Gamepro Magazine To Shut Its Doors

For many people who grew up in the video game era, Gamepro was one of the best sources for news, reviews and stories about the industry. Now that we are in the times of the Internet, print based content is becoming more and more rare. Sadly, one of the most well known and respected magazines in the industry is officially ending its run of over 20 years.

Gamepro is shutting down print and online operations, moving the Gamepro branding to PCWorld and becoming their gaming news source. Gamepro.com has this message on their site:

“Thank you for your loyalty, support, and participation in the GamePro.com community. At noon on December 5, 2011, the U.S. version of GamePro online will shut down as an independent site. GamePro will become part of PCWorld.com, offering gaming news, reviews, and how-tos from the PCWorld team. Thank you to the entire GamePro staff for their hard work and dedication.”

This is sad, but not unexpected news. Gamepro‘s years of relevancy are behind them, and they weren’t making enough of a stand online. Still, for a time Gamepro ruled, they were the kings of video game journalism in it’s most raw and exciting days.

Much like when Wizard stopped publishing its print magazine, this is the end of an era for kids that used to hang out at the magazine rack while their parents did the groceries.

Goodbye Gamepro, and thank you.

J.J. Abrams Gets Alice Eve & A Release Date for ‘Star Trek 2’

He may have his hands in half a dozen TV projects, and Zach Quinto may want to quit acting, but that isn’t stopping J.J. Abrams from continuing in his reimagined world of Star Trek with a second film.

First, Abrams announces that he wants She’s Out of My League starlet Alice Eve to have a juicy role in the upcoming sequel. This is the first hard confirmation of new casting news, seeing as the deal with Benicio del Toro has yet to solidify. From Variety.

As is common with Abrams, secrecy has surrounded the pic since the helmer officially announced he would be back — including which characters the new actors will play. Sources say Eve’s character is new to the “Star Trek” universe, unlike del Toro, would insiders believe will be playing someone familiar to Trekkies.

As if that isn’t juicy enough for all you diehards out there, an official date has also been announced, which will make it hard for actors like Quinto to continue to drag their heals.

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘Scarlet Spider’ #1

As spider-themed superheroes go people most likely think of Spider-Man first. Well, another spider is ready to grab your attention and fortunately for fans of the original web-slinger, this new character doesn’t stray too far from the original.

I’m talking about, of course, the Scarlet Spider. Haven’t heard of him? Well, here’s some info on him and a bit about the upcoming comic series he’s about to star in.

Kaine – the all-new Scarlet Spider – finds himself on the run in Texas after saving New York City from becoming the world’s largest spider nest during Spider-Island. But when his escape is stopped by a super-powered crime syndicate, Kaine must put an end to their corruption the only way he knows how…violently.

“Scarlet Spider is a book that can deal with a character much like Peter Parker but at darker, more difficult place in his life,” said Stephen Wacker, Marvel Senior Editor. “The violent choices he’s made through years of struggle—the sins of youth, so to speak—have come at a brutal cost. He may hope that the things he’s done will be left to the dusty, yellowed pages of history, but someone ALWAYS remembers who you used to be.”

Check out previews of the new series after the break. Scarlet Spider #1, written by Chris Yost with art by Ryan Stegman, hits comic shops everywhere in January.

Zachary Levi Set To Host The Spike TV VGAs

The Video Game Awards are an interesting thing. Like most basic cable award shows it often plays like a two- hour long advertisement for next year rather than a celebration of the current one. On the other hand, the Video Game industry does warrant a night to honor it’s very best, and the people who run the show clearly are interested putting forth the industry’s best foot in prime time.

This year’s show is going to have one huge advantage to keep the show credible and enjoyable. Zachary Levi, the geeky lead in Chuck and video game voice actor, has just been announced as the host for this year’s show.

“Zac Levi is an avid gamer who is truly a part of gaming culture and understands the fans,” says Casey Patterson, Executive Producer and Executive Vice President, Event Production, Talent & Studio Relations for Viacom Entertainment Group. “He has great ideas about this year’s show. Zac is all about honoring the year in gaming and ushering in the future by showcasing massive world premieres at this year’s event. We’re excited to be working with Zac.”

It is great for the show that it’s host is both a charming, likable guy and some one well versed in gaming culture. As the industry becomes more main stream it will need to rely on people who truly understand it’s culture and not just icons whom geeks decide to love.

The show will premiere live at 8:00 PM EST, Saturday December 10th on Spike TV, MTV 2 and SpikeTV.com
