Game Review: ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ for XBox 360

Almost two years since the first time we heard about Street Fighter X Tekken,  it has finally made its way home to consoles. Everyone wondered, how would the characters of Tekken mesh into the Street Fighter world and how the Tekken fanbase would feel about the gameplay mechanics they know and love so much for their favorite fighters being altered to match the fast paced, juggle and projectile based combat of Street Fighter. Because of the quality of the team working on the game, the answers didn’t come as a huge surprise but they were awesome to experience.

Gameplay:

Street Fighter X Tekken knew it needed to bring the best to the screen with this combination of two of the most beloved fighting franchises ever. The unique challenge of bringing the two worlds and not just their characters but their signature styles together was one of massive intrigue. Luckily, the Capcom team was able to piece together a unique tag system differing from past Capcom Vs. titles and using core Street Fighter mechanics to create a new but familiar fighting style.

While maintaining the basic three punches, three kicks and back to block control scheme, Capcom was able to put together new combinations using the tag and juggle system allowing players to not only swap characters on the fly but have multiple characters fighting at the same time on the same side. Signature special maneuver’s return in the form of Super Arts to allow for small cinematic beatdowns, giving Street Fighter’s cast their classic favorite moves while Tekken’s roster is introduced to them for the first time. In addition, the game introduces Pandora Mode, tying in to the game’s story, that allows players to sacrifice one of their characters to give their partner a limited boost (that will be fatal if they don’t win the match in time).

Sony Pictures is the Front Runner for ‘The Mortal Instruments’

With The Hunger Games having such a strong opening last weekend and the big auction for Fifty Shades of Grey, Sony Pictures is looking for the next big trilogy and is currently the frontrunner to partner with Constantin films on the live action adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments.

The first part of the series, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, is set in modern day New York City and centers around Clary, a seemingly ordinary teenager, who discovers she is the descendant of a line of mystical warriors known as Shadowhunters. These Shadowhunters are a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from evil. Clary joins forces with a group of Shadowhunters who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, which is filled with various deadly creatures including demons, warlocks, vampires, and werewolves.

Sony Pictures already has multiple franchises under its belt with the The Da Vinci Code and James Bond. They are also expected to go forward with the second installment in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo franchise. Even with these heavy hitters, the company is looking to fortify its business with a huge trilogy. The studio was one of the most aggressive bidders for screen rights to the E.L. James trilogy Fifty Shades Of Grey.

The First Trailer for the Sundance Hit ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’

There are two genres of film that really need to strike a fine balance to work. Everyone and there mother’s want to make films about time travel or films with massive quirks. Both have a tiny window of success that teeters over a huge sinkhole of failure.

The new film Safety Not Guaranteed wants to dabble in both playgrounds, with a quirk filled tale about a crazy man who may or may not be able to travel through time:

When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes hes solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon. Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you.

The early word from Sundance was very positive, and the trailer does strike a very interesting tone. It will be interesting if the feature can connect with larger audiences, or if this film is destined to be a tiny blip that is fondly remembered by the geek community and no one else.

Check out the trailer after the jump.

Time to Play a Round of Guess Who is Guest Starring on ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’

Spider-Man cartoons have always been among the very best in Super-Hero animation. Most recently the series Spectacular Spider-Man managed to be the fourth or fifth iteration of the character that actually worked as an animated series.

So there is high hopes for the new Ultimate Spider-Man series. In anticipation of the series premiere, Marvel has released a few stills from this upcoming season with certain guest stars cut out. Time to play the guess who’s coming to Ultimate Spider-Man guessing game!

These little teases are nothing new in the comic world, with covers often released with cutouts to ramp up anticipation. Doing this for an upcoming animated show, on the other hand, is downright inspired. This is the perfect way to drum up interest in a new series few people even knew was coming.

The show will hopefully join The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the new watermark for Marvel animation. DC has long held the title of best hero cartoons, but now that Marvel has the backing of Disney, there is no reason we can’t see JLU quality programming set in the Marvel universe.

You can check out the full set of pictures after the jump, and don’t forget to catch the series premiere this Sunday.

First ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’ Gameplay Trailer Arrives

Say what you will about the Transformers movies, the game tie-ins are actually pretty fun. Obviously, others thought so to because the first game was a big success and because of that, Activision is creating a new game sequel called Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

Coming from High Noon Studios, the upcoming game “allows players to experience the darkest hours of the war between the AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS as they vie for control of their dying home world.” In the game, players will be able to “fight through both sides of the Transformers’ most epic battles that culminate in their legendary exodus from Cybertron.”

In addition, players in the game “will embark on an action-packed journey through massive, war-torn environments designed around each character’s unique abilities and alternate forms, including GRIMLOCK’s nearly indestructible T-Rex form and the legendary COMBATICONS combining into the colossal BRUTICUS.”

Previously, we brought you the first reveal trailer for the game and now, to help get you ready for the game’s release, we’ve got two new trailers to share today. One is the first actual gameplay trailer and the other takes you behind the scenes to see how things get done.

Check out both trailers after the break. Look for Transformers: Fall of Cyberton to arrive in stores on August 28.

Fox Gives ‘Bones’ An Eighth Season

To be honest, I stopped watching Fox’s drama Bones around mid-season three. Now sure why but it happened, but it did. However, that hasn’t stopped the show from becoming a powerhouse ratings-wise for Fox.

In fact, the network loves the show so much they’ve just renewed it for an eights season. That’s right, no drawn out negotiations or nail biting here, just an early renewal for a show lots of people still seem to love.

“Over the past seven seasons, Hart Hanson, Stephen Nathan and the incredible Bones cast and crew have redefined the traditional crime procedural with an irreverent and adventurous sensibility and I’m really happy to have this distinctive, fan-favorite on our schedule for another season,” Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said.

Well, there you have it. Look for Bones to return to Fox’s schedule next Monday with new episodes and then back in the Fall for a brand new season.
