Get Your First ‘Official’ Look at Jason Momoa as ‘Conan’

Since I was first exposed to Conan in cinematic form by Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Milius in 1982’s Conan the Barbarian, that version has been by definitive on screen incarnation of Robert E. Howard’s character. Now, with the reboot of the franchise well underway and a new actor taking on the role, I may need to get used to a whole new version.

Previously, we brought you news of the new actor, Jason Momoa, and some other info from the film. Now, we’ve got another more “official” look at Momoa as Conan in this new photo from the Nu Boyana Film Studios site.

Although it’s just one pic he does look a lot like Conan, especially as envisioned by Frank Frazetta in many of his iconic paintings. Momoa seems to have the look of a true Cimmerian and I, for one, am going to give him a chance to supplant Arnold’s portrayal as my favorite.

The Lionsgate release of Conan, under the direction of Marcus Nispel, in addition to Moma features Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Bob Sapp, Leo Howard, Ron Perlman, Said Taghmaoui and Rose McGowan. Look for it to hit theaters sometime in 2011.

Check out a larger pic of Momoa as Conan after the break.

Jason Momoa was awesome in “Game of Thrones” when he played Khal Drogo (and pretty barbaric too) so I’m looking forward to this movie 🙂

This type of casting, to me, suggests they are not taking this movie as seriously as they should. Conan is one of the most epic heroes in modern mythology. This should be a blockbuster. This should be something like Lawrence of Arabia married to 300. Instead, it looks like they’re going for B movie Scorpion King bullshit status by hiring some Warf looking rip-off from a lame sci-fi series. They may as well have hired Brendan Fraser. Super disappointing. This could be the movie of a generation and they’re going to make it a joke.

Conan is mean, fierce, wild, uninhibited, rugged… a man. This dude is a boy.

Good start. He’ll do just fine as the young Cimmerian. Nispel was the right director for his adventures too.

I don’t think the size matters as much as the fierceness of who Conan was. I know no matter what they will never be a perfect Conan but Jason just doesn’t have that look he needs. I always thought the picture of Conan fighting the ape on the cover of the first book was perfect. I’m going to still see the movie but I hope Conan doesn’t become a huge fad just like Lord of the Rings was.

Exactly. Capture Conan’s spirit and the rest will fall into place.

Howard portrayed Conan as big and fast. Lithe but pantherish. Always thought that the books indicated that Conan got bigger as he got older. Check some of the artwork and descriptions of Conan in the stories of his early life. Personally thought Arnie was too big and slow (but wasn’t a real fan of the movies as they butchered the stories too much). This guy looks about the right size for the young conan to me.

Size is relative, but Howard portrayed Conan as big and fast. He had the bulk Arnold had, or he would not have been able to muscle his way out of the spots he did. Look at Frazetta’s cover art, that epitomized Conan for me when I read the books in the 70’s. He was ripped, massive, veiny with heavy sinews. This guy looks too smooth without the mass. I’ve also seen pictures where he looks like he is a “girlie” man with “pathetic spagehtti arms…” Lets hope he CAN act, as that may be all we get, I can see it now, the new Conan…Conan the MetroSexual. If you don’t think big is fast, check out Dwain Johnson working out. Too bad he made the Scorpion King and compromised his chances he would have been my first choice. BTW in the Hyborian World, Conan was a descenant of the survivors of Atlantis. If you place him in todays Europe he would have been a Teutonic-English hybrid. His enemys were the Aesir, the Scandinavians, the Vanir, the Norse-Danes, and the Celts (Scots). So the German accent never really figures in.

    • Lolanjon
      February 13, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Celts are the Irish my man. Picts were the Scots- dark haired meditteranean ancestry. Conan is Cimmerian- dark folk with Atlantean heritage. Conan is a warrior of Gigantic Mirth- but we got to get him started. This fella is a good starting point. Nispel is doing a good job making Momoa look viscious and uncompromising.

Arnold was given that role by being the most developed and best proportioned, Famous (Pumping Iron) bodybuilder of that time. Not because he looked like Conan or could act.
This guy looks a lot more like the character that Howard had envisioned. Big, dark and fast.
Too bad the fans have had the movie image embedded into their skulls. Read the books and study the Frazetta Images as I have. Steve Ferris

“Momoa seems to have the look of a true Cimmerian” Are you kidding me? Cimmerians were from the north, they lived in mountains. Sure Conan had dark skin but thats from long exposer to the sun not because he was Hawaiian. It would have been extraordinarily easy to find a better Conan why did they choose a model? Are they trying to get women to see the movie?

He’s not big enough to be Conan. Sigh. Will no one get the Conan thing right? They should really start by reading the original 12 books by Robert Howard. Arnold was great because he had a thick northern accent that Howard wrote of and was certainly huge. I hope like heck that the writers, directors and producers take the time (what like two weeks) to read he originals and finally capture what all us fans have love about the implacable rough and raucous hero of the Hyborean age. Call me guys, I am a real blacksmith (like Conan’s dad) and an expert on Conan!

If they can turn a shortarse like Michael Keeton into Batman, then surely they can use digital magic to make Jason Momoa look bigger than he actually is. Look at what they did in Lord Of The Rings with the different races. They could probably do something about his voice as well, though I doubt they would bother.

My only real objection is that he doesn’t look as barbaric or mean as he should. But then again, neither did Arnie.

      November 11, 2010 at 3:49 am

Jason Momoa is a lot taller than Arnie … a lot! I guess you’re talking about the huge muscle mass when you say he’s too small, right? I *have* read the REH cassic novels, and I think the size thing is all relative. Conan was described as huge … Jason Momoa is actually enormous — watch a few episodes of Stargate, and see. Also, he’s an actor, and might easily affect a northern accent, with a good dialog coach. I’ve a feeling it’s the comic art that makes us think of Conan as being a bit like a “shaved gorilla.” In reality, it’s endless hours in a gym, lifting weights, that makes a guy look like that. Conan’s lifestyle, as depicted in the first movie — all that running!! — wouldn’t build or maintain that body. He’d wind up looking a lot like you see right here in this pic. Food for thought!

Jason Momoa is “a lot” taller? Since when is 2″ “a lot”? Arnold is 6’2″, and Jason is 6’4″. Big whoop.

They’ll get him to the gigantic mirth- we just gotta get the young Cimmerian started. Camera angles can do alot too. Real Blacksmith- sweet. You forge asian blades as well as European based blades? I practice Taijutsu and hold a particular interest in asian based sword smithing.

He doesn’t look anything like Conan, neither Frazetta’s or Howard’s. He’s not near big enough, wrong hair style, too “pretty.” What a shame.

    • Lolanjon
      February 13, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Frazetta’s art often has Conan in the shadows- not clearly deliniated- so interpretation is allowed here I think. Howard’s vision is present here- get the comics outta ya mind and read the original stories. The early pulp covers portray Conan along this line and Howard was very pleased with the results. Conan like Tarzan is open to interpretation and should evolve. It’s time for an original approach to the Cimmerian. Arnold was the hulking monolith and Momoa will be the savage, uncompromising barbarian.
