Elizabeth Olsen Offered Lead Female Role in Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’

The casting has not come particularly quick or easy for the Spike Lee directed remake of the Korean thriller Oldboy.

Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Men In Black III) locked in as the lead character quite early in the process but the quest for a villain so far has involved names ranging from Christian Bale to  Clive Owen, with even Colin Firth being in the mix. All have passed for various reasons and the search continues.

Filling the role of Brolin’s love interest, Marie, has been an equally difficult task. Both Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska have been offered and rejected the part of the female lead role. It is now being reported that the role of Marie has been offered to Elizabeth Olsen.

The film follows an average man who is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, he soon finds out that his kidnapper has a greater plan for him and is set onto a path of pain and suffering in an attempt to uncover the motive of his mysterious tormentor.

The lesser known Olsen sister, Elizabeth seemingly sprang out of nowhere at Sundance 2011 to become one of America’s most sought after young actresses thanks to parts in the soon to be released Silent House and the under the radar film Martha Marcy May Marlene. With three other projects listed to start in 2013, she’s not going away anytime soon. She’s also got a sizable gap in her schedule before those projects are due to start, which makes this a very plausible option.

Check It Out: What If ‘Star Wars: Episode 1’ Didn’t Suck?

Sometimes, there are great atrocities to the nerd culture that just can’t be undone. Things like Catwoman, The Spirit, and Star Trek: Nemesis that are engrained in our culture so deeply, that it’s hard to forget they existed due to how bad they were. That’s where YouTube movie analyst machine Belated Media takes us for a trip down memory lane that doesn’t make us hate being a geek.

He has taken the recently rejuvenated Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and broken it down to show all of its flaws. Unlike the hundreds of other YouTubers who have done the same, Belated Media has gone the extra step in explaining what would make this film good, and how they can fix these things.

Of course, it’s a bit too late to actually take back things like the death of Darth Maul or the casting of Anakin Skywalker, but it’s still nice to think of what could have been if Phantom Menace  was actually good, and didn’t suck so hard with junkyard owners who were immune to Jedi mind tricks, or Jar Jar Binks’ pure existence.

So take a look at Belated Media’s massive analysis of the film after the jump, and join us on the journey of what it would have been like had George Lucas not completely sold out and only cared about making toys that kids everywhere would one day throw out.

Surprise! ‘Ghostbusters 3’ May Never Happen

Dan Aykroyd has been trying to get Ghostbusters 3 off the ground for a long time now, but it seems he has hit a speed bump. After generating interest from the original crew, including Harold Ramis and director Ivan Reitman, the studio, and fans all around the world, but he can’t seem to get his good friend Bill Murray on board.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Aykroyd said that the film is currently in “suspended animation”. At this rate he doesn’t believe the film will ever get made.

“The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it,” said Aykroyd.”I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.”

The Rhino Comes to the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Game

One thing Spider-Man has always had going for him is an iconic rogues gallery rivaled only by that of DC Comic’s Batman. Though some started out with simple or silly premises like an evil doctor with extra appendages or an old bald man who liked to fly around town, years of phenomenal writers have given these characters unexpected levels of depth and personality. One such character is the Rhino. One such character is The Rhino.

Starting off as a common thug, the Rhino, especially in recent years, has become an incredibly interesting character. Having tried to rid his life of his crime ridden past, Aleksei Sytsevich was pulled back in unexpectedly after the tragic death of his wife Oksana was killed during the recent “Gauntlet” story arc by a new criminal trying to don the mantle of the Rhino. Most recently, the Rhino was found as a part of Doctor Octopus’s latest incarnation of the Sinister Six.

It looks like now Rhino will be making his way to the Spider-Man video game based on the newly relaunched Amazing Spider-Man movie franchise. Unrestricted because of the comic’s longstanding continuity, the team at Beenox was able to create their own mythos behind Aleksei and how he came into this Spider-Man’s world.

Check out the reveal trailer full bio, interview about this new Rhino and screen shots after the break for the Rhino coming to the Amazing Spider-Man for XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Pop Star Justin Bieber Sued by Mobile Game Developer

At the beginning of February, developer RC3 released an Android game inspired by pop star Justin Beaver entitles Joustin’ Beaver. The game plays off of Bieber’s real life celebrity woes and resembles his hairstyle and fashion sense in the form of a beaver. Bieber’s people responded to the game with a cease and desist order under the claims, not that they have a problem with Bieber being made fun of through the app, but that consumers may see Bieber’s trademarked likeness and feel the product is an officially licensed product from Bieber himself.

RC3 responded that there is no doubt that Joustin’ Beaver is inspired by the pop sensation. It is undeniable for them to even try to do so. They do contend however that the game is created as an act of parody which is legally protected by first amendment rights. RC3 filed suit against Bieber to protect their game (and most likely garner lots of press that the game would have never originally received to further push sales of it).

“In an effort to comment upon the Defendant’s life, the Plaintiff, RC3 developed the aforementioned App entitled ‘Joustin’ Beaver.’ The App, a video game, is a parody of the commercial success of the Defendant and any celebrity. The parody app portrays a beaver floating on a log down a river. The beaver presents with bangs, a lance, and a purple sweater. The beaver knocks ‘Phot-Hogs’ that are attempting to take his photograph into the river with his lance. The beaver also signs ‘Otter-graphs.’ The beaver also must dodge the ‘whirlpool of success,’ which will lead beaver out of control, while navigating the river.”

Joustin’ Beaver is currently on sale on the Android marketplace for .99.

Game Review: ‘Rayman Origins’ for PlayStation Vita

\Rayman Origins was released last week as one of the launch titles for the Playstation Vita, and while it’s no stranger to the gaming world after its release on Playstation 3 last year, it’s still one of my favorite titles for Sony’s new portable.

I’m coming at this review from the perspective of someone who absolutely, positively loved the original Rayman on Playstation. The colors, the environments, the gameplay. My twelve year old self found it amazing. I was fascinated by the idea that, while the PSX had all this graphical power (hey, at the time, it did), that a developer would choose to create a cartoony, side scrolling platformer instead of something three dimensional.

Rayman Origins takes everything great about the original Rayman, all those awesome fun things that were magical about it on the Playstation, and brings them to the Vita. While this game was originally available for the Playstation 3, it just shines on the portable.

Supposedly ‘Men In Black III’ is WIll Smith’s Idea

In what is probably the least surprising news ever, Men in Black III was all Will Smith’s idea. Men in Black III director Barry Sonnenfeld was recently interviewed by UK entertainment magazine Contactmusic, in which he confirmed that the story and plot of Men in Black III was completely thought up by Will Smith.

”Will calls me Baz.  When we were shooting ‘Men In Black II’ [in 2002], one night he said ‘Hey Baz, I think I have an idea for number three’. The basic idea was that Will’s character, Agent J, would have to go back into the past to save his partner,” said Sonnenfeld.”It allowed the movie to take place in another era, and us to learn more about Tommy Lee Jones’ character. But it turned out to be a very long process of development, mainly because of the knotting issues of time travel, the time travel thing was really hard”
