Movie Review: ‘Cosmopolis’

There’s, to my mind, three ways in which the angriest of us can make an argument, and they’re usually limited to personality type. The first, and most admirable, is violence, which has three subcategories: 1) the promise of threats; 2) a swift uppercut to the opponent’s jaw or unmentionables; and 3) a swift uppercut to the opponent’s mother’s jaw or unmentionables.

The second is the ad hominem, or a frank and honest attack on the opponent’s personal failings, e.g. “Well, I may not be able to take the square root of a negative, but you have the face of an elephant”; and the third, and most reviled, is the obfuscation of language.

Cosmopolis is firmly planted in the third type, so firmly that I’m not even sure if it’s making an argument at all. The characters all have endless monologues laced with ballooned phrases and delivered with no sense of meaning or conviction. For example, early on the protagonist meets up with his wife, who informs him that, “You reek of sexual discharge.”

New Trailer for Brian De Palma’s ‘Passion’ Arrives

Let’s face it, director Brian De Palma hasn’t made a really good movie since Carlito’s Way. And no, Mission: Impossible doesn’t count. His movies are never boring or conventional, however, but he sorta seems to be unable to do consistently good work.

Fortunately, he keeps getting chances to prove he’s still got it. He’s got a new thriller coming out soon called Passion and the Toronto International Film Festival has today posted a trailer for it.

Passion stars Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace. It is also written by De Palma and based on the 2011 French movie Love Crime directed by Alain Corneau.

We’ll give you a couple guesses as to what the movie is about. Or, you can just watch the trailer. That works too.

Enjoy.

Facebook App for iPhone and iPad Gets Major Update

Until now, if you’ve ever used the Facebook app for the iPhone or iPad you know it pretty much sucks. Not to be negative or anything but it almost always loads very slowly, if at all, and crashes quite a lot.

Fortunately, it looks like Facebook has decided to do something about it and has announced it has completely rebuilt its iPhone and iPad app for a “faster and more enjoyable user experience.” According to the company: “Facebook 5.0 for iOS is twice as fast as the previous version when launching the app, scrolling through news feed and opening photos in feed.”

To be honest, it does seem to load faster and so far we haven’t experienced any crashes. It might have to do with the fact that the company finally decided to build the app using Apple’s native SDK instead of trying to make it just a skin over an HTML5 interface.

Put another way, Facebook seems to have made the app the “right” way this time instead of trying to half-ass it. We think that’s a good thing. Let us know if the app works better for you now too.

Magnet Takes On Don Coscarelli’s ‘John Dies at the End’

Before you read on, you should know we’re big fans of Don Coscarelli here at The Flickcast. If you’ve never seen his films like Bubba Ho-Tep or anything from his Phantasm series, you should really consider going out right now and finding them. Go ahead, we’ll wait.

Now that you have a better appreciation for Coscarelli’s brand of horror, you’re in for a treat. Turns out Magnet Releasing has picked up the rights to his latest horror opus called John Dies at the End. Described as a “phantasmagoric new sci-fi/horror film,” John Dies at the End stars Paul Giamatti, Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Doug Jones.

The film centers around Giamatti’s character and his investigation into a street drug known as Soy Sauce, which promises an out-of-body experience with each hit, causing users to drift across time and dimensions. Unfortunately, when some return, they are no longer human.

Check out more info from the official press release after the break. Look for John Dies at the End to hit VOD (and hopefully a few theaters) in December.

Sony Reportedly Going to Support 4K Resolution on new TVs and Playstation 4

Before I go any further I need to disclose that I’m not a fan of Sony or its products. However, I do currently own a PS3, which I use primarily to watch Blu-ray movies. For gaming, I’m pretty much on the XBox 360 or the iPad 3.

My distaste for Sony has been a long time coming through a series of sub-par products and culminating in a very expensive XBR TV that failed just after the warranty expired and would have cost almost as much to fix as to repair. My love for Sony died that day.

This new development, highlighted over at BGR, seems destined to do little, if anything to change my opinion. According to the site, Sony plans on releasing televisions with 4K resolution.

They also plan on having the PS 4 support 4K resolution. My reaction? Who cares? I can’t even get my local cable or satellite provider to send full 1080P content to my exceptionally awesome Panasonic plasma TV let alone have worry about 4K resolution programming. Good luck seeing that in the next few years.

There’s also very few games that take advantage of 1080P on the PS3 so again, I ask, why do we need 4K? I feel the same way about 3D. Nobody really needs that at home either. I expect 4K to go the way of other failed Sony products like Betamax, UMD and the MiniDisc.

Pass.

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Adds Another Handsome Face To Its Cast List

The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were not the only box office behemoths in the last year. The Hunger Games took the world by storm back in March raking in over $650 Million globally. That’s number that might seem quaint compared to Joss Whedon’s big budget nerd-gasem, but contextually it’s a massive hit on a surprising scale.

So all eyes are now on its sequel which is about to begin filming, and one of the major new characters has just be cast. Most people probably do not know the name Sam Claflin, but he has been in a few big budget blockbusters and now is primed to take the next step into wide-spread recognition, by taking on the role of Finnick Odair.

Claflin was a bit of an afterthought in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but he actually turned in an impressive performance in Snow White and the Huntsman, so much so that some people actually liked his character more than Hemsworth’s Huntsman. Now he has a chance to turn heads in a film that will no doubt be a cultural event when it is released.

Hopefully this casting is another in the long line of impressive casting decisions so far in the series, managing to get good actors not just pretty faces like another sparkly franchise that has been popular lately.

Keep an eye on The Flickcast for any new Hunger Games news bits as the anticipated sequel heads towards production.

Check This Out: The Red Band Trailer for ‘Lawless’ With Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and More

In director John Hillcoat’s Lawless, written by Nick Cave and based on Matt Bondurant’s The Wettest County In The World, Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke play brothers who, shall we say, skirt the law in order to bring thirsty citizens the adult beverages they really want. Also in the movie, Guy Pearce plays a lawman who wants to end the party and Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Noah Taylor and Dane DeHaan make up the rest of the cast.

Based ont his cast, and from what we’ve seen so far, Lawless looks pretty darn good — even though it does have the LaBeouf in it. Now there’s a new, R-rated trailer for the movie out today and we’ve got it for you.

Look for Lawless to hit theaters on August 29th. Check out the trailer after the break.
