The Flickcast – Page 189 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

Movie Review: ‘Pitch Perfect’

Once a little-known subculture of the collegiate world, with rites and names as arcane as any secret society (Whiffenpoofs, anyone?), a capella is enjoying a bright moment in the spotlight, thanks in large part to the popularity of Glee and reality TV competitions like The Sing-Off. And now in Pitch Perfect, it has made it to the romantic comedy big time, starring Anna Kendrick, best known for her Oscar-nominated portrayal of the uptight young executive opposite George Clooney in Up In The Air. Here she’s still sulky, playing Becca, a mildly goth college freshman who yearns to leave college and pursue a career in music production.

Based on a nonfiction book by GQ editor Mickey Rapkin about the competitive collegiate a capella scene, the messy screenplay by Kay Cannon (Emmy-nominated 30 Rock writer/producer) suffers flat notes, sour chords and predictable harmonies, but thanks to a tight cast and fresh, energetic performances, delivers an enjoyable concert experience just the same.

Movie Review: ‘Looper’

If you’re a fan of sci-fi stories set in a dystopian, Dickensian future of rampant immorality and violence, or have simply been wondering why M. Night Shamalayan doesn’t meld Twelve Monkeys with Rambo and bring back Bruce Willis to help him do it, you’re in luck. Looper stars an intense Joseph Gordon-Levitt, nearly unrecognizable in prosthetics, contacts and distractingly heavy makeup that renders his face nearly 2D, as young Joe, a 25-year-old looper in the year 2042, and Willis himself as Joe 30 years into the future, in the year 2072.

If it weren’t futile, I’d try to give a summary of Looper‘s extremely intricate, convoluted and possibly hole-ridden plot. Suffice it to say that it involves fate, paid killers, Chinese mafia, secret bunkers, telekinesis, good-hearted prostitutes and the toddler tantrums to end all toddler tantrums. And that after the screening I attended, critics stood around in heated discussion for quite a while, trying to work it all out.

CEO Tim Cook Apologizes for Apple’s Maps in iOS 6

In what most will consider a bold, decisive move (and a few will think of as a simple attempt to save face), Apple CEO Tim Cook sent out a letter of apology today to all users of Apple’s new Maps application. In the letter, Cook admitted that Apple “fell short” on its commitment to customers.

In addition, he recommended that while the company works to fix its maps, users should check out other options for iOS including MapQuest and Microsoft’s Bing app. No mention of Google Maps, however. Shocking, I know.

The full letter is after the break.

Epic Dragon Con 2012 Music Video

While we didn’t get a chance to make it to Dragon Con this year, we did hear the stories. We heard about some pretty epic cosplay and even saw tons of pics, but nothing would have prepared us for this. Shot by the team of Micah Moore, Black Faucette, Justin Reich and edited together by Micah, this is the definitive Dragon Con video.

For those who have never been to Dragon Con, it is a multigenre meeting of the geeks that draws over 50,000 in attendance to Atlanta, GA each year. Every year, Dragon Con earns a reputation for some of the top cosplay in the nation, even sometimes surpassing that of San Diego Comic Con in high quality costumes. In its 26th year, Dragon Con keeps getting bigger and bigger.

In the video after the jump, Micah and the rest of his team from BeatDownBoogie.com use a remix of “Real Hero” from the film Drive to show off the unparalleled level of dedication and fandom of the attendees for this year’s Dragon Con. It’s videos like this that make us proud to be geeks.

New ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ Trailer Arrives

Presented without much comment is the latest trailer for Paranormal Activity 4. You have to hand it to Paramount, they are certainly getting their monies worth out of this franchise.

Enjoy the trailer. Look for the movie to arrive in theaters on October 19th.

Financial Planning: Budgeting a Geek Lifestyle

You know, it’s surprising. With all the “negative” connotation that comes from the mainstream media about living the geek life, their mass marketing machines sure cater to us. Think about it. Movies. Games. New high end tech. It isn’t the average Joe Sixpack who is the first to consume these. It’s us. The first iPhone users. The first HD TVs. The latest gaming rigs. All geeks. But because we are usually the first to adopt these new products on top of keeping up with our current regular purchases, we need to budget correctly or you won’t even be able to afford a place to live in to store all this cool new stuff.

The first and most important thing is to always prioritize. And no, that doesn’t mean deciding if it is a bigger priority to get the PlayStation 4 or XBox 720 when they come out next year. This comes to setting aside your basic necessities for living. Whatever amount of money you are making, set aside your money for housing, food, clothing, transportation and medical care. Once you have that safely set aside, the rest is your disposable income and that’s what you get to have fun with. Never sacrifice the necessities just so you can play.

Take a Look at the First Trailer for Park Chan-Wook’s ‘Stoker’

If director Park Chan-Wook never did another movie besides Oldboy, he would still be regarded as a masterful filmmaker. Oldboy is just that good.

Fortunately, he isn’t resting on the laurels of that excellent movie. He’s doing more. In fact, he’s about to make his English language debut.

For this, a film called Stoker, he’s got Mia Wasikowska, Dermot Mulroney and Nicole Kidman to work with. The story, as we know it so far, is as follows:

After India’s father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Sounds cool. Let’s just hope nothing happens to anyone’s tounge in this one. We’re not sure we could go through that again.

Check out the trailer for Stoker after the break.
