Indie Spotlight: ‘Patient Zero’

With all the big budget Hollywood movies coming out each week it’s also nice to pay a bit of attention to the little guy (or girl). Indie filmmakers of today often do it with talent, style and innovation. Plus, they are potentially tomorrow’s big budget directors.

Just look at someone like Gareth Edwards. He made a little indie movie called Monsters and now he’s directing the big budget studio reboot of Godzilla. See, it can happen.

This time around we turn the Indie Spotlight on Brian T. Jaynes Patient Zero. The zombie apocalypse horror movie has it’s world premiere next week at Splatterfest. Until then, here’s a bit of synopsis to help pique your interest.

The highly anticipated prequel to director Brian T. Jaynes hit feature, “Humans Vs. Zombies” shows the genesis of “the beginning of the end,” and how genetic experimentation lead to the creation of Patient Zero, the first infectious zombie.

Check out the trailer for Patient Zero after the break. If you can’t make the screening in Huston, don’t worry. The movie hits DVD, etc. on September 25th.

‘Resident Evil 6’ Trailer Revealed at Tokyo Game Show

Who do you turn to when there is no hope left? Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy and Jake Muller obviously. Or at least that’s what the latest trailer from Capcom out of last week’s Tokyo Game Show for Resident Evil 6 leads us to believe. If you don’t believe us, take a look at the full trailer after the jump.

But what makes this trailer special? Well for long time Resident Evil fans, the TGS Resident Evil 6 trailer has hordes of story hints, some largely important and others subtle. It also contains a brief cut scene of all three main characters crossing paths as well.

For those new to the Resident Evil series, there are glimpses are some of the newest machinations of the twisted staff at Capcom in action during the course of Resident Evil 6. The virus that transforms people into inside out scorpion monsters or the ball that explodes into a spray of needs that make people’s skin melt off are two personal favorites.

Building Worlds in ‘LEGO The Lord of the Rings’ Developer Diary

One of the most intimidating prospects for a game developer may be the chance to work on a franchise they grew up loving. There is so much pressure put on themselves to uphold the high standards they set because they don’t want to let down themselves, other fans or the creators of it. But it also gives great opportunity for talented teams to make something special that can stand alongside other creative works associated with that franchise. Traveler’s Tales is one of those teams that has shown both love and respect for everything from Star Wars to Harry Potter in the LEGO universe and are undertaking the formidable legacy of The Lord of the Rings in their next game.

When you look at LEGO The Lord of the Rings at first, what you may notice first is the world going on behind the characters. There is a blend of both picturesque landscape combined with scenics from the films created out of LEGO. Much like they did with LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, LEGO The Lord of the Rings will have a large open world format with side quests for players to take part in instead of just following the story of the game.

New Trailer for ‘The Details’ With Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks Arrives

Not that long ago Tobey Maguire battled supervillians as the cinematic incarnation of Spider-Man. Now, he’s back. Only this time his opponets are raccoons in the new movie The Details. Yes, you read that right. Raccoons.

We’ve got a trailer for that movie for you today, along with a heaping side of synopsis.

After ten years of marriage, Jeff and Nealy Lang (Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks) have an idyllic suburban home… and a relationship on the skids. But, when a family of hungry raccoons ransacks their perfectly manicured backyard, Jeff becomes single-mindedly obsessed with eradicating the pests by any means necessary. Soon the relentless rodents aren’t merely uprooting the lawn, but also overturning the Langs’ entire bourgeois existence, as the man-versus-beast battle leads into an absurd mess of infidelity, extortion, organ donation and other assorted mayhem.

Check out said trailer after the break. Look for The Details on VOD October 5, 2012 and in theaters November 2, 2012.

DLC for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Lets Players Take on the Role of Rhino, the Lizard and Stan Lee

Activision announced today that The Amazing Spider-Man would be making its way today to the digital storefronts for XBox Live, the PlayStation Network and Steam for digital release. The XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be sold for $59.99, while the PC version will be going for $49.99. As much as we loved the game (check out our review here), at this point it may be smarter to bargain hunt as many stores have likely reduced the price on the boxed copies of the game.

What does excite us though more than the announcement of these games going to digital release (because let’s face it, every game that is worth anything does it eventually) is the announcement of four DLC packs for The Amazing Spiderman that go live today too. There are going to be four separate DLC packs going up today for roughly $3.00 each as well as a bundle of all four at a discounted $10.00 price.

Most exciting about these Packs (all detailed below) is that they aren’t just new missions for Spider-Man. They instead give new characters to play as in addition to new methods of gameplay. In the Rhino Challenge Pack, players will be running through Manhattan breaking everything in sight. The Oscorp Search & Destroy Pack allows players to play smart phone games resembling classic titles like Space Invaders.

Gina Carano to Star In Female ‘Expendables’

If we must have a female version of The Expendables, there’s no better female action star to topline such a film than Gina Carano. As she so capably proved in Haywaire, she kicks ass, takes names and looks great doing both.

So, knowing this, it should come as no surprise that Carano will indeed star in the upcoming Adi Shankar production, which Dutch Southern is currently writing. In fact, Shankar can’t imagine doing a female version of The Expendables without Carano.

Said the producer: “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of ‘The Expendables’ without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.”

Obviously, we feel Carano is an excellent choice too. Let’s hope Shankar’s other casting is as inspired. There’s a lot of 80s and 90s (and current) female action stars who are still alive and, well, kicking. We would be happy to put together a list Adi, just ask and it’s yours.

Ok, we won’t wait for you to ask. Here’s some names to consider: Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver, Uma Thurman, Michele Rodriguez, Carrie Anne Moss, Zoe Bell, Lucy Lawless, Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh.

What do you think of those names? Anyone we missed? Sound off in the comments.

Enterprising Hacker Gets iOS 5 Google Maps App Working On iOS 6

Whatever your experience with Apple’s new Maps application in iOS 6 (some people hate it, others are less critical) it is now part of the equation. If you update to iOS 6 or buy an iOS device with it already installed, you’ve just got to take the Apple Maps application and use it, right?

Well, maybe not. One enterprising iOS hacker by the name of Ryan Petrich has taken matters into his own hands and on Sunday posted a video that demonstrates the original Google Maps program from iOS 5 running on iOS 6.

Now before you get too excited the hack isn’t available to the public yet as, according to Petrich, it isn’t stable enough yet to do so. Also, and you should have seen this coming, you will have to jailbreak your iPhone running iOS 6 for this hack to work.

Still, if you just can’t get iMaps in iOS 6 to work for you and you’re willing to go through the steps necessary, relief for you may be in sight. That is until Apple closes this hole in the next iOS 6 updaate. Until then, go nuts!

Check out the video of this in action after the break.
