Hulu Plus Comes to Apple TV

Until today, if you used Apple’s Apple TV device, you were pretty much limited to programming via iTunes or Netflix. One other service that was conspicuously absent was Hulu Plus.

No longer. AS of today, according to a mention over at Hulu’s blog, the Hulu Plus service is now available to users using the new Apple TV. It also features detailed instructions on how to enable the service on the device including a way to set up the charge for the service using your iTunes account.

Hulu Plus streams a variety of TV shows including current and old series from ABC, NBC, FOX, The CW and Univision. It’s not as great for movies but the selection has been improving over the last few months. Perhaps it’s time to give it a try again?

Bond Is Back In a New Trailer for ‘Skyfall’

Even though some people found the last James Bond movie, Quantum of Solice, less than spectacular, we’re still glad Bond is back and coming to a theater near us in the new film Skyfall. We’ve already brought you info about the new movie and now there’s a new trailer.

For those of you unfamiliar with Skyfall, here the synopsis:

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Not only does the film look stunning and full of exciting action and drama, but Skyfall also boasts one of the best casts ever for a Bond film. Aside from series regulars Craig and Dame Judi Dench as M, the film also features Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finny and Javier Bardem.

Check out the new trailer after the break. Look for Skyfall to arrive on November 9.

Game Review: ‘Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD’ for XBLA

Younger players may not understand why there is so much love for the Tony Hawk series. Their most recent memories involve a “skateboard” that was “filled with technology” that didn’t actually work right with Tony Hawk: Shred. But at the turn of the millennium, Tony Hawk Pro Skater was one of the hottest games on any platform.

It was the height of the extreme sports phenomenon and Tony Hawk Pro Skater and its early sequels helped make Tony Hawk a household name, something completely unheard of for an athlete who wasn’t playing one of the big four sports. Now, almost thirteen years later, the team at Robomodo wants to give players the chance again to relive their favorite moments from Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 for the first time in Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD.

Gameplay

The first thing old school players of Tony Hawk Pro Skater will notice is that the HD remix holds up and ages well. It is still just as fun as it was years ago to hop on a rail, do a kickflip into a manual and then grab some big air with a 720 Superman off a vert ramp. What they will also notice though is the XBox 360 controller’s sensitivity makes it a little difficult at first to get used to the game’s multiple instances where they must balance. Whether it’s a grind, manual or lip trick, the analogs on the 360 are almost too responsive and once a player gets a little bit off the rails, they are going to need to bail or take a nasty fall.

New Trailer for ‘Taken 2’ Arrives

Let’s just stipulate for the record that Liam Neeson is a badass. This is even more impressive given the fact that Neeson is 60 years old, and age when most people are starting to take it easy.

Neeson apparently didn’t get that memo because he’s back with yet another action extravaganza. This time around it’s the sequel to his previous hit Taken. The film in question is, of course, Taken 2.

There’s a new trailer for Taken 2 out now and we’ve got it for you after the break. In the new film the bad guys turn the tables and come after Neeson’s character’s family, again played by Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.

Olivier Megaton takes over directing duties from original helmer Pierre Morel. Fox releases the sequel October 5.

It’s Official, ‘The Hobbit’ Is A Trilogy

Wow, leading up to comic-con this concept was inconceivable. Take the already stretched tale of The Hobbit and transform it into a trilogy, to paraphrase Bilbo, it seemed like an idea that make the story feel like butter spread over too much bread.

Then the avalanche started to roll when Jackson himself alluded to the potential of a third film. We talked about the potential expanding of the story in the wake of the first rumors. Now, thanks to a posting on Jackson’s Facebook fan page, we have confirmation:

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.  It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, “a tale that grew in the telling.”

Go visit Jackson’s page for the whole note to the fans, it goes a little deeper into the why of this decision.

So there you have it, The Hobbit is officially a trilogy. This is an interesting turn of events for one of the most anticipated films of this and next year.

We need some processing time to decide of this is wonderful or treacherous news. Stay glued to The Flickcast for a more in-depth reaction and any new news regarding the new, third, Hobbit film.

‘Hannibal’ Adds Another Accomplished Actor To Its Already Impressive Cast

The upcoming Hannibal TV series, created by the fantastic Bryan Fuller, is shaping up to be quite the event. So much so that the director of the pilot, David Slade, and series Hannibal, Mads Mikkelsen both left high-profile comic book movies for this show.

Now the show has snagged a seasoned acting veteran for an important recurring role, as learned by The Hollywood Reporter:

Laurence Fishburne is on Hannibal Lecter’s case. NBC’s upcoming Hannibal take has added the former CSI: Crime Scene Investigation actor to play Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI’s behavioral sciences unit… Fishburne will recur in the role played by Dennis Farina (Manhunter), Scott Glenn (The Silence of the Lambs) and Harvey Keitel (Red Dragon) in the feature film takes based on the Thomas Harris novels.

Fishburne is a great addition to an already well put together cast. This is one of those projects that seemed suspect on paper, but now that it is actually all coming together it has piqued our interest.

Hannibal follows a prequel story line from the Harris novels and films, but leads into Red Dragon should the series last into its third season. Knowing a defined arc with a predetermined destination is one of those touches that proves to us why we have faith in Fuller as a show creator.

The series has a 13 episode mid-season order on NBC, keep tuned to The Flickcast for any new updates about this intriguing new series.

Box Office Report: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Stands Supreme

You may have noticed that there was not a Box Office Report last week. Due to the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado the major studios made a choice to not announce any returns during the weekend, in tribute to the victims. A classy gesture that we at The Flickcast were all to willing to follow.

In any event there was a rather large Box Office event that happened last weekend, so it bears some discussion this week. The Dark Knight Rises debuted to fantastic numbers that fell short of the lofty expectations of we the prognosticators. Still, it managed to break a couple of records and come out the end of a difficult weekend with $160+ Million dollars in the bank.

Naturally people will compare this opening with that of The Avengers and The Dark Knight, and while it is in the same ball park of those two phenomenons, it failed to capture the cultural zeitgeist that propelled them to the next level.

Take this weekend’s returns as an example. The Dark Knight Rises took in another strong $64+ Million to stand number one for a second weekend, however it dropped over 60% in business from its debut frame. A number that is actually solid for a front loaded comic-book film, but is a deeper percentage dip than The Avengers or The Dark Knight ever took at any point in their respective runs.
