First Poster for ‘9’ Hits the ‘Net

9-final-poster-small Over at one of our favorite other sites, Film School Rejects, they’ve got the first poster for the film 9 in all its glowy goodness. The film, directed by newcomer Shane Acker is presented to the world by producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, with whom he shares top billing on the poster. Plus, they’ve put the writer’s name prominently on the poster which, as a writer myself, I think is pretty cool.

9 features the voices of Ellijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly and Christopher Plummer as the rag-tag band of living, fighting toys who take up arms after the world of humans is destroyed. Another cool thing about this movies, besides the poster, is that you can receive updates before the revolution begins from their scientist creator by being his friend on Facebook.

9 hits theaters on, um, September 9th. Convenient. Oh, and nice job marketing and publicity people. Way to pull it together.

More ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Season 2 Set Pics

sons_of_anarchy_poster1 You may recall that recently I brought you the first pics from the set taken by Sons of Anarchy creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter. Those pics were taken by him during production of the show’s second season, which got underway last month. Now, Sutter is at it again and has posted even more behind the scenes shots over at his personal blog.

This time Sutter has shared quite a few more pictures than last time and has also gone to the trouble to display them in an artistic collage depicting all sorts of scenes from the production. We’re also treated to even more glimpses of many of my favorite characters from the show including Charlie Hunnam as Jax, Ron Perlman as Clay, Tommy Flannigan as Chibs, Mark Boone Junior as Bobby and William Lucking as Piney. Sadly, no pics of the talented Katey Sagal this time, only her empty chair.

There’s also some shots taken during a night shoot as well as several of the sets, motorcycles, director’s chairs and many other things that help to give you an idea of the “look and feel” of a television series during production. As as I don’t spend much time on set anymore doing production, seeing these photos kinda makes me miss those days a little. . . but only a little. Those eighteen hour days were a bitch.

Although, it would be cool to have one of those Sons of Anarchy D-Chair backs for my own chair currently sitting in the garage backless. Maybe someday. Season 2 of Sons of Anarchy comes to the FX network in September.

First Impression: Activision’s ‘Prototype’ Shows It’s Good to Be Bad

Please note this is a review of a M rated game. It is violent, bloody, contains harsh language and is not intended for children by any means. If you’re okay with that, read on.

After playing the first two hours of Prototype on the XBox 360 (also available on the Playstation 3), one thing becomes very apparent. Though you have the option to walk through the game in a stealthy manner with minimal collateral damage, that play method is far from encouraged. Why? Because Prototype makes it way too fun to be the bad guy.

Told in a story similar in style to Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Prototype starts out with the player taking the role of Alex Mercer as New York City has been taken over by a group of monstrous life forms. As Alex fights his way through these creatures, he is also attacked by the military. Using his superpowers of super strength. Carnage-like claws and transforming tendrils that extend from his body, Alex begins an inner monologue where he explains how what has happened to the city is somehow his fault. Flashback to 18 days prior where NYC hasn’t fallen in to complete bedlam yet and Alex is just discovering his powers.

While being given specific target locations and characters he must encounter, there is no real penalty (other than the damage left on your soul) for just being a ruthless, uncaring killer. Even the game’s method of health regeneration encourages the murder of innocents. One of Alex’s ability is to grab and “absorb” a person near him to regain health. These absorptions come in the form of brutal Mortal Kombat style fatalities. Even the game’s XBox 360 Achievements lend themselves to the most brutal style possible such as “Endless Hunger” which awards the player for absorbing 200 victims and “The Butcher” which is given to a player able to kill 50 people in 5 seconds.

Megan Fox is the New ‘Buffy’?

First, we brought you news of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie in the works with original producer and director Kaz Kazui and Fran Rubel Kazui but without the participation of Joss Whedon. Now comes word, and keep in mind this info sits deep in the heart of rumor country, that Megan Fox is being considered for the role of Buffy in the new film.

Don’t misunderstand, we like Megan Fox here at The Flickcast. In fact, we may have mentioned her once or twice during a podcast or on the site. Still, with her recent opinions concerning her role as Wonder Woman, another strong female warrior, we’re not sure if she would even be interested in playing Buffy — a role made famous by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

That said, the possibility is an interesting one. Obviously, she has many of the physical attibutes necessary for the role, but we’ve never seen her do much fighting or martial arts. However, those things can be tought — at least well enough to make them look plausable on screen. So, the question really comes down to, as it often does, her acting ability. As in, can she convincingly pull off the role? Maybe.

But until we know for sure if this is something more than just a rumor, there’s really no point in speculating further. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as it develops.

The Flickcast – Episode 11: Beyond Cyberspace

iphone-3g-s Last time on The Flickcast, your favorite trio discussed all kinds of interesting topics including the Twilight phenomenon, the MTV Movie Awards, the Megan Fox as Wonder Woman “controversy”, who we think should star in a Wonder Woman movie and that Matt, for some reason, doesn’t seem to like Jessica Biel or Hallle Berry.

This week the team discusses and debates a slew of new topics including Monday’s Apple announcements from the World Wide Developer Conference including cool, new iPhones and an update to OS X, what was cool and worth a look from the recent E3 gaming convention, the success and greatness that is The Hangover, Kirsten Dunst joining Spider-Man 4, the merits of movies in 3D and a whole lot more.

Chris, Matt and Christina also made some picks this week including one of Christina’s favorite reality shows Bridezillas, Matt’s pick of one of his favorite reality shows, Star-Ving featuring David Faustino of Married with Children, and Chris’ pick of Rob Zombie’s reboot of Halloween — which, believe it or not, he really liked.

Its a big episode, but one you won’t want to miss.

Comedy Central Resurrects ‘Futurama’

It’s official: Comedy Central has picked up the rights to renew 20th Century Fox Television’s Futurama for 26 new episodes, six years after getting initially cancelled by the Fox network. In a recent EW interview with a 20th Century Fox spokesman, they say the DVD sales and reruns have had a “blockbuster” performance:

“When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing — that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived,” 20th Century Fox TV Co-Chairman Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. “But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell.”

Both creators David X Cohen and Matt Groening were of course ecstatic about the news. Said Groening: “We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000.”

Between this mistake and the mistake of canceling Family Guy, maybe this means Fox TV will think twice about axing an animated series, or even a live action series (Could we see the resurrection of Greg the Bunny?). You can currently catch reruns of Futurama on Comedy Central throughout the week and you can even pre-order the complete box set inside of a limited Bender head from Amazon today!

First Pic of Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in ‘Iron Man 2’ Hits the ‘Net

The very first image of actor Mickey Rourke decked out on the set of Iron Man 2 as the villain Whiplash has just hit the web thanks to Advanced Iron. There was rumors for quite some time about who Rourke will actually be portraying in the sequel, from Crymson Dynamo to Titanium Man, but it looks like the character will be a mashup of both the Russain Dynamo and another Iron Man baddie in Whiplash.

Seeing as how Rourke looks more like somebody’s grandpa after they they took apart the microwave, we’re all curious to see how this fits in with the Marvel film universe. Click on the image to see the full sized version.

There are more rumors that this sequel will utilize the multiple villains formula, as Sam Rockwell will be portraying Justin Hammer, the business rival of Robert Downy Jr.’s Tony Stark. No word on where Rourke fits in here, but as we inch closer to the release date and this years Comic Con, expect more photos and details to be released.

Back to the Beginning for ‘The Darkness’

the-darkness-origins Who is Jackie Estacado? What is The Darkness? What powers does it have? How is it connected to Jackie? All of these are questions for anyone who might find themselves picking up The Darkness Volume 2 #78 on comic store shelves later this month. With thirteen years of history to the character, one of the most intimidating things for a new reader is to dive into an established series for the first time. Unlike such iconic characters as Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, The Darkness hasn’t reached a level that everyone, comic fan or not, knows the character’s origin, or even the most important facets of it. But Top Cow is doing something to remedy this problem.

Later this month, Top Cow Productions is publishing The Darkness Origins Volume 1. The first rare six issues of the first volume of this series will be reprinted and packaged together allowing readers to relive the beginning of The Darkness. According to Top Cow’s official info on the book:

“The Darkness Origins Volume 1 tells the story of how mafia hitman Jackie Estacado was blessed and cursed on his 21st birthday when he inherited the power of The Darkness. Readers will learn how the elemental force of The Darkness gives Estacado access to an otherworldly dimension and control over the demons who dwell there. This volume collects the origin of Estacado as the current bearer of The Darkness, and introduces classic characters such as the Angelus, Butcher, and Sonatine.”
