Google Announces 1GB Google Fiber Internet, TV and More

Today is a great day for those of you seeking an extremely high speed alternative to the traditional cable TV and Internet providers, but only if you live in Kansas City. That’s right, Google has announced its Google Fiber service which provides data speeds of 1GB up/down. This is over 100 times faster than the average broadband connection speed in the U.S.

According to the company, Google Fiber is the “journey to bring ultra-high speed Internet to Kansas City.” In addition to Internet service, Google also introduced a line of hardware specifically designed for the service including a network box, storage box, and a TV box. Of course, for the moment, you still have to live in Kansas City.

As for what you get and how much it cost, the company announced three packages:

Gigabit + TV: $120/month – Sign up for a 2 year contract which then waives the $300 construction fee. Package includes 1GB up and down connectivity, full TV channel lineup (HD), no data caps, a Nexus 7 tablet to act as a remote, TV Box, Network Box, Storage Box, and 1TB of Google Driver storage space.

Gigabit + Internet: $70/month – With 1 year contract agreement, the $300 construction fee is waived. Included in the package is 1GB up and down connectivity, the Network Box, and 1TB of Google Drive storage space.

New ‘Nerdist Channel’ Lineup Includes ‘Doctor Who’, NPH, Bill Nye, and More

Neil Patrick Harris, Bill Nye, Stephen Hawking, and the cast of Doctor Who may seem like a strange combination but The Nerdist Channel is making it work. In a preview for their programming, Nerdist Industries has managed to find a wonderful geeky balance between fun, science, and hilarious ridiculousness (see learning to tie a bow tie with Bill Nye, the Science Guy). The latter especially refers to Harris’ series “Neil’s Puppet Dreams,” which sounds and looks just crazy enough to be awesome.

Plus, I think NPH has proven that there’s really nothing he can’t do. Then for all you science lovers there’s “Stephen Hawking: The Nature of Black Holes,” where the theoretical physicist leads you through the universe. But depending on whether or not you’re a Whovian (like Hardwick) the best part of the preview is the news that the cast of Doctor Who will be featured on an episode of “Chris Hardwick’s All Star Bowling.”

Team Nerdist faces of with Team Who for charity in a match that is sure to be out of this world. Because after all, bowling is cool. Also on the Nerdist’s upcoming lineup are: “The Awkward Family Show,” “Cops: Skyrim,” “Gif Gif City,” “Just Cos,”  “Nerdterns,” “Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson,” and much more, including new episodes of current shows like “Face to Face with Weird Al Yankovic” and “Four Points with Alex Albrecht.”

‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’ Multiplayer Trailer and Screen Shots Revealed

At Comic Con, The Flickcast got to get hands-on with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’s multiplayer. Sadly we didn’t have the opportunity to bring you video from the event and show you what the latest version of Transformers multiplayer was bringing to the table. Someone at High Moon Studios must have seen our enthusiasm for the game because the new multiplayer trailer has been made available to the public for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

In the last Transformers: War for Cybertron, players were able to customize their character for multiplayer. Now, they are given tons more options to help give their own personality to one of four player classes including the Medic or the Titan. Everything from weapon choices to color schemes to tons of different armor pieces or heads to give a wider variety of bots on screen at once.

At launch, there will be 10 multiplayer maps (including one seen in the trailer after the jump which features a destroyed Metroplex-sized bot).

Players will also be able to receive a G1 Retro pack with a preorder from Gamestop.

‘Gangster Squad’ To Re-Shoot Key Scenes And Shift Release To January

One of the many considerations to be made in the wake of a horrible tragedy is how do certain studios remain respectful to the situation without knee jerk reacting to heightened public outrage. It is a fine line that Warner Bros. now has to walk in the aftermath of the Aurora Colorado shootings.

Gangster Squad is a film that was supposed to have a trailer play in front of The Dark Knight Rises. However, due to a specific scene in the trailer of gangsters shooting up a movie theater it was rightfully pulled. Now Warner Bros is taking things one step further and are scrambling to re-shoot the scenes involving the theater shooting altogether.

This of course will push the release of the film to a potential January slot as learned by The Hollywood Reporter:

One date the studio is looking at is Jan. 11. Before making a final decision, though, the studio is currently looking at several factors, according to sources, such as how quickly the cast can be reassembled for the reshoot, concerns about cast availibility to do press in January and the competition on the calendar.

Here is the fine line for Warner Bros, moving the release date is respectful, re-shooting a climactic scene that parallels the tragedy might be going to far. It is hard to say sight unseen, but hopefully the integrity of what seems like a good movie remains intact.

Stay tuned to The Flickcast as news on Gangster Squad solidifies we will keep you informed.

New World of Warcraft Expansion Officially Releasing This September

Blizzard is historically slow with their releases and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria has been in extensive beta testing for months now. So the wait has been excruciating for WoW fans the world over, with the release being so close but also potentially so far. Many fans have been waiting for this day.

That is because on this day Blizzard officially announced that the fourth World of Warcraft expansion will be released September 25th. It might seem odd to some that a simple release date would be such an important bit of news, but when it comes to Blizzard games, it is a big deal.

You see Blizzard has a tendency to move like a glacier in regards to their new releases and expansions. It took over a decade to get sequels to Starcraft and Diablo, and both of those titles languished in a mostly completed form for a long time leading up to their eventual releases.

So there was never a guarantee that because Pandaria was in extensive Beta testing that the game was nearing imminent release. Especially in light of rumors that stated Blizzard would only release one more title after Diablo 3 in 2012, and there is another near complete Starcraft expansion also needing an eventual release.

But it looks as if that Starcraft expansion will just have to wait for 2013, and all the WoW faithful can recreate their favorite Kung Fu Panda moments this fall.

Treat Yourself To The Stunning First Trailer For Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’

Ang Lee has never really been known for visual flair. His films are always beautiful, but his best works always seemed to have a quite beauty to them. The major exception of course being Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it seemed for a while that we might not get another visual stunner from the master filmmaker.

Thankfully that is not the case, it looks as if he knocked another feast for the eyes out of the park, and knowing the story of Life of Pi it will know doubt be a feast for the soul as well. For those in the dark on this film, here is its synopsis:

Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship’s only other survivor — a fearsome Bengal tiger.

It is really starting to feel like 2012 is going to end up as one of those great cinematic years, and if this trailer is any indication Life of Pi might be one of those marquee titles that headline a long list of quality films.

Check out the gorgeous trailer after the jump.

Is Peter Jackson Really Consider Stretching ‘The Hobbit’ To Three Films?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the greater trilogies in film history. Famously there is a story about Jackson originally pitching the adaptation as two movies. The eventual producer of the films heard the pitch and asked if there were three books why not make three films.

Well that was one of the first sparks that lead to Middle Earth arriving on cinema screens in epic and beautiful detail. Now it seems like that original logic is being turned on its head as The Hollywood Reporter thinks rumor of a third Hobbit film is quite firm:

Warner Bros., Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens began exploring the logistics of what it would take to make another movie. Those talks are said to have accelerated in recent days, with the studio on board if the right financial arrangements can be achieved. That includes securing new actor deals for the expansive cast as well as shoring up certain rights associated with the property.

Of course certain novels benefit from being told over nine hours instead of three or even six, but not necessarily The Hobbit. Tolkien’s first middle earth book is smaller and simpler in size and scope from each part of the Lord of the Rings series, so some serious padding needs to take place.

Stay glued to The Flickcast, as any ultimate decision that comes down about this will have to happen pretty soon.
