Microsoft Surface Preorders Start Today

For the few of you who don’t already have an iPad (or even a Google Nexus Tablet), Microsoft will start taking preorders for its Surface tablet today. Said preorders will begin at 12:00PM Eastern, 9AM Pacific. Heck, that’s right now!

Although, don’t get your hopes up too much because Microsoft has said that quantities will be limited during the pre-sale period. Shocking that they said that, right?

The Surface, which is initially only available running Windows RT, will start at $499 for the base model, which includes 32GB of internal storage. 64GB will set you back $599. Other specs include the NVIDIA T30 processor, 2GB of RAM, front- and rear-facing 720p HD cameras, a full USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth 4.0 and microSDXC support.

The Surface also comes with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview with a free upgrade to the full version once it becomes available. Plus, you can get those cool soft-touch keyboards in a variety of colors for $119.99 each and the Type Cover is available for $129.99.

If you want one, head on over to www.surface.com and do it. The full press release is after the break.

New Trailer with Chloe Moritz as ‘Carrie’ Arrives

Even though we’ve already seen this story at least twice now (the original with Sissy Spacek being the best) Screen Gems and MGM have seen fit to grace us with a new big screen version of Stephen King’s Carrie. The remake sports a great cast in Julianne Moore and Chloe Moretz and from the new trailer just released today, it could potentially be a decent movie too.

Kimberly Peirce directed Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s script for the movie. Look for Carrie to arrive on March 15, 2013. The new trailer is below.

Check This Out: Syfy’s New Sci-Fi Drama ‘Defiance’

Even though they ended up changing their name, let us not forget that Syfy used to be called Sci-Fi and did, in fact, care about the genere we all know as, well, Sci-Fi. Returning to their roots, the channel has a new, upcoming drama called Defiance.

The show takes place in a future Earth ravaged by interstellar war and inhabited by surviving humans and aliens. To get your interested in it, we’ve got a clip/preview for the show below.

Defiance stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Fionnula Flanagan, Mia Kirshner and Graham Greene. Some people in that list you should recognize.

We think it looks pretty good. What say you America (and elsewhere)? Look for Defiance to premiere on Syfy in April of 2013.

NYCC12: Hands-On With ‘Halo 4’

Knowing full well that no matter what, when review season was going to come around Halo 4 would be on my list, I couldn’t bring myself to wait in the horde of players hoping to get a brief hands on in San Diego at Comic Con. With so much going on, it wasn’t worth missing an entire day’s worth of events just for ten minutes of multiplayer. But with preview night of NYCC being less crowded, the proposition of waiting less than an hour to get hands on with Halo 4’s multiplayer seemed much more reasonable.

In our game, we had the opportunity to play Team Slayer on Ragnarok. As the name would suggest, this map is the successor to Valhalla from Halo 3. Not much has changed about the physical layout of the map though. The same basic structures still exist as they did before but with higher res textures. The only major change to the level was the position of weapons, taking into effect weapons new to the game. We also had the mech walker in our level which when used properly was a beast on the battlefield. Unfortunately, everyone was rushing for it at most times so we didn’t get to spend too long with it.

Box Office Report: ‘Taken’ Holds Off ‘Argo’ To Make A Second Run At The Top Spot

Well kudos to Taken 2, it was speculated in this very spot last week that the poor word of mouth and reviews would put a big dip into the action sequel’s take this weekend. The wrongness is strong with this one.

The Liam Neeson punch-fest held off the critical darling Argo for the top spot yet again in the box office trenches. The film brought in an estimated $22.5 Million over the three-day weekend with a relatively healthy dip of only 54.6%. For an R-rated action film with a built-in audience who presumably all went and saw it the first weekend, that drop is pretty strong.

Argo came up in second, with a still very respectable $20 Million weekend. The Affleck directed ‘incredible true story’ did about as well as a movie of this nature can reasonably expect to do, and with the heaps and heaps of love and positive word of mouth this film is getting it should play well for a few more weeks.

NYCC12: Preview Night Photo Gallery!

Unfortunately due to prior commitments, I was only able to make my way down to the New York Comic Con this year for preview night. While it was great to be able to take to the floor and not be mowed down by waves and waves of people, part of what makes a Con great is being surrounded by your fellow geeks. But even though it wasn’t the storm of crazy that usually envelopes the show floor by Friday or Saturday, there was still tons to see at the Con.

In the gallery below, check out some of the great booths from the show as well as some early cosplayers. One thing that stood out this year at NYCC is just how much video games were represented. PlayStation came in with a booth the same size as their San Diego setup including a huge diorama for God of War: Ascension. Meanwhile, Nintendo had two areas set aside: one for the 3DS and one larger area featuring both Wii U and 3DS titles. Not to be outdone, Microsoft came in with their biggest gun, Halo 4 which boasted a 45 minute to hour wait time on the least crowded of the show days for one round of multiplayer.

Take a look at all NYCC had to offer after the jump and we will try our best to find some more photos from the show floor from the rest of the weekend if at all possible!

Movie Review: ‘Seven Psychopaths’

If it weren’t for the fact that writer/director Martin McDonagh is every bit as handsome as his favorite leading man, you’d think he was going down the Woody Allen vanity route, casting Colin Farrell as his obvious surrogate—a screenwriter named Marty M—in his second feature film, Seven Psychopaths. Fellow Irishman Farrell was also the star of McDonagh’s 2008 sleeper hit In Bruges, which also wove its story around a band of incompetent low-level criminals who accidentally get into the crosshairs of a big time criminal sociopath, played very winningly in that first film by a rewardingly cast-against-type Hugh Grant.

The tone of Psychopaths feels very much the same as Bruges in that Farrell again plays a likable fuck-up (this time an alcoholic screenwriter who is finding it hard to produce a follow-up to his first success) whose loser friend Billy (Sam Rockwell, playing very much TO type here) makes his living through a sloppy dog kidnapping operation that he runs with his mysterious elderly pal Hans (Christopher Walken). Unfortunately, Billy nabs a cute little Shih Tzu who happens to be the darling of his owner, mafia overlord Charlie Costello (Woody Harrelson), and thus begins the chase. A shaggy dog story, indeed.

A New ‘Gangster Squad’ Trailer with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Arrives for Your Viewing Pleasure

Even though the movie opens in January, traditionally a time when studios dump the movies they’re less enthusiastic about, we’ve still got a bit of hope for Gangster Squad. But then there’s that rather lame title too. Maybe if it was called Gangnam Squad instead, then they might have something.

Anyway, we know, the studio changed the release date for other reasons, not because the movie sucks. Still, you always have to wonder . . . if only a little bit. Good thing the new trailer looks pretty good, otherwise it would probably be curtains for Gangster Squad — at least in our eyes.

Look for Gangster Squad, with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn, to arrive January 11. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
