The Flickcast – Page 180 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

Movie Review: ‘Cloud Atlas’

Well, if the Wachowski Siblings ever wash out of the movies, they can always turn to knitwear. Their inimitable line of deconstructed post-Apocalyptic Steampunk sweaters, wraps and bodysuits made a big impression in its debut—1999’s The Matrix—and continues strong in their brand new Cloud Atlas collection. Fans will find the irregularly rustic stitches, bold asymmetry, and moody hand-dyed Neo-Gothic palette they love, cast in intriguing new shapes. Tom Hanks’ hooded cape and Susan Sarandon’s stone- and macrame-ornamented dress with matching fingerless wristlets are particularly arresting.

Which is to say that Art Direction is as important in the epic, sweeping, wildly ambitious Cloud Atlas as it has always been in the Wachowski oeuvre, as obsessively thorough and as effectively world-making. The movie is based on a 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell, a book so bulky and complex it took several years for the movie’s three directors—the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer of Run Lola Run—to work out the script and logistics.

Matthew Vaughn Has Left The Directors Chair Of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, What Does That Mean For Marvel’s Merry Mutants?

Matthew Vaughn is a frustratingly great director. He is great in regards to his four feature films all being excellent, and he is frustrating because the man seems to take great pleasure in agreeing to do awesome projects and slipping away from them so close to production.

For those of you who don’t remember, Vaughn was the original choice to direct X-Men: The Last Stand after Bryan Singer jumped ship to his Superman snore-fest. Everything seemed great in the X-Universe until, at the last-minute, Vaughn dropped out and Fox was forced to call in Brett Ratner who has a history of bringing in projects on time and on budget. Now X3 had an extremely mixed reaction (I actually loved it, ask me to defend it to a hater some time for raucous debate) but one thing is certain, the film suffered from Vaughn’s departure.

Fast forward a handful of years and Vaughn finally made his X-Film and it ended up being the best of the franchise and single-handedly saved the struggling mutants from an impending cinematic reboot fate. Now we stand at the precipice of another X-Film production with Vaughn at the helm and, wouldn’t you know it, the man bows out.

First ‘A Good Day to Die Hard Trailer’ Is Here

We like this. So should you. Bruce Willis is back at it again as everyone’s favorite anti-hero John McClane in the latest installment A Good Day to Die Hard. This time around he fights with the Russians and blows a lot of stuf up.

Plus, he’s accompanied by his son and even his daughter makes an appearance. Now if they could just get Holly back for this it might be really fun. Although, Bonnie Bedelia hasn’t aged quite as well as Willis so that might be an issue for some. Still, it would be fun to see her come back. All in the family and all that.

Anyway, here’s the trailer. Look for A Good Day to Die Hard to hit theaters on February 14, 2013. Yes, Valentine’s Day.

The Flickcast Five: Scariest Moments in Gaming

With Halloween fast approaching, it is time to look back at some of the scariest moments in gaming. The horror genre of gaming extends from platformers and puzzlers to FPS and even point and click adventure games. Now while the delivery of the scary moments listed below all differ, every one below has given us an “Oh s*%t” reaction. Some were instant scares while others were reactions that took some time to really hit home. But be warned, there will be spoilers ahead.

Doom 3 – Mirror Scare

While Doom and its successor Doom II took players through the gates of hell, they weren’t exactly scary games. There were some moments when an attack would come from a newly opened door that players were not expecting but it wasn’t until Doom 3 that the series had its first horrifying moment. With updated graphics and sound, Doom 3 was able to explore atmosphere in a way its predecessors never could. With a new lighting engine, shadows played a huge part in the game and players had to choose between holding a flashlight or a weapon, making the game incredibly tense.

As a result, when players find a well lit bathroom early on in the game they don’t expect the glimpse of hell that quickly pops up on screen when they face the mirror. Music crashes, flames burn around the player and then almost instantly everything goes back to normal. From then on, no place in the game feels safe. Between the poorly lit corridors seen only through a flashlight’s bulb or the uneasy tension from walking into a bright open room, everywhere a player goes now feels like evil is lurking around the corner.

‘Anarchy Reigns’ Gets a VERY Early 2013 Release Date for North America

Way back in 2011, The Flickcast was covering Anarchy Reigns from SEGA and Platinum games pretty heavily but at the start of 2012 news about the game started creeping to a standstill. Though it was released in July of this year in Japan, there was a placeholder March 2013 release date for the game. Now, SEGA has confirmed that Anarchy Reigns will be coming to the states on January 4th, 2013. With that, they also confirmed that Anarchy Reigns will be coming to both the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the value minded price point of $29.99.

For those that haven’t been following it, Anarchy Reigns is an online multiplayer focused beat ’em up which features some of the cast of the Nintendo Wii’s MadWorld as well as some new characters as well. You can find some of the vignettes for the characters we have highlighted on the Flickcast here.

First TV Spot for ‘The Hobbit’ Arrives

Even though we’re still not quite sure why The Hobbit has to be three movies (unless you consider good, old fashioned greed), we’re still pretty excited about seeing it (or them). Yes, we may have mentioned our reservations before once or twice, so?

Anyway, after some other bits and pieces, the first TV sport for part one has hit the airwaves. Check it out below.
