Tech: Google to Buy Waze Social Traffic Service

waze-screens-1

Even though Google is pretty much the king of maps and traffic avoidance these days, it would seem the company wants to do it even better. So, with that in mind, today Google announced they are buying Waze, the GPS social traffic app that updates routes and drive information in real-time as users post updates.

The app has voice navigation, shows community-contributed road alerts, learns from your frequently traveled routes, and can even find the cheapest gas station near you, all based on community interaction with other users. With over 10 million downloads via the Google Play store and at least as many in iTunes, Waze has quite a large user base. With this, Google is hoping to further improve the ability for its Maps app to help drivers avoid those pesky long commute times.

According to the company, they are “excited” about the prospect of “enhancing Google Maps with some of the traffic update features” already used by Waze. They are hoping to “outsmart traffic together.”

Let’s hope they can. We, like everyone else in the world, hates traffic.

E3 2013: PlayStation 4 Accused of 1st Degree Murder of XBox One

PlayStation Sharing

Looking back at the events of the previous day, I believe two things happened. First, Microsoft went in with the plan of throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best. Second, Sony had two conferences ready to roll out. And here is why.

After letting details out before E3 about what the XBox One would do to handle used games and DRM, Microsoft went out hoping their exclusives for the system like Dead Rising 3, Halo 5 and Killer Instinct would be enough to turn the tide on their perception and then announced the $499 price point. And then Sony went…

During a keynote presentation Monday morning in San Francisco, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to bring a whole host of new and shiny Apple stuff to a massive crowd of cheering fans/developers. Since this was a developer conference, the most important thing was, of course, the announcement of the next gen of iOS called iOS 7.

But that wasn’t all. Also announced was an update to Mac OS X called Mavericks, Apple’s new streaming service called iTunes Radio and  new hardware including revamped MacBook Air laptops as well as a completely reimagined Mac Pro.

Here’s a list of all the announcements:

• New version of Mac OS X called Mavericks. That’s right, no more cat names. Now, cool surf spots in California instead.

• New version of iOS called iOS 7. No cute nickname but lots of innovative features and a new, fancy UI design.

• Updated MacBook Air laptops. Longer battery life and better WiFi speed with 802.11AC

• Completely reimagined Mac Pro desktop. For those who need to do some heavy lifting. It looks like a round version of the tower in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

With several successful shows under its virtual belt, including Spartacus: War of the Dammed, Magic City and Da Vinci’s Demons, Starz has become another great destination for new, original content. They’ve got a new show coming soon, called The White Queen, that hopes to add to their already excellent reputation.

We’ve got a trailer for the new show to share with you today. But first, here’s some info about the show from the official press release:

In the STARZ original drama, the year is 1464, before the Tudor dynasty ruled England, and war has been ravaging throughout the country over who is the rightful king. It is a blood feud between two sides of the same family; The House of York and The House of Lancaster. The House of York’s young heir Edward IV is crowned King of England with the help of his mentor and advisor, the master manipulator Lord Warwick, known at court as “The Kingmaker.”

When Edward falls in love with a beautiful Lancastrian commoner, Elizabeth Woodville, Warwick’s plan to control the throne comes crashing down. A violent, high-stakes struggle for the crown ensues between Elizabeth, her fiercest adversary, Lancastrian Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville, a pawn in her father’s power game.

E3 2013: Predictions

E32013 Cover Image

In just a few short hours, the E3 conferences begin and as we’ve all seen these can be the biggest moments of the expo and often influence the nature of the industry for the coming year and even further. In the past, these conferences have also made significant impact on who lost in the coming year as a lack of hype for certain companies made others look even greater by comparison.

The one given for this E3 above all else is that Nintendo doesn’t have anything big to reveal. While they will probably be making announcements from the show floor and through Nintendo Direct and shoving off various new games, potentially including new details on the upcoming Wii U Smash Brothers, they actually are not going to have a Nintendo Press Conference. After two years of lackluster results pushing the Wii U to the mainstream media through E3 press, Nintendo is backing off hopefully to reevaluate where the console stands in the market and figure out a way to focus back on their core audience they lost with the Wii.
