New Costumes Coming to ‘Marvel vs. Capcom 3′

Way back in November, Capcom already announced the first batch of DLC coming for Marvel vs. Capcom 3Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath would be on their way to the roster. Last week, coinciding with the game’s actual release, Capcom announced another set of DLC. This time, much in the vein of Super Street Fighter IV, it is new costumes. Now we know what you are thinking. Why would you care about a different colored pair of jeans on Haggar or an alternate paint job on the Sentinel. Well there we would agree with you.

But this isn’t just any set of alternate costumes. Six characters will receive new attire. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Chris, Ryu and Dante. Instead of just being fresh coats of paint on existing templates, these are entirely new costumes being added to the game.

Captain America will be given what Marvel fans have affectionately coined the Captain Steve outfit. As the world’s new top cop, Steve Rogers Super Soldier doesn’t hide behind the mask anymore. Instead he has a more modern costume. Interestingly enough, Capcom chose to give him the classic Cap shield though instead of his current comic weapon, a light disk shield.

Thor is going retro with the classic look. Mirrored after his original set of duds, Thor comes to Marvel vs. Capcom 3 this time in all his 1960’s glory.

Iron Man’s new costume isn’t even Iron Man at all, but instead the Iron Patriot. After taking credit for saving the world by killing the Skrull Queen in the Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) was put in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D., renaming it H.A.M.M.E.R., and given the opportunity to lead his own team of Avengers. Taking the iconic colors of Captain America and combining them with a suit of Tony Stark’s design, Norman remade himself as the Iron Patriot, the leader of his dark Avengers, which he would remain until his downfall during the failed siege of Asgard.

Chris Redfield takes a page from Thor’s book by returning to his original uniform from Resident Evil. Back in his S.T.A.R.S. uniform, Chris took on the scariest baddies the PlayStation had seen and helped launch the now classic franchise to its current success.

Dante takes a step back to Devil May Cry 3 where he takes on his demonic father’s human form. This is another great nod of the hat to players who have appreciated past Capcom titles.

And speaking of great nods, Ryu’s alternate costume is the biggest “OMG, I remember that” tip off for classic arcade gamers. Ryu goes back to his first ever costume. No, not the Street Fighter II gear that most people remember. This one is for the true SF aficionados. This costume comes from the original 1987 Street Fighter arcade machine, back when Ryu’s hair was bright red and so were the little booties he wore on his feet.
