The Flickcast – Page 636 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

ABC Bringing BBC’s ‘MI-5′ to the U.S.

Are you a fan of compelling British TV programs about spies and the world they live and work in? Ever seen a show called Spooks (aka MI-5)? If so, this post is for you.

According to Deadline, the BBC series Spooks is headed to television here in the States and will land at ABC. The network has reportedly closed a deal for the show and will enlist writer Michael Seitzman (Empire State, North Country) to pen the script.

The show, created by David Wolstencroft, is extremely popular in the UK and follows a team of MI-5 officers who work out of offices known as The Grid. From there, they carry out missions aimed at stopping evil in its many forms plus they deal with internal and personality conflicts among the team and their families. The show originally launched in the UK in 2002, with a new season scheduled to premiere this fall.

We previously reviewed season one of MI-5 here at The Flickcast and back then it got a positive review. Once the series reaches American shores in a new, Americanized version, we’ll have to revisit it and see how it compares to the original. Let’s hope favorably.

Check Out The First Awesome Trailer For ‘Bioshock Infinite’

While we probably have to wait for a while before we ever get a Bioshock film, we have some fantastic cinematic sequences from the previous two games to hold us over. Now, we’ve got a brand new trailer that will give us enough to get excited until Bioshock Infinite, the final game, hits stores in late 2012.

The third game in the series takes place in 1912, years before the events of Bioshock and Bioshock 2. If the first game took place in the underwater city of Rapture, and the second game followed through the city after it surfaced, this game understandably takes place in the sky city of Columbia. Consider it a steampunk Cloud City from Star Wars.

The new protagonist of the game is Booker Dewitt, a disgraced ex detective who’s onto a hot trail that will uncover a sinister plot. Not a whole lot more is known about the game, as the very first news is hitting today, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we get info.

In the meantime, check out the first new trailer for Bioshock Infinite after the jump, and be sure to pick it up on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC in 2012.

‘Secret Origin’ The Story of DC Comics Coming Soon Plus a Trailer

I’ve always loved history. Discovering what happened in the past is always a great way to make sure things go smoothly in the present and in the future. I also love comics. So, when these two things meet, you can imagine how happy that makes me.

Case in point is the new documentary about the history of DC comics called Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics. In it you get to see a whole bunch of great current and former DC artists and writers discuss the formation and history of one of the greatest media companies ever. Narrated by Ryan Reynolds, the documentary features interviews and commentary by Neal Adams, Karen Berger, Dan DiDio, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Dwayne McDuffie, Grant Morrison, Dennis O’Neil, Paul Pope, Louise Simonson, Mark Waid, Len Wein, and Marv Wolfman. Yes, that’s lot of amazing people.

“From the bans to the breakthroughs, from humble pulp beginnings to the literary rise of the graphic novel, the story of DC Comics holds a mirror to an ever-evolving enterprise and the society reflected in its comic book pages,” said Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment. “It’s a true American story – Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics is a riveting, exciting, surprising revelation of that fascinating history and the men and women who forged it.”

I’ll bet money that that’s completely true. In fact, no bet necessary, I’ll be buying this when it comes out because I know it’s going to be fascinating.

Check out the trailer for the documentary after the jump. Secret Origin arrives on DVD November 9th.

Exclusive Interview: WWE’s World Champion Kane Talks About His Upcoming Summerslam Match

Comic-Con doesn’t just mean comics as we are sure you have noticed. It means TV, movies and toys as well. Someone very familiar with this is the WWE. World Wrestling Entertainment has relaunched their action figure line under Mattel over the past year and as a result had a huge presence at SDCC.

And it wasn’t just toys that were being shown off. Unlike He-Man, the characters in the WWE action figure line are real people and they came to show themselves off at San Diego.

One of the most dominant men in the WWE over the past decade has been Kane. The Big Red Monster holds records in the WWE’s Royal Rumble match, garners multiple WrestleMania showcase matches under his belt and has been a multi-time champion with an impressive 16 title reigns, including a staggering 9 reigns in the tag team division and a WWE Championship.

Most recently, Kane won SmackDown’s Money in the Bank Ladder match at the Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View. In doing so, he was able to cash in his Money in the Bank title match and defeat Rey Mysterio later that night to start his first reign as World Heavyweight Champion.

Four New ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ Clips Arrive

This weekend may be a tough decision for many moviegoers, as Eat Pray Love and The Expendables open against fan favorite Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. We know which we’ll be seeing (probably all three), but in the meantime, we’ve got some awesome clips from Pilgrim which should get you ready for the movie.

In the film Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defend his love for new girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) by defeating her seven evil exes. Those exes include names like Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and more.

In the clips we’ve got for you, you can see Cera actually show some emotion other than empathy, which is a pretty big leap if you’ve seen his other films. Fun fact for all of you Arrested Development fans: Mae Whitman, who plays evil ex Roxy in the film has worked with Cera before, as Ann (“Egg”) on Development. We can assure you that they won’t be making out in this one.

The film is based on the comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley and comes from director Edgar Wright, the mind behind other fan faves such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Check out all four clips from the movie after the jump. See Scott Pilgrim take on the seven evil exes this Friday (That’s tomorrow).

First Official Conan O’Brien TV Spot Goes Live On TBS

It feels like only yesterday when we were cursing the names of Jay Leno and NBC for what happened to Conan O’Brien and the entire Tonight Show fiasco. Here we are, 8 months later and Conan is already getting prepped for his new home on TBS.

The late night comedian signed a deal back in April to be the host of his very own show over on the cable network. The show pushes George Lopez’s show to midnight every night, but Lopez was more than happy with the deal as long as it meant O’Brien got to be his lead-in.

While the show is set to start as early as November, TBS has already started prepping their audience with a new 10 second spot. It may only be 10 seconds, but it manages to promote Conan in a bizarre Monty Python-esque way, which seems to be right down our alley.

O’Brien has already stated that he’s bringing his sidekick Andy Richter along for the show, as well as many of his writers that came with him from Late Night and even The Tonight Show. You can expect to see an official premiere date to draw closer, but as for now, we’ll just have to take our Conan dose in the form of a 10 second ad.

Check it out after the jump.

Viral Marketing Kicks Off For Abram’s ‘Super 8′ With The Rocket Poppeteers

Some could say that one of the best elements of 2008’s Cloverfield was the immense viral marketing and alternate reality games that lead up to the film’s release. It seems that the same marketing team behind that film is at it again for J.J. Abram’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Super 8.

The film’s plot is shrouded in a good amount of mystery, but what we’ve gleaned is that the story follows two young men who capture something they weren’t meant to see on a super 8 home video camera, which leads to all kinds of chaos.

A few months back, an ARG popped up site that seems to be made for the film over at www.scariestthingieversaw.com. Once clicked on, the site becomes a vintage code screen that takes you to a dead end after about 5 minutes of execution lines. There are tons of different commands that take you to several puzzling files, but overall the site was done as a major viral marketing plan.

One of the cool things at the viral site is if you enter the command .PRINT SCOM8. Two sheets are sent to your printer of a vintage newspaper with an ad for The Rocket Poppeteeers. If you signed up, you’d get a letter welcoming you as a new member of the Poppeteer Astronaut Program.

Hands-On: ‘DC Universe Online’ For PC and Cinematic Trailer

At Comic-Con, we had some time to spend talking with the developers and getting some more hands on exposure to DC Universe Online. In addition to talking to Executive Creative Director on the game Jim Lee,  we also got to talk to some of the more hands on members of the team.

Up until this point, the focus of the DC Universe Online message has been your own character’s adventure with interaction with the iconic characters. What they are looking to do now is have a mentor method where to learn from the Iconic characters such as Batman, players must experience what it’s like to be them.

The result is the competitive versus mode that allows for players to take on the role of characters like Batman or the Joker and go up against other players in order to advance as characters. The theory is that by playing as these characters, players will better understand their strengths and weaknesses, their strategies and their tactics. These matches go from 2 vs. 2 to up to 16 vs. 16. The game modes will include territories, capture the flag and sabotage.

It also allows for quick jump in and jump out gameplay for a player who only has a few minutes to play and doesn’t have the time to complete a full thirty or more minute quest in the game. Players gain PvP points that can be spent later on unlocking other characters or their character’s raid suit.

At release, Robin and Harley will be available for players for the heroes and villains sides respectively. Gaining currency, players can then unlock Nightwing, Bane and Huntress, eventually unlocking the Joker at the highest levels. As a bonus to people pre-ordering the game, Batman will be available to them from the start.
