New Trailer for ‘Where the Wild Things Are’

wildthingsareNow that the Summer blockbuster season has settled down and most of the tent pole films for the year have been put to bed, it’s time for the sleeper hits of 2009 to shine. The Fall is a pretty big time for films like District 9, Gamer, and of course Where the Wild Things Are to take over the box office in a substantial way.

The first trailer for Where the Wild Things Are hit a few months back, and didn’t show us very much. Still, we knew that director Spike Jonze, who was the mastermind behind this stroke of genius, would do the children’s book classic. We now get a new trailer filled with plenty of footage of the titular “wild things” and surprisingly lots of James Gandolfini.

Also starring Forest Whitaker, Catherine Ohara, Lauren Ambrose, Mark Ruffalo, Catherine Keener, and Max Records, Warner’s Where the WIld Things Are hits screens October 16th nationwide.

Check it out the brand new trailer after the jump.

Review: ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’

G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra movie image (3)

Two years ago, there wasn’t much to be said about a film that was only based off of a toy line. Then a dude named Michael Bay came along and changed all that, making over a zillion dollars with two films about robots that change into other things. The movies weren’t exactly rich with story or character development, but they did the source material justice, which is all most fans wanted. One would think that a movie about a secret squad of soldiers would be more believable, but sadly, this wasn’t the case.

There is more than enough source material to play with, given the G.I. Joe toys, comics, and many incarnations of the TV show and Director Stephen Sommers’ other projects including Van Helsing and The Mummy have a decent story and are both relatively entertaining. For this film, however, it felt like Sommers left the passion and creativity he had for his previous films at home when reporting to the set of Joe — which is pretty evident in the first five minutes of the film.

It’s easy to pick on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra for its poor dialogue or predictable story because when you force lines like “he’s a real American hero” into a scene, it warrants ridicule. When it comes to the story, it’s predictable because it is a blatant ripoff of another film, when the main villain brainwashes his victims to do his bidding, identified by a small lesion on the neck. It’s also funny how you can call this movie The Rise of . . . when the entire film is lacking in any rising action.

First Look at Top Cow’s Upcoming ‘Tracker’ Comic

TKFL_SDCC09.inddOur friends at Top Cow have given us a sneak peek at their upcoming Traker comic and because we care about what you read, we’re bringing it to you right here. This new title is the first offered from Top Cow’s partnership with Heroes & Villains Entertainment.

The comic, written by Johathan Lincoln with art by Francis Tsai, let’s you “Enter a world of werewolves and serial killers unlike anything you’ve seen before” according to the company. This preview was only previously available if you went to Comic-Con in San Diego and from what we can see here, it looks pretty cool indeed.

Besides, who doesn’t love werewolves and serial killers? I know we do. That’s not a combo you see very often in the pages of comics. Although, we do like Tim Seeley’s Hack/Slash which often has serial killers and monsters of a sort. If this one is anything close to that, we’re gonna like it too.

Check out the larger preview pages after the jump. Tracker hits comic store shelves in November for $2.99.

John Hughes Tribute Montage

tbcUsually, I shy away from these types of tribute videos. They normally can’t do the person in question justice or often minimize their contributions in some way. Or, they are just plain bad and poorly put together. Fortunately, that’s not the case with this particular video.

In this one, YouTube user cpfilm has put together a great set of clips from most of John Hughes’s top films of the ’80’s, set to The Who’s song Baba O’Riley which, of course, includes the very appropriate “teenage wasteland” lyrics. Among the films represented are most of the ones I found inspirational and highly amusing as a teenager growing up in the 80’s including The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Sixteen Candles.

This video took a great deal of time and effort and I, for one, appreciate what went into it and the feelings it evokes. You can say whatever you want about John Hughes and his post-80’s career, but in his prime, he made some of the most entertaining, influential and eminently quotable films of all time. For that, and much more, I raise my fist silently in the air. RIP Mr. Hughes and thanks for all the great memories.

Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ Gets Huge Cast

machete-poster-795630It’s interesting how much money is made that stemmed from jokes. 2006’s Snakes on a Plane generated $62 million dollars in the theater, not to mention merchandising and DVD sales, and the film all started with spoofed Photoshop image. It looks like the next Snakes will be Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, starring his cousin Danny Trejo.

The film started off as a mock trailer (which you can check out after the jump) for Rodriguez and Tarantino’s Grindhouse film back in 2007. There was talk about doing an entire film of spoof trailers, among many other pipe dreams. Rodriguez then mentioned that he wanted to turn the 2-minute trailer into a feature-length film, and here we are.

News just came in yesterday that the film has gotten it’s cast, and it looks to be pretty impressive, given that the film all started with a joke. Now signed on to do next year’s Machete alongside star Danny Trejo is Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Jonah Hill, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey.

This almost seems like a joke itself, pulling in names like De Niro, Seagal, and Lohan in the same picture, but the story seems to be legit. Some of those name’s aren’t foreign to a Rodriguez pictures but Nash Bridges? The Lawnmower Man? Jonah Hill??

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Game Coming Next Year

scott-pilgrimWho would’ve thought that a game starring Michael Cera, Kieren Culkin, and Jason Schwartzman would get optioned as a video game by UbiSoft, the developer who’s titles include Assassin’s Creed and Call of Juarez? Apparently Universal did, as they’re already planning a game to coincide with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World‘s theatrical release in 2010.

Universal’s live action film is based on a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and has won several awards including a Harvey Award, Wizard’s Indie Book of the Year, and Entertainment Weekly’s Independent Comic of the Year. In the film, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has just met the girl of his dreams (Live Free or Die Hard’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) only to find out that her seven evil ex boyfriends are coming to kill him.

According to the Bill Kispert, Vice President, Interactive, Universal Partnership and Licensing, they are all excited for the film and gameL

“We were hooked on Scott Pilgrim from our first read of the comics and script. The storyline mirrors the escalating structure of a video game, and it is filled with clever homage to video game culture. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft to bring fans a thoroughly entertaining interactive experience.”
