The Flickcast – Page 735 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

The Flickcast’s ‘On The Radar’

This week On the Radar Leonard Nimoy says goodbye to Spock, Robert Downey Jr. may journey to the land of Oz, and Mickey Rourke wants to play one of the most feared Mongolians in history.

Did Jason Voorhees just get killed? Oh, the irony!

However evil slasher Jason Voorhees may appear to be it seems there is something that can stop him afterall-movie studios.  While the recent remake of Friday the 13th garnished nearly $100 million worldwide, producer Brad Fuller responded to a fan via Twitter and said a sequel may be dead.

Platinum Dunes does not seem interested in continuing the story at this time.  Let’s not count Jason out yet, though.  Freddy Krueger is about to leap bag onto the big screen in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.  If that’s successful, Voorhees may climb out of the grave once more.

Leonard Nimoy to hang up his Spock ears for good

While not as active as his friend William Shatner on the acting front, Leonard Nimoy took fanboys by storm by reprising his role as Spock in J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot.  He caused further excitement by taking on the enigmatic role of William Bell in the TV series Fringe.  Unfortunately, it seems Nimoy is ready to step back from the celebrity life:

“I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto,” he says, referring to the actor who portrayed a youthful Spock in last summer’s smash Star Trek relaunch. “He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”

Finally on 30 Rock, Jack has a dating dilemma when he tries to balance two women and Liz tries to prove she’s fun by going to every singles event she can possibly attend. Fan Film Friday: Iron Man Punches Hugh Grant In The Face

Iron Man 2 hits theaters in exactly 2 weeks, which means that you can expect to see the internet turned upside down and twisted into a gigantic Iron Man playground in that time. Not only will Paramount be sending out as much fodder for the press to chew on, but it’s nice to see that fans out there are gearing up for the sequel as well.

Over the past few weeks, YouTube author ReubenPac has been posting some great Iron Man mash ups with AC/DC tracks and other films. Jon Favreau tweeted about his Iron Man & ACDC vs. Dirty Dancing video, as well as a few less than humorous mash ups with Titanic and When Harry Met Sally.

All of the CG rendering was done by the author, and use of the Maya 3D modeling program. They’re all pretty impressive, but by far the most impressive (and the funniest) is the clip of Iron Man punching Hugh Grant in the face. It’s random, and uses AC/DC as an emphasis on how the band has become the personal soundtrack to all things Iron Man.

Check out the clip after the jump, laugh, and keep it here for more on Iron Man 2 as the May 7th release date draws near.

TV RECAP: ‘The Office: Secretary’s Day’

Erin’s adorableness and innocent naivete has been a bright spot all this season, but, long-standing crush aside, I didn’t think it’d be enough to carry the bulk of an episode. Fortunately, I was wrong, because “Secretary’s Day” looks behind Erin’s cheerfully upbeat child to reveal her increasingly disturbing and traumatic past—and finds comedy gold!

The episode opens with the gang huddled around Oscar’s computer to watch a Sesame Street clip of Cookie Monster redubbed with Kevin’s voice (a comparison long overdue).  Like a cruel preschool nickname, it takes off, and pretty soon the entire office is united in torturing Kevin with their best and worst Cookie Monster impersonations. (And it’s a credit to the show that the funniest part for regular viewers is not the actual clip itself but the fact that Angela loves it.)

Kevin files a complaint with the weasely new guy Gabe, who sees it as an opportunity for him to assert whatever authority he has by cracking down on the harassment (what is his position anyway? I thought he was the tech guy, too). His stern(?) warning (??) goes ignored, so Gabe tries to lower the boom (???) by suspending Jim, Pam, and Dwight without pay…which he later finds is beyond his authority(!).

Review: ‘The Losers’

I did you a favor and refrained  from making a pun out of the film’s title in my headline, though I had to physically restrain myself from doing so. From acting to editing, to continuity and dialogue, this film was an awful mess.

I’ve grown to  enjoy and look forward to comic book adaptations over the last year. Watchmen and Kick-Ass were some of my favorite films of the last twelve months, so I went into The Losers (based on a comic by Andy  Diggle) with an open mind and high expectations.

Things went swimmingly well  for the first five minutes  or so, but then the movie had its first action sequence, and director David Sylvain embarks on a torrid love affair with ill-advised editing.  He loves slow-motion. He loves the fast edit. He loves the stop/go/stop again editing. Most of all, he just loves to edit the holy living crap out of any scene he can get his hands on. As long as the camera is moving erratically, he is like a kid in a candy shop, and it ruins the movie.

The editing tricks become the primary focus of the movie, and once you start noticing them, they will plaque you incessantly until the conclusion of the film. There is just no need for a lot of it.  For instance, there is a kinda-sorta hot love scene between Zoe Saldana and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Breck Eisner Taking On ‘Escape From New York’ Reboot

As usual, the Hollywood brain trust has decided that instead of looking forward and creating some original work, they will instead look to the past for inspiration and take yet another great film and add it to the remake/reboot pile. The film in question this time, John Carpenter’s Escape from New York.

Granted, Escape isn’t exactly a classic in the strictest sense of the word, but it is considered by many, myself included, to be one of the best action/sci-fi movies of the last thirty years. So, much like Predators and so many others of late, I’m not exactly thrilled it will be receiving the reboot treatment.

That said, there is one potential bright spot here now that we know Breck Eisner will be handling the directing duties on the film. His recent work on The Crazies showed he’s got a lot of skills and my hope is that he’ll be able to do something really interesting and innovative with the Escape story.

In case you’re not familiar with the original 1981 film (which if you’re not, get familiar) it was set in a futuristic 1997 where a walled-off Manhattan island had been turned into a maximum-security prison. Air Force One, with the President on board, crashes on the island and newly captured super criminal and ex-war hero Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is coerced into a rescue mission. The new film will reportedly try to mix in an origin story for Snake with the story of the original film.

Verizon’s Latest Android Phone ‘Droid Incredible’ Drops April 29th

Droid IncredibleA seemingly non-stop parade of awesome Android-powered mobile phones have released over the past six months. Notable handsets include the original Motorola Droid, Google’s Nexus One, among others. On April 29th, Verizon will release HTC’s newest creation, the ‘Droid Incredible’ and it will be available for $199.99 (with 2-year activation). What makes this newest droid so incredible? Let’s take a close look at the specs, shall we?

Powered by the spunky 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Droid Incredible uses the same screen as the Nexus One; a vibrant 3.7-inch, 800-by-480 OLED touch screen that dominates the business side.

Flip it over and it’s difficult not to notice the 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, something of a necessity with the notoriously poor low-light performance experienced with these built-in phone cams. For reference, the older Motorola Droid released last November also sported dual LED flashes, but topped out at 5 megapixels.

Running the latest Android OS v2.1 and sporting 8GB of on-board memory, HTC is also including its Android over-lay, HTC Sense UI which spiffs up the stock Android start screen tremendously. With HTC Sense enabled, your home screen starts up with a gorgeous animated weather graphic and over-sized clock. Flick your screen to the left or right and you’ll have access to full-screen contacts with photos, e-mail and numerous social networking hooks.
