Epix And Amazon Join Forces As Exclusivity Deal With Netflix Runs Out

Netflix has had a rather rough year, and today’s news only adds a bit more salt into some open wounds. Just days after their exclusivity deal with up and coming premium movie channel Epix expires, one of their biggest competitors has signed on, greatly enhancing their instant library.

Deadline reports that Epix has just reached a deal with Amazon to provide their content through their Prime Instant Video service:

The arrangement more than doubles Amazon Prime Instant Video’s offerings, and knocks some of the wind out of its chief competitor: Netflix. The streaming video company’s shares were down about 10% shortly after the market opened this morning… “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The Avengers, Iron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox, iPad or any of the other of the Amazon Instant Video compatible devices,” says Amazon VP Bill Carr.

While it doesn’t appear that Netflix will be losing any of this content, it is certainly a blow to see Amazon now offer more and more first run, popular content on their streaming service. It is also said that now that Epix is free from the exclusivity contracts it had with Netflix it is looking at other services to partner with as well. A move that is a boon to the public, but just another body blow to the company that changed how we digest film.

The Official Name And Release Date Of The Newly Added Third ‘Hobbit’ Film

The Hobbit is now a trilogy, we all know that now and most of us have made our peace with that very surprising news. Where there were two films now there are three, and one of the more important and simple things a film needs when it is announced is a title and a release date. Few films are brazen enough to release with out a title and a release date, and it seems the third Hobbit will not be as well.

The third film will now be known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again, sharp readers will no doubt recognize that title as the one for the second Hobbit film. Seeing as how that title has some sense of finality to it, they shipped it over to the third film which means the second film will now need a new moniker, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smuag.

This new title was expected, but it does seem to confirm how Peter Jackson and company are splitting the known portion of the narrative. The second film will likely climax with the confrontation with the dragon Smaug and the third film will be the epic Battle of the Five Armies. It was always considered tricky how they would do both justice in one film, so there is a small since relief knowing that both rather large events will have time to breathe on-screen.

As for the release date, the third and final(?) Hobbit film will buck all trends and reason and release July 18th 2014. This allows a Peter Jackson middle earth film to test the Summer blockbuster waters for the first time ever.

Stay tuned to The Flickcast for any more Hobbit based news bits as the first film gets closer and closer.

Box Office Report: ‘The Possession’ Creeps Into First Place Of Another Slight Box Office Weekend

Typically the Labor Day weekend is not a huge boon for the box office. People seem to like to spend the pseudo last summer weekend outside at the beach or at a BBQ. So it really comes as no surprise that despite a few new films the weekly box office still sputtered to unimpressive numbers.

Leading the pack this weekend is the horror film The Possession, which was a cheaply made horror film that managed to pull in over $17 Million. The first place finish and the budget beating haul make this film an immediate success by just about any standards. It won’t light the world on fire like a Saw or Paranormal Activity, but it is a win all around for just about everyone involved.

Second place went to the Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy moonshiner film, Lawless. Despite the big names attached this film was never marketed very ambitiously and thus its $10 Million weekend is actually a pretty decent win all things considered. The film is rated R and even though it stars big name actors, it was never really being positioned as a big deal as a release.

Catch Up With the Ponds Before The Season Premiere Of ‘Doctor Who’ This Weekend

It will come as no surprise to those who read us with regularity that this is a very pro Doctor Who site. The big season seven premiere is this weekend and there is more than a little bit of who mania around these parts in anticipation. Thankfully the BBC has delivered unto us a little morsel in the last few hours of waiting.

All this week BBC has debuted a daily, short mini-episode online. Pond Life, as the mini-mini-series has been dubbed, is all about what the Ponds are up to in the five months leading up to the September 1st premiere. Each episode provides only the slightest of glimpses of our favorite characters doing what they do, but it is enough to make us excited about them all over again.

It is also important to note that today’s episode, which is the last of the bunch, actually seems to bring with it some rather important information about where our characters are at when the season begins. All told the roughly six minutes total of the five shorts provide a rather meaningful prologue to the next season, so anyone who is on the Who bandwagon really should check these out.

You can check out the first part of Pond Life after the jump, and be sure to head over to BBC’s YouTube channel for the rest of the series.

New Red Band Trailer For ‘Seven Psychopaths’ For Your Viewing Pleasure

If you are one of the people who have not been exposed to the splendor that is In Bruges you really ought to do yourself a favor and seek it out post-haste. It has an energy about it that is hard to describe, and until you have seen it you really wont get as excited about Seven Psychopaths as you should be.

Director Martin McDonagh as teamed once again with Collin Ferrell for his next feature, and while the standard trailer does show promise, it is the red band trailer that really cements this as a must see. For those of you new to this project, here is the synopsis:

Written and Directed by Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh , the comedy “Seven Psychopaths” follows a struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends (Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell) kidnap a gangster’s (Woody Harrelson) beloved Shih Tzu.

Everything about the film feels right, from the paring of Farrell with Walken & Rockwell, to Tom Waits with a fluffy white bunny rabbit. Seven Psychopaths just might be a worthwhile successor to one of the surprise best films of 2008.

First ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Poster Offers A Peek Inside Leatherface’s Wardrobe

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not your average horror franchise. The original film is a true original and was one of the forefathers of modern horror storytelling, and after that the series took a long and twisty road. So it seems appropriate that we end up at the natural extension of the franchise, Texas Chainsaw 3D.

This is a film that is coming out in a few months, yet up to this point in time we have not seem much promotion for it. That was until the new one-sheet popped up online today, and, in all honesty, the poster actually strikes a compelling tone.

The tag line, ‘Evil Wears Many Faces’ offers up an interesting thought, Leatherface would probably have multiple masks he has made out of his victims over the years. Perhaps the new film will dig deeper into what makes the lunatic tick, or it is a throw away concept and the film is really just going to be a pretty young girl in a sweaty, small top running away from her doom for 95 minutes. Yeah we are betting the latter too.

In any event the poster is harmless and much better than they typical teaser imagery associated with 3D sequels to a modern horror remake.

You can check out the full one-sheet after the jump.

Check Out These Movie Poster Inspired Banners For The First Five Episodes Of ‘Doctor Who’ Season 7

Doctor Who is almost back, and what better way to get you jazzed for the next batch of new episodes than with some rather impressive  promotional artwork. These theatrical one-sheet inspired banners highlight each of the first five new episodes of the upcoming season.

There is some pretty major stuff happening in this first set of shows which will be ushering in some change. What that change will be is common knowledge, but on the precipice of the new season we wont spoil it here, especially as these posters do a good job of alluding to what will happen without overtly telling you.

One thing that is really interesting is how Steven Moffat has approached this new season. He has said in the past that he was trying to make each episode stand a little more on its own like a little movie. This was the same creative directive that Bruce Timm used in the early seasons of Batman: The Animated Series and look how well that turned out.

The focus on making these episodes more like self-contained mini-movies within a larger, interconnected world might be one of the better moves Moffat has made. Every episode we have seen clips from looks stunning, and if these episodes can deliver on their promise we are all in for a little over a month of pure television awesomeness.

Take a look at all the new banners after the jump.
