Game Review: ‘Halo: Reach’ for XBox 360

How do you make a Halo game without Master Chief? Somehow Halo 3: ODST, a converted expansion turned full retail release, was able to do it. But ODST wasn’t about the Spartans. It was about a group of ground level grunts just trying to survive impossible odds. Halo: Reach focuses on a group of Spartans called Noble Squad and the six members as they fight through the final days of the planet Reach. The game is a prequel to the original Halo: Combat Evolved and there are lots of little references and Easter Eggs to the events to come in Halo. But still, is it really Halo without Spartan John-117, Master Chief? After just a short time with the game you will agree it is.

Gameplay:

Halo: Reach takes the tried and true Halo formula of being one of the best FPS console games and continues to run with it. Fast paced combat with occasional instances of vehicular sequences, one incredibly short stealth sequence and the E3 revealed space battle encompass all that is Halo: Reach. The most fulfilling part of Reach’s gameplay is how even though it does have the “I’ve done this before” feel to it, it still has the addictive nature that made the previous Halo titles so special. It will be likely that the XBox Live top five charts over the coming weeks consist solely of Halo 3, Halo: Reach and three Call of Duty titles because of this.

Gameplay has been switched up a little bit from previous titles however. Most notable is the inclusion of armor abilities. As first seen in the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta, the item system has been removed and replaced by these abilities that are “built-in” to the Spartan’s armor. These include Jet packs, Stealth and Sprinting. The jet pack is easily the most fun new power to use as it allows for mid-air sniping along with dropping into the heat of battle using the grav-hammer to level groups of unsuspecting grunts and brutes. Another interesting new ability is the hologram which creates a diversion as a holographic image of yourself runs forward drawing fire momentarily before the Covenant forces realize it’s not actually you.

‘Community’ Planning A Claymation Christmas Special

If there was any doubt that Community was the most creative show on television, this years Christmas episode will be done using stop-motion animation. That’s right, like the classic Christmas specials Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

According to creator and executive producer Dan Harmon, “It’s going to be like a timeless Christmas classic in the stop-motion medium that used to give us so much happiness as children,”  He continued to explain that the whole episode will be stop motion and written as a continuation of existing story lines.”There’s a reason for it to be stop-motion animated, but it’s not a dream. It still exists within the reality of the show,” Harmon said, noting that characters will be able to refer to the episode’s events afterward.

The episode will be written by Dino Stamatopoulos, who also plays the character Star-burns in the series. This will be one of many guest writers and directors that we can expect this season.

This episode is also just one of several upcoming special episodes, including what Harmon called “an extravagant and insane” Halloween episode and a completely space-themed episode. “Second season, we’re coming out of the gate with episodes that I refuse to wait to do,” Harmon said. “We’re doing stuff that you shouldn’t be allowed to do in an entire season.”

Catch Two New Clips From ‘Superman/Batman: Apocalypse’

DC’s animated home video department has been on a role as of late. Since last year, they’ve turned out films following Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Justice League, and even a few ansillary characters such as Jonah Hex and The Spectre. The quality of the films have seemingly increased exponentially and the next film, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse looks to continue that trend.

The film follows the Superman/Batman: Supergirl story arc from books by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner, and Peter Steigerwald and gets another all-star cast of Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tim Daly as Superman, Summer Glau as Supergirl, and Andre Braugher as Darkseid. For those not in the know, here’s the lowdown from the press release.

In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor — leading Batman and Superman to encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans.

Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.

The film drops on DVD and Blu-Ray September 28th, but before that, we’ve got two brand new clips for you to check out after the jump, so get to it!

War Movie Mondays: ‘Rough Riders’ Miniseries

This week’s pick salutes the heroes of a forgotten American war, The Spanish American War which until the First Gulf War, was the shortest war in American history. John Milius (Red Dawn, Flight of the Intruder, The Wind and the Lion), directs Rough Riders, which stars Tom Berenger as future American president Teddy Roosevelt who commanded the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry unit during the war.

Originally aired as a three hour mini series in 1997 on TNT Networks, the film is a fantastic look at the men who made history against Spanish hegemony in 1898 Cuba. The film stars a who’s who of great actors and characters who would help to shape history. Gary Busey (Maj. Gen. Joe Wheeler) commander of all cavalry units during the war, and a U.S. Congressman as well, Brian Keith (President William McKinley), Dale Dye (Col. Leonard Wood) Marshall R. Teague (Lt. John “Black Jack” Pershing), and Adam Storke (Stephen Crane).

As the United States was entering the twentieth century, its presence on the world stage was beginning to take hold. The Spanish American War was what allowed the U.S. to become a major player in world events, and allowed the U.S. to forever wield the “Big Stick” of foreign policy. The film opens up with a brilliant montage of newspaper headlines which depict the defenseless Cubans battling their Spanish masters, while Uncle Sam looks on with a sense of anger and an overwhelming desire to help the oppressed.
