The 2012 Primetime Emmy Nominations Are In…

In the wee hours of the morning (on the west coast anyway), the nominations for the 2012 Primetime Emmy’s were announced. As usual the list included some happy surprises, some ludicrous choices and even a few head scratchers.

The Flickcast favorites Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad both got some solid recognition in the Drama categories, while some of our Comedy favs, Community and Parks & Recreation, got snubbed for the most part.

Not listed in the main nominations list, because it is oddly not apart of the main Emmy broadcast, was the Outstanding Animated Series category. Both Bob’s Burgers and American Dad shockingly were recognized for their awesomeness, but the incumbent Futurama should be the odds on favorite to win. Oddly South Park, who lately have dominated this category, is absent.

Speaking of incumbent winners who extra-deserve the award again this year, Peter Dinklage thankfully was recognized for the second year in a row. In season one he was a bad ass, in season two he was downright epic. If there is any justice he becomes a two-time winner in September.

Check out the full list of nominees after the jump, and be sure to hop on the comments and register your biggest snubs and surprises!

SDCC12 XTRA: Hands On the Wii U’s ‘NintendoLand’

At Comic Con, The Flickcast team got to finally get our hands on the Wii U and Nintendo’s minigame packed NintendoLand. Like we talked about in our E3 coverage, NintendoLand will feature a collection of mini games inspired by Nintendo franchises, past and present. In total, NintendoLand will contain 12 mini games with half of them already announced and five were playable for us in the Nintendo lounge at SDCC.

First we got to try out Animal Crossing: Sweet Day. Inspired by the stuffed animal-like art design of Animal Crossing, this mini game puts three players on a map where they must collect candies that are placed in various locations, sometimes requiring multiple players to stand on a location together to release the candies. The more candies the players collect, the fatter their heads get and the slower they move. At the same time, they are being pursued by a fourth player who is controlling two guards using the Wii U controller, independently controlling each guard with the different analog sticks and using the controller’s screen.

Communication is key between the players in their hunt for the candy as they need to warn each other about oncoming threats and gather at certain locations to unleash the larger stashes of candy. The player using the Wii U controller gets to really have the most fun though as they get to chase and troll the other players by using pincher style attacks to corner them.

Geek and Sundry’s ‘Written by a Kid’ Debuts with Joss Whedon

We’ll be the first to admit that a YouTube series all about stories written by kids sounds both lame and ridiculous. Who would want to watch that? If the first episode, “Scary Smash,” is any indicator, the answer is everyone.

Surprisingly awesome and hilarious, Written by a Kid features a child telling a story to two adults (writing and creative team Will Bowles and Josh Flaum). The kid’s story is portrayed on-screen as he or she tells it through part animation and part live action. Airing exclusively on the YouTube channel Geek and Sundry, which was founded by Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Eureka, The Guild), Written by a Kid’s episode “Scary Smash” was shown last week at San Diego Comic-Con to roaring applause. Of course, having Avengers director and all around geek god Joss Whedon star in your first episode doesn’t hurt either. The series officially debuted on July 18 on YouTube and new episodes will be posted on Wednesdays.

Despite our initial skepticism, it turns out that with a perfect mix of fun, humor, and adorable childishness, Written by a Kid is good (and interesting)  for all ages. But don’t just take our word for it. Check out”Scary Smash” after the jump.

Legend of Korra Book Two Coming Summer 2013

Avatar: The Last Airbender may have ended in 2008 but it left a devoted fan base that has only grown in recent years. Now the sequel to the hit animated Nickleodeon show is poised to become just as popular if the thousands of people crammed into Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic Con last week were any indication. The cast and creators of The Legend of Korra were on hand at SDCC where they gave out a few hints about what the second part of season one would bring.

Book Two picks up six months after the conclusion of Book One: Air. Team Avatar will travel to the Southern Water Tribe and Southern Air Temple as Korra (Janet Varney) continues mastering the elements. She will also make a trip or two to the spirit world, as hinted at by the Book Two’s subtitle, Spirits. But the team will also split apart as Asami (Seychelle Gabriel) takes control of her father’s company, Future Industries, Bolin (P.J. Byrne) returns to the Pro-Bending arena and Mako (David Faustino) becomes a Republic City policeman.

Even before SDCC, Nickelodeon had already order three more seasons of Korra, for a total of 52 episodes, and it’s easy to see why. The short previews displayed at Comic-Con proved that Korra hasn’t lost its superb balance between action, humor, mystery, the supernatural, and romance. If you aren’t convinced, just watch the Book One highlights below and be sure to keep an eye out for Book Two: Spirits premiering in Summer 2013.

First Look At Stills From New Nicolas Cage, John Cusack Serial Killer Movie ‘Frozen Ground’

Nicholas Cage is a strange film entity. He has developed a manic energy that can be harnessed into compelling work by the right filmmakers. Of course in the hands of the wrong filmmakers he is just all over the place in a crazy mess.

Usually a good sign of what type of Cage performance you are going to get can be found in the supporting cast around him. Deadline has scored the first look at some stills from his newest movie complete with a few of his fellow cast-mates:

The movie written and directed by Scott Walker revolves around Alaska’s most notorious serial predator Robert Hansen (Cusack), who in the span of 12 years abducted more than 24 women, flew them into the Alaskan wilderness, and hunted and murdered them. Hudgens plays the one teenage victim who escaped, and Cage plays the Alaskan State Trooper who finds her on the street — together they work to bring Hansen to justice.

Sounds a little like Kiss the Girls, but given the true story angle and Alaska setting this should stand well enough on its own. What is most interesting about this film is the almost against type roles for both Cage and Cusack. This could be a nice change of pace for both actors.

“World of Warcraft’ The Motion Picture Needs A New Director

This one actually kinda stings, even if the writing has been on the wall for a little while now. The idea of a Sam Raimi directed epic fantasy opus set in the Warcraft world was something of a cosmic no brainer that should have been.

CraveOnline was able to grab a quick quote from Sam Raimi at his Oz comic-con press conference:

“Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director,” Raimi said. “They had to start making it.”

Damn. If anyone is familiar with the roots of Warcraft, the RTS titles Warcraft 1 and 2, then you recall that Bizzard wore its affection of Army of Darkness on its sleeve. The tone of the games matched up rather perfectly, and if you clicked certain characters long enough you would occasionally be treated to quotes from the film.

So it seemed a natural to bring Raimi in to attack the big budget fantasy blockbuster, as his style shares roots with the source material itself. It was also an exciting proposition to see Raimi play around in such a vast fantasy playground.

Alas it seems as if the closest we will get to the latter is the upcoming Oz film and the former will never come to pass. Stay tuned to The Flickcast for any future developments on this project, particularly who has the balls to direct the damn thing.

Coming To Theaters This November: Abraham ‘Lincoln’ Oscar Hunter

Every year there are certain cinematic trends. This can manifest in a couple different ways, one such way is the return to popularity of the Bow and Arrow this year. Another way this manifests is two movies with similar core concepts get released in close proximity.

Like Dante’s Peak & Volcano or Armageddon & Deep Impact, these cousin films share a lot in common on paper. 2012 looks like it might have finally found it’s pairing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter & Lincoln.

Deadline is reporting that Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln biopic has finally set a release date, just in time for the award season push:

The Abraham Lincoln movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Honest Abe will get an exclusive release November 9, 2012, and expand wide November 16, Disney just announced

A relatively ballsy spot to place this movie on the calendar. A Spielberg biopic about Abe Lincoln starring Daniel Day-Lewis could very well be a financial hit as well as a critical darling, but opening limited on the day Skyfall is released and wide the same day as Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2 seems to really limit its potential audience.

It is true that the winter season is loaded with high-profile films, but this seems like a bad move on the part of Dreamworks. Unless of course all they care about is Oscar posturing. In that case this is a potential smart move to let this movie’s quality seem even greater by comparison of the big blockbusters it is up against.

In any event, we now know when Lincoln hits the screens in the states, and truthfully we here at The Flickcast are eager to see it.

EA Officially Announces ‘Battlefield 4’ and Beta Access

Battlefield 4 being announced was only a matter of time. Billed by EA as the franchise that will take down Call of Duty, Battlefield 3 was an intense and awesome multiplayer experience, though it suffered from a lackluster single player campaign. In both a technical sense and as it was regarded by the most hardcore of shooter fans, the multiplayer of Battlefield 3 was the superior game compared to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

On EA’s Origin service on Tuesday, an advertisement popped up urging players to Preorder Medal of Honor: Warfighter. The incentive, access to Battlefield 4. This is the first time that EA has officially and publicly talked about Battlefield 4. Though everyone knew it would be coming, no one knew when.

“Though Battlefield and Medal of Honor Warfighter each offer players a completely unique experience, they are united by their underlying technology base – Frostbite. These are two of the hottest shooters, coming together to deliver a one-two punch of action, intensity and shooter entertainment,” said Frank Gibeau, President of EA Labels

The Beta access will take place during the fall of 2013, which may determine whether or not the game is going to be current or next-gen as well depending on the timing, though EA is tight-lipped about those details.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is set for an October 23, 2012 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Battlefield 4 has no set release date or official announcements for what systems it will be on. Stick to The Flickcast for more info as it becomes available.
