Full Trailer For ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Goes Online

This year isn’t all that heavy with comic book movies. While we have films like The Losers and Jonah Hex, they don’t really compare to the anticipation by both comic fans and video game fans alike for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

The film comes from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, who already gained Whedon-esque geek credibility with international audiences. In both of his previous films, he turned a genre like “zombie films” or “80s action films” into his own parody, and he’s doing it all over again with video games in Pilgrim.

In the movie, based on the series of comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) falls in love with a pink-haired girl named Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). They start to date and everything seems swell, until Scott is told that in order to date Ramona, he has to defeat her 7 evil ex boyfriends.

It all plays out as ridiculous as it sounds, with some pretty amazing visuals, and intense fight sequences from the ex’s (played by Jason Schwartzman, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and more).

A Geeky Guy’s Survival Kit for ‘Sex and the City 2’

So, you’ve just clicked on my column and your wondering what the frak a commentary of Sex and the City 2 is doing on the epitome of all things geek, also known as The Flickcast? Well, Sex and the City 2 is the epitome of geek sheik… for women. Before continuing, I would ask all guys to scroll down as there are helpful hints on how to survive the Sex and the City 2 experience with your girlfriend.

There are some movies I will wait in line with my fired-up guy friends to experience the madness of a 12:01 screening, such as The Dark Knight. With $3 million in box office cash coming from midnight screenings, it seems some women are yearning for similar evening excitement. I thought about planning the typical midnight screening party and then smarted up. Many a lady enjoy a relaxed, less-crowded Saturday afternoon flick, so I thought I‘d give it a shot.

Since SATC 2 worships luxury brands, what better way to experience this film than with luxury accommodations? I skipped the lines, the sticky seats, and booming sound and opted instead for a screening reminiscent of a 60’s era Pan Am first class flight. Arriving at Gold Class Cinemas in Pasadena, I walked into a modern lounge where I chillaxed for a bit. I was then escorted by the cute wait staff into a private-like screening room that sat around 40.

My first piece of advice to those good guys who willingly accompany their gals is to drink and sit in very comfy chairs. My chair just so happened to be a red suede recliner that featured a happy green button that when pressed brought servers to our seats with stiff Flirtinis, pillows, blankets, and duck tacos in hand.

Cortney’s TV Digest: What’s On In June

Last month’s television show finales like LOST, 24 and Chuck more were packed with emotional endings and incredible cliffhangers. But while there might not be many new TV shows on the horizon for June, it’s always nice to get a bunch of shows returning that you’ve been looking forward to.

The HBO Bunch

Summer is when HBO shines. This month we have returning True Blood, Hung, and Entourage, three of the network’s biggest shows of the entire year.

Last fall, True Blood ended with a cliffhanger, as the second Sookie agreed to marry Bill he completely disappeared. This season, things are sure to heat up between Sook and Eric in Bill’s absence, and with the arrival of werewolves Sookie’s loyalty is bound to be tested. True Blood returns Sunday June 14th at 10 PM.

The first season of Hung was absolutely amazing, and the show is no less relevant with America’s economy still in turmoil and in need of a few good laughs. Hung returns to HBO on June 27th.

Entourage is returning this summer for its seventh season, which will revolve around Vince’s new role in an apocalyptic drama. Expect to see some interesting guest stars including John Stamos, Bob Saget and Jessica Simpson. Vince and the rest of the gang also return to your TV on June 27th.

Apple Sells Over 2 Million iPads

In just about two months, Apple has made what must be a record in the tech industry, reportedly selling two million units of their uber-popular iPad. And amazingly, the majority of those numbers came from domestic sales as the iPad only went on sale internationally last weekend. When international sales figures start rolling in, the ‘magical’ tablet will be on course to outpace sales of just about every must-have device, including Apple’s own iPhone.

Additionally, apps specifically built for the iPad’s much larger screen have topped 5,000 in recent days, but represent only a small fraction of the nearly 200,000 total apps most of which are designed for the iPhone or iPod touch. The big concern now seems to be whether the Foxconn factory in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen can produce enough iPads to meet demand. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs mentioned this issue as the new sales figures were announced.

“We appreciate [customer] patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone,” said Jobs.

Keeping up with demand isn’t Foxconn’s only concern at the moment as an investigation into an alarming rash of worker suicides has begun. More than 300,000 people sleep, eat and work at the sprawling factory complex and thus far in 2010, 10 people have committed suicide, while three others have tried. Other manufacturers besides Apple contract with Foxconn, including Dell, HP Dell, and Sony, each of which have begun their own investigation into worker conditions.

Exclusive: Director Vincenzo Natali Talks ‘Splice’, Mice and ‘Swamp Thing’ Rumors

This Friday, the Science Fiction/Horror hyprid Splice hits theaters, and we recently got the chance to speak with director Vincenco Natali. Natali spoke about the upcoming film, the horror genre, and even his prospects of working on a film adaptation of the DC Comics character Swamp Thing.

In Splice, Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star as genetic engineers who recklessly splice human and animal DNA, the result being Dren (nerd spelled backward), a creature that brings to light the unintended consequences of messing with mother nature.  

The Flickcast: The movie touches on medical ethics, moral implications of medical research, and it is very timely and  topical right now. Was that your intention, or is it just fortuitous that some of these things are closer to  becoming a reality?

Vincenzo Natali: The movie was really inspired by this thing called the Vacanti mouse, which was a mouse that appeared to have a human ear growing out of it’s back, it was pretty disturbing.

You know, we have a very visceral reaction to these things, and it really inspired me in a way. As it turned out, in the length of time that it took me to develop the script the science really evolved exponentially.

War Movie Mondays: ‘Where Eagles Dare’

1986’s Where Eagles Dare is a World War II spy/action film which is based on Alistair MacLean’s novel about a group of allied commandos who must break into an impregnable German fortress in the Bavarian Alps and rescue an American General who has vital information concerning plans for the “second front.” They must free him before the Germans can extract this information and change the the course of the war.

Richard Burton (Maj. John Smith), Clint Eastwood (Lt. Morris Schaffer), Mary Ure (Mary Elison), & Ingrid Pitt (Heidi) are the commando squad sent to free the General and uncover a conspiracy involving not only who they were sent to rescue, but what they were really sent to do. Brian G. Hutton (Kelly’s Heroes), directs with amazing style and non stop action with a screenplay adapted by MacLean himself.

The one thing that I have always loved about the film besides the cinematography, and the Ron Goodwin score is that you’re always cold while watching it. When the commandos first parachute into the Alps, they come down during a snow storm and discover that one of their own had his neck broken in the drop.

You instantly feel as if you are there in the snow with them, almost like Sam Peckinpah’s sandy desert landscapes in The Wild Bunch. Smith carefully inspects the injury and discovers that the break was caused by the butt of a rifle or some other weapon. Smith now realizes that one if not several in the group may be possible German agents sent to make sure that the mission fails.

Full Synopsis for ‘Green Lantern’ Revealed

So here’s what we know about Green Lantern, the upcoming film from DC and Warner Bros. The story follows Hal Jordan (not Kyle Rayner or John Stewart, as speculated), Mark Strong is playing Sinestro, and Peter Sarsgaard is playing the evil Dr. Hector Hammond. Given those two roles, you would think that the main villain would be one of-if not both of-these two characters, right? Think again.

We’re just now getting word from Warner’s official one sheet synopsis of the film that the main villain will be an evil universal force known as “Parallax.” We know this name too, as it’s the creature that inhabits Jordan in the comics, forcing him to go nuts and practically wipe out the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.

The film also stars Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller, Taika Waititi (Flight of the Conchords) as Abin Sur, and Tim Robbins as Hammond’s father, Senator Robert Hammond.

‘Pokemon Black’ and ‘Pokemon White’ Slated for Spring 2011

It started with Red and Blue over ten years ago. Now with millions of games sold, a seemingly neverending supply of cards and cartoons, Pokémon will be releasing two new versions for the Nintendo DS family of consoles in Spring 2011.

As always, the games will feature new Pokémon for players to collect including certain ones specific to their respective cartridge. Pokémon Black players will have exclusive access to the legendary Reshiram while Pokémon White players will be able to get their hands on the Zekrom. Ever the marketing machine, this formula has proven successful for Nintendo as ways to encourage repeat purchases from the hardcore customerbase who wants to catch ’em all.

Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing was quoted that “Pokémon is a true worldwide franchise with legions of fans in every corner of the globe. We know these fans will be thrilled to discover this new generation of Pokémon next year.”

This announcement comes fast on the heels of the successful launch of Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver which combined have sold 8.4 million units to date. This combination added to previous Pokémon titles has boosted the franchise well past the 200 million mark in sales.
