One of the biggest television renewal upsets last spring was Fox choosing to bring back fledgling series Dollhouse while canceling Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Both shows were struggling for ratings but Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles seemed more likely to be picked up as it was concluding its second season compared to Dollhouse only having aired twelve episodes (the thirteenth episode, “Epitaph One”, is currently only available in the DVD box set for season one and via iTunes). Obviously, loyal Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fans were upset at this decision.
Those fans may have come to terms with the series never returning to television, but they haven’t given up hope for a direct-to-DVD movie. It seems unlikely but Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles producer James Middleton gave some indication that it could happen:
“The quick answer is, yes, there have been many discussions. I can’t go into more detail about the subject until I have something truly substantial to report. What the fans should know is that I hear them and I too would love to see T:SCC come back in some form.”
Sure, people may only be having “discussions” at this point but at least they’re talking. That’s a good first step for a show that desperately needs a conclusion. Without spoiling anything, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles pulled out all the stops for the season finale and left the series on a giant cliffhanger. Then it got canceled and we were all left wondering what would happen next. Some may find it easy to dismiss fan support as futile but there’s growing precedence for their voices being heard.
Seth McFarlane’s Family Guy was resurrected by Fox after fans made it one of the highest selling DVD sets of all time. Same goes for Futurama with a planned return to Comedy Central. Jericho fans brought that show back, if only for one more season, after an outpouring of support and Joss Whedon’s cancelled Firefly evolved into the Serenity movie. Incidentally, three of the four shows mentioned above are (or were) on Fox.
So, in truly bizarre fashion, Fox may be renowned for cancelling shows but it seems they also do listen to the fans and sometimes give them what they want. This being the case, perhaps a Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles DVD movie is not entirely out of the realm of possibility. The actors may have moved onto other projects (e.g. Brian Austin Green on Smallville, Summer Glau on Dollhouse) but it would be possible to get something done during their respective hiatus. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles needs closure, here’s hoping Fox decides to give fans that as well.

Once again a network in this case the CW has tried and failed with it’s FRIDAY switch of what seems to be turning out to be the best season of Smallville yet. Sorry but most Smallville viewers weren’t CW Friday night viewers and just because you put a major show on that night doesn’t mean it will change. All it means is that the Powers that Be will probably decide to scrap another good series because of idiotic programming.
Same is true with Fox and their Friday choice for Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles a show that in it’s 2nd season was really gaining it’s legs but once again viewers didn’t switch nights and it was cancelled leaving the Brothel/Spy entity known as Dollhouse in order to keep it’s creator happy.
Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles died a horrible death and I’m sorry I hate to see Smallville fall to the same fate because of the executives decisions to play multiple chairs with shows that got good ratings on their original nights.

@JamesM, I echo your excitement for the possibility of a DVD movie. You’re comment about making money is a good one. At the end of the day if WB sees a financial incentive in continuing TSCC via DVD release then they’ll probably do it. Hopefully the outcry of fan support will make them aware they have buyers and it will happen.

September 28, 2009 at 3:22 pmWoot! Bring back Sarah Connor!!! Warner Bros will be making money off the DVD sales, since they produced the series, so Warner Bros would bring back the show via direct-to-dvd. I believe Warner Premiere handles Direct-To-Dvd production.
