These Saul Bass Poster Designs for Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ Are Cool

Among the many things we love around here is great design. And one of the greatest designers of all time is the legendary Saul Bass. His work on countless movie posters and title sequences, often with his wife Elaine, are among the best examples of modern design out there.

Another group of people who appreciate great design are the folks over at The Fox Is Black. They’ve collected some great examples of Bass’ work on posters for Kubrick’s The Shining and the collection goes a long way to show the level of craft and dedication that went into the making of this iconic piece of cinema history.

Check out a few other examples after the break. For much more, head over here.

Kickstarter Watch: ‘Kaiju Combat’

20121213-121512.jpg

One of the great things about Kickstarter is the plethora of ideas and wide variety of games that get pitched to the internet. It is also one of its greatest weaknesses as so many great ideas are out there that unless something stands so high above the crowd, it still might not get fully funded. One game that is standing and we would love the chance to see and review in the near future is Kaiju Combat.

Remember War of the Monsters back in the SEGA Genesis era? Think of this game as an updated version that also has ties in to major kaiju characters. Don’t know what Kaiju means? Kaiju is the Japanese word that roughly translates to “strange monster”. The best known Kaiju is obviously Godzilla. Other Kaiju include Gamora, Mothra and even American creations like King Kong or the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man.

Nuketown 2025 Zombie Map Comes to ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ Today

Already got your fill of everything in Call of Duty: Black Ops II in the month that it has been out? Well, your bullet hungry prayers have been answered with the first piece of content coming out today for Call of Duty: Black Ops II Season Pass owners. For the discounted price of $49.99, Season Pass holders will get four DLC Map packs as well as the Nuketown 2025 Zombie map which goes live today on XBox 360.

The Nuketown 2025 Zombie map doesn’t just throw players into the bright, 50’s retro stylized suburbia that players have already experienced in Call of Duty multiplayer. Instead, they see the post apocalyptic version of the map. While the basic floor plan has stayed the same, the buildings are in ruins giving zombies tons of access points to the players. In addition, the burnt out mannequins are just creepy as hell.

AMC’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ To Get a Third Season After All

20121212-123235.jpg

While westerns may not be as popular as they once were, some of us around these parts still love them. Yes Chris Ullrich, I’m looking at you.

So today’s news that the AMC series Hell On Wheels is actually getting a third season should make Western fans like our Editor-in-Chief very happy. That’s right, the series, which had previously been given a third season but had said renewal delayed due to the departure of show runner John Shiban (who had been expected to take over the show for the third season after the departure of creators Joe and Tony Gayton) is back on track.

Now that AMC has found a newshow runner, in the persona of John Wirth (late of ABC’s The Cape) the show has the green light again for a third season of ten episodes.

“As we gear up for season three of Hell On Wheels we are pleased to have such an accomplished showrunner as John Wirth join our team,” said Susie Fitzgerald, AMC’s SVP of scripted development and current programming. “With the help of our partners at Entertainment One, Endemol and Nomadic, we look forward to a new season of the poetic and pulpy adventures of Cullen Bohannan and the other characters as they build the railroad across the US.”

Now if they can just find a way to bring back Lily. That would make the boss even happier.

Latest ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer Brings the Action

Yes, the first G.I. Joe was pretty to look at, but dumb. Much like its star. Of course, even if it was not everything it could have been, the gang at Paramount must be an optimistic bunch and so, there’s a sequel on the way.

This time the movie is called G.I. Joe: Retaliation and it stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis and Jonathan Pryce in a story featuring COBRA’s infiltration of the U.S. Government and the Joes saving the day.

It’s directed by John M. Chu and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Those are some pretty accomplished people, maybe this won’t be as bad as we think? Maybe.

At any rate, there’s a new trailer for the movie for you to check out. Look for the movie itself to arrive on March 29, 2013.

Check out the trailer after the break.

Help Child’s Play Save a Child’s Christmas

During the first year of The Flickcast, we urged our readers to head to Child’s Play to help make the holidays brighter for kids who were stuck in the hospital over the holidays. Back in 2009, the guys at Penny Arcade had set a goal of $1,000,000, which they were able to achieve.

Now, we are asking again for our loyal readership to help out those going through the terrible ordeal of spending their holidays in a hospital instead of being at home with their loved ones. With the economy being in worse shape than three years ago, Child’s Play has set an even higher goal for themselves of $2,500,000, which has been topped already with still almost two weeks until Christmas.

But that doesn’t mean we should stop giving. There are still lots of children who could use a bit of Christmas cheer that having new games to play and DVDs to watch can bring.
