Gamescom 2012: ‘Deadpool’ Screen Shots and Fact Sheet from the ‘Pool Himself

At Comic-Con in San Diego, we got the news that Deadpool would finally be getting his own game. After making cameos and having supporting roles in titles like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 or Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the cult favorite is on the verge of mainstream success (if the movie ever gets made). Now, Deadpool is getting the opportunity to further break his way into the average American household.

High Moon Studios, most recently gaining recognition working on the Transformers franchise, have shown an understanding for licensed properties both in visual style and in capturing the voice of a character. While Deadpool’s visuals may be pretty standard comics action, his voice is anything but. Having to work with a character that has a voice separate from an inner dialogue that he communicates with all while breaking the 4th wall is no short challenge. Only some of the best comics writers have been able to nail this but hearing that Daniel Way is going to be working with High Moon on the game gives us tons of faith.

Now normally, we’d never just copy and paste a fact sheet but when the PR company makes this much effort to make it entertaining, it’d be a shame not to share it with the Flickcast audience.

Check out the screens just released from Gamescom and the full fact sheet after the break. Keep tuned to The Flickcast for more on Deadpool and his upcoming release from Activision and High Moon Studios.

John Barrowman Joining CW’s ‘Arrow’

Even though our reaction to the CW’s upcoming Arrow has been a bit mixed (we’re reserving judgement), we’ve now got at least one new reason to check out the show. According to ET, Torchwood star John Barrowman has joined the cast of Arrow in a recurring role.

The character is somewhat of a mystery at the moment, with Producers only saying Barrowman will play a “well-dressed man” who is “as mysterious as he is wealthy … he is an acquaintance of the Queen family and a prominent figure in Starling City.” Huh, that fits a few people in the world of Green Arrow. Or, it could be a completely new character.

Anyway, as you may know, the upcoming show centers around Oliver Queen, a wealthy young bad boy who, after spending five years shipwrecked on an island, returns to Starling City with a mastery of the bow and a determination to make a difference.

Arrow stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance.

Arrow premieres Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8PM on the CW.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet Coming to US On August 16th

Even as Samsung and Apple slug it out in court over who copied who, both companies are moving forward with new hardware. Apple has, of course, the upcoming iPhone 5 and rumored iPad Mini and Samsung has today announced (again), at a press conference in New York, a new 10.1″ Android-powered tablet known as the Galaxy Note 10.1.

If you’re keeping score at home, this is technically the third this device has been introduced, having first been reveleaed, with a slightly different form factor and inferior specs, during Mobile World Congress last February

The new tablet will feature a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch WXGA LCD display, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a front-facing 1.9 megapixel camera, Samsung’s S Pen stylus system and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Not bad. If only it had 1080P. Oh well. It will release on August 16th in the U.S. and cost you $499 for the 16GB model and $549 for the 32GB.

It will be interesting to see how this stacks up against the iPad and the rumored iPad Mini. Our guess is most people will probably stck with the iPad and Apple, but that this may present a viable alternative for some. However, it’s not going to knock the iPad off of the top spot. Not sure anything can do that at this point.

Gamescom 2012: ‘LEGO Lord of the Rings’ New Trailer

If you are on The Flickcast, you already know the story. A band of mismatched heroes takes an impossible journey to escort the smallest of men to the most dangerous of locales all to destroy a ring that could destroy them all. How do you improve on that ageless tale? Why, add LEGOs of course.

At Gamescom, WB Games revealed the latest trailer for LEGO The Lord of the Rings. Following in the tradition of LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Indiana Jones, LEGO The Lord of the Rings will follow the events of the movies while adding in the quirky LEGO humor. In the tradition of LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, the game will also feature voice acting.

New to the LEGO brand though is having actual sound bites from the movie used in the game. While it hasn’t be revealed whether or not any new audio has been recorded for the game, it will be interesting to see how much Traveler’s Tales has fun with some of the most iconic scenes while using the current audio that so many of us have memorized at this point. The trailer below already gives a hint both at some of the epic scenes brought to life using LEGO as well as some of the lighthearted fun that the developers have had playing with some of the films’ memorable scenes.

Check out the full trailer after the break and keep it here for more on LEGO The Lord of the Rings set to come out this fall for Wii, Nintendo 3DS, PC, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.

First Trailer for Cinemax and BBC’s ‘Hunted’ Arrives

We love spies and spy shows. We especially love spies and spy shows that feature kick-ass lead characters played by actresses we really like (who also happen to be hot).

The upcoming BBC spy show Hunted has all of those elements, and more. Written and directed by Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files), Hunted is an eight part series starring Melissa George as Sam Hunter, a skilled operative for a private intelligence firm.

According to the BBC, the character of Sam is “a complex and mysterious Bourne style female spy.” Sounds good to us.

We’ve got the first trailer for the show, which will air on both the BBC and Cinemax here in the U.S., and it’s chock full of spy action and everything else you would hope to see. We like it. Let us know what you think.

Hunted is set to premiere on BBC One and Cinemax this fall.

Catwoman is Coming to ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’

For those fighting and comic gamers that have been living under a rock since SDCC, the makers of Mortal Kombat are bringing the DC Universe back to the realm of fighters with Injustice: Gods Among Us. While its odd still that there is no DC branding in the title, Injustice places some of the most popular members of the DC roster against each other in a T rated fighting arena. Creative director Ed Boon promises to push that T rating as far as he can given the limitations put in place by DC and WB Games.

New to the cast along DC favorites like Batman, Superman and Harley Quinn is Catwoman. Between her longtime popularity amongst comic readers and the most recent role she placed in the Dark Knight Rises, it is almost a no brainer to put her in the game. Catwoman’s signature whip and claws are her main offense while she moves across the arena nimbly like an Olympic gymnast. Take a look at the full reveal trailer below to see Selena Kyle in action.

Story details are still pretty up in the air for Injustice. There is going to need to be some strong outside force influencing heroes to face off against each other, similar to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. They are also going to have to address the varied power levels of characters too. How is Superman going to get taken down by Batman just repeatedly punching him in the face? How is Solomon Grundy going to be able to even connect with a punch on the Flash? All of this will likely be addressed in the story to hopefully explain the gameplay balancing taking place.

New ‘End of Watch’ Redband Trailer with Jake Gyllenhaal Arrives

The somewhat annoying “shakey cam” used throughout the Open Road Films release End of Watch can’t completely kill our interest in this R-rated thriller. Writer-director David Ayer brings us a tale of two L.A. cops, played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena, as they go about their day.

Like it or not, he does it from the perspective of various hand-held, dashboard and security cameras. Not sure we’re in love with that. Oh well.

There’s redband trailer for the movie out today and ww’ve got it for you after the break because, well, it’s a redband trailer. The movie also stars Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, Cody Horn and America Ferrera.

It opens on September 21st.

New Bookstore In New York Is On a Mission to Save Classic Sci-Fi Books

You may be wondering why we would publish a story about a bookstore opening in New York. Well, that’s a fair question. The reasons are varied, but the most important ones are that this bookstore is selling Sci-Fi books exclusively, which we love, and, more importantly, is trying to save older, out of print books from disappearing forever.

We think that’s worth a mention.

According to an excellent article over at The Verge, the bookstore in question, located in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood and called Singularity & Co., opened its doors recently with the intention of bringing new and classic sci-fi novels to anyone who wants to read them.

What started as a Kickstarter campaign to find forgotten, out of print sci-fi books, digitize them, and sell them as e-books has grown into a full brick and mortar store. They still offer the eBooks, which you can subscribe to here, but now seek out rare and classic sci-fi books still in print to sell at the store.

In addition, founder Ash Kalb is also hoping to reprint some of the older, out of print books and pay actual royalties to the original writers. He’s working on the details right now and negotiating with publishers to get this going. We think that’s pretty cool too.

So, if you love Sci-Fi and love books, you should be clicking on the link and supporting this good cause. For more, check out the Singulairy & Co. video after the break.
