MAKE SUPERMAN MOVIES THEN HE DID BEFORE AND FACT THAT THEY NEED SOMEONE AND FACT THAT STAR TREK WENT FROM TV. TO MOVIES LIKE IN 1979 MOVIE DID THEN

The only reason I can think of that this should be up for discussion, is Tom’s availability. Clearly, he is the best choice. And not only because he is so perfect for the role, but also, lets not forget, EVERYONE loves him. That alone will fill the theater. The man is perfect!

Hi I have been a big superman fan since I was small and thought that no one could protray superman like Christopher Reeve could but till I have seen Smallville with Tom Welling . I also agree with Lourdes that he should get that chance to protray superman in a movie example a justice league movie or other superman movie that maybe leads up to a justice league movie simular to what they are doing for the Avengers. Seeing the other cast of Smallville in a superman or justice league movie would be awesome. A big Tom Welling fan Mario

Someone should really make a Superman movie with as much of this cast as possible, following the final season. I don’t understand why a producer wouldn’t pick this up. Allowing Tom to continue on in a Superman movie (and having the film start right where this season ends) would be awesome. It would make millions. Tom Welling has given Superman a background that everyone loves, he has made Clark ‘real’ for so many people, and fully deserves to not only be Superman in Smallville, but also to be Superman in a movie. I will be very disappointed if he never gets the opportunity to play Superman. It’s just not the same going to watch Superman [now] with older characters, after falling in love with Tom’s portrayal of Clark. I sincerely hope that a new superman movie following what happens after Smallville is made, and that Tom gets a chance to play Clark Kent on the Big Screen.

Tom Welling broke all records playing Superman on T.V. and holds the longest ever as Superman on the television and as well well on sci-fi . Ten years on T.V. and should have earned the right to play him on the screen (movies) so wake up Warner Brothers and C.W. smell the coffee!!! From Steven Dunetz.

I’m an old fogey too. George Reeves was my first Superman. I would rush home from school and get my homework done so I could watch it after dinner. I thought Brandon was trying too hard. To me it seemed like he was playing Chris Reeves playing Superman.
Tom has created his own version. And very meticulously I might add. I’d love to see at least one Smallville big budget ,big screen movie after the series.

Well, theres other things to be worried about than the suit. Exept I hope the red parts of the suit could look a little brighter, though. But again, Tom Welling would make an awesome Superman and unlike Routh, Tom Welling makes the character more believable.

Eu não sei como eles vão fazer isso, mas eu sei que é inevitável, é para onde nós temos que ir”, comentou o ator em entrevista ao The Flickast. […]

I'm so glad to finally see that Tom Welling gets to be Superman! My husband and I have been watching Smallville since the second season. I initially thought this was going to be another one of those wanna be shows trying to make money off someone else's idea. Boy was I wrong!!! My second son got the name Clark Kent Manning from watching the portrail of Tom Welling's Clark Kent. It was a total coincidence that his older brother's name is also Alexander. He got his name from Michael J. Fox's portrail of Alex P. Keaton on family ties. When Michael first announced his battle with Parkinson's. We make sure that we are home to watch Smallville when it's on. Tom Welling IS the second Superman. We all know that Christopher Reeve was going to be hard to replace as the Man Of Steel but, he even got to play on Smallville with Tom before his unfortunate and untimely death. He will be greatly missed. Brandon Routh may have sounded like Chris but, he didn't have the stature or presence of Superman. To me, he was almost trying too hard to play the part. I believe, in my heart, Tom WILL be able to fill the shoes that Chris has left behind for him. The new suit that Brandon wore in Superman Returns has got to go though! I don't care for it at all! It looks fake to me. More plastic than real. Please, I'm begging the producers and directors to put him in something closer to what Chris's suit was like. Keep the “S” flat with the suit not standing off like a pufffy logo attachment. As far as the show. I've waited 10 years to finially watch a good looking, tallented young man, step into the role of THE MAN OF STEEL. He has developed into a strappingly, gorgeous, muscular man and deserves the right to wear the suit. Now, they can start a show for Justice League. Cause ya' know, everyone's going to be watching that as well. The casting director sure has picked the PERFECT people for those roles!!! We still need Wonder Woman and Batman though. I would just love to one day get to meet Tom and maybe introduce him to his name sake. Just remember, I'll always be here, watching and waiting. 🙂 Chery Manning P.S. In case Tom reads this, I'm a producer for 1964 Motion Pictures in Wasilla, Alaska.

As someone who had Christopher Reeve as Superman, and then Lois & Clark, not to mention the reruns of Superman on t.v. as a child, I have literally seen them all and I really love Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent and now into Superman. He has made him into a real person, someone we can all relate to on many different levels. I could be wrong here, but I'm probably the oldest person commenting (I'm a mom and a grandmother). I love Tom and Erica's chemistry, and the stories have been smart, funny and emotionally real. I'm so excited that he may don the suit, I've been living for it since the series began. I'm not a big comic book fan, but I do love the super hero stories. So don't expect someone like me to know all the back stories on all the super villains and so on, but I have always loved this show and I'm so sorry to see it end. So if by some chance they do put him in as Superman, be it a Smallville movie, or as a continuation of Superman films, I'm going.

Yessssssssssssss! Take that, you haters!!! Now, all he needs to do is be in the rebooted Superman movie:)
Smallville was always a great show and I'm not just saying because I'm a fanboy, it's a fact.
I have been watching this show when I was high school, man and I have been waiting for this.

We need Tom Welling for the new Superman movie and he's got the experience, he's been familiar with the character for man years from the show. All these years, he's basically playing the superman character and he deserves to take the shot for the role on the big screen.
I admit, I was a bit concerned about his acting at first, let alone having the look for the character when he first got started on series. But over the years, us Smallville and Superman fans alike have watched him build his character and acting skill into this wonderful actor and personally, he has earned my respects. I don't care what some of these idiotic, ignorant fools say about him because everything every negative thing they say is nothing more but ignorant crap. I maybe a fanboy but at least I have common sense and know what I'm talking about. Tom Welling has given me and many fans around the world hope – the kind of hope that makes us “believe that a man can fly”…AGAIN on the big screen. And Tom Welling should be the man to get the job done. He has the best quality that I have seen since Christopher Reeve and it's not good enough to have a “good” Superman movie, what we need is an AWSOME Superman movie and it would do justice that Tom Welling
should take the part. He would make a great Superman of the today's generation and I don't see any reason why not. HE'S EARNED IT!

If you look closely at the rendered art above, you'll see that the art department for the show has decided to go with the suit from Singer's film. The same styled symbol, and overall look of the costume. This is quite different to anybody who knows the costume from 1938 or even from the earlier Richard Donner films.

  • Pat C.
    July 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm

    I don't understand Matt Raub's line
…the suit made famous in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.”

Hasn't that suit been famous since 1938? What is he talking about?
