New Red Band Trailer for ‘The Revenant’ Arrives

With all the big studio films that come out each month, we need to remind ourselves to keep an eye out for smaller, indie films that deserve attention. One of these is the upcoming horror/comedy The Revenant.

Winner of the Best Director and Audience Awards at last year’s Fantastic Fest, writer/director D. Kerry Prior stars David Anders (Alias and The Vampire Diaries) and Chris Wylde (The Ten). Here’s a bit on the story from the official sysnpsis:

This breakout horror comedy centers around a fallen soldier who somehow finds he has joined the ranks of the living dead. Bart Gregory (Anders) has just recently been laid to rest – so why is he still up and walking around? The only person Bart can turn to for answers is his best friend Joey (Wylde), and before long the two pals have surmised that blood is life. In order to survive, Bart requires a steady supply of it.

Convinced that no one will miss the drug dealers and killers who have transformed LA into a swirling cesspool of crime and vice, the two friends decide to do law enforcement a favor by cleaning up the streets while collecting the precious blood needed to keep poor Bart from withering away into dust!

Check out the red band trailer (and some bonus clips because we love you) after the break. Look for The Revenant via VOD and in select theaters on Friday the 24th.

The Upcoming Season Of ‘The Office’ Will Be Its Swan Song

While doing the promoting rounds for Season 9 of The Office, series mastermind Greg Daniels has been pretty open about the fate of the show. The upcoming season will be the last hurrah of the Dunder Mifflin staff we all know and love.

Daniels is also telling people to expect a more ‘arc-heavy’ season with several long-standing recurring ties finally being answered. Perhaps some of the more intriguing of those ties will be the ultimate reveal of who the documentary filmmakers are, and of course the final revelation of who the Stanton Strangler is.

At some point during the last season we will be introduced to Dwight’s extended family and the stars of the spin-off series, The Farm. Casting is underway now to film a back door pilot during the season that will lead to the show most likely premiering next fall in place of the departing Office.

People have expressed some issues with the show since the departure of Steve Carrell, but I honestly feel the show has maintained a really solid core of characters you can care about in interesting situations. That said, the show has always had a good track record of bringing back former cast members for important stories, so hopefully we can see Michael Scott return and make everyone happy one more time.

Stay tuned to The Flickcast for any more Fall TV news as the new seasons fast approach.

What They Need to Do to Make ‘Deadpool’ Work on the Big Screen

Since the abomination that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, word has been that a Deadpool movie would be on its way. Since Wade Wilson’s appearance at the beginning of the movie was pretty much the only salvageable part of the film (and we can all just pretend that everything at the end didn’t happen), it does make sense to bring Ryan Reynolds back to take on the role. In current Marvel continuity, Deadpool has lost his healing factor which means the scars that cover his face are gone and he can appear as a normal person.

This is a huge asset to any film with a known actor taking on the headline role as it gives legitimacy to him being seen without the full costume on at all times. Frankly, no one was really looking forward to seeing the fully scared up Deadpool face on screen when the mask came off anyway. But in some ways the actor portraying Deadpool is low on the list of concerns in regard to what is needed to make this character actually work for a full feature length film.

One of the most challenging aspects of Deadpool is going to be his inner dialogue that goes on between Wade and the two insane voices in his head. One reason it works so well in comics is the visual cue. Deadpool has his own distinctive speech bubble and each of the two voices has their own design to their respective caption box as well. Even when ‘Pool is talking under a mask, it is easily identifiable which of the three is talking. The problem that appears in a movie is that when the film is in motion and Deadpool is talking under a mask, it is going to be a challenge to identify three different voices on screen.

Check This Out: ‘The Avengers’ Gag Reel

You’ve seen The Avengers, right? That very cool movie directed by Joss Whedon featuring Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and a whole lot more?

It was pretty great and made a ton of money. Naturally, when your making a huge movie like The Avengers everything doesn’t always go exactly as planned. One (or more) of those things that don’t always go exactly as planed are the performances by the actors.

In short, they occassionaly mess up their lines, or have more problems. Fortunately, the cameras are usually running during these times, which leads us to the new Avengers gag reel. It’s included on the movie’s DVD and Blu-ray release, but is also popping up around the Internets too.

Of course, we’ve got it for you after the break. Pretty funny stuff. Check it out.

This new development calls for some previews and previews we have! In fact, for all three shows. Check them all out after the break.

Alphas kicks things off Mondays at 8/7C followed by Warehouse 13. Lost Girl airs Fridays at 9/8C.

Apple Now Most Valuable Public Company In History

That’s right Apple haters, the company is now the most valuable public company in history. It’s combined value of all shares has now exceeded the previous record holder Microsoft.

At close of business in NYC, Apple’s shares closed at $665.15. This closing price pushed its market value to $623.52 billion, surpassing the $616.34 billion set by Microsoft on Dec. 27, 1999. Yes, that’s a lot of money.

Of course, much of this is due to the inevitable launch of the iPhone 5, reportedly set to drop in September. It also has a lot to do with the rumors of a smaller iPad as well as Apple’s potential entry into the TV business with either an actual TV or new set top box.

This is another in a serious of interesting developments for Apple, a company that was basically dismissed and assumed out of business not that long ago. What a difference time exceptional leadership and innovative, amazing products makes.

Just one of the many contributions by the late genius Steve Jobs. As a fan of Apple and it’s products we hope this never changes.

Box Office Report: ‘Expendables 2’ Comes Out On Top Of A Weak Weekend

Last week I said this was not going to be a big weekend, even with three new films nothing really had good Box Office potential. Even though the final tallies proved that this was indeed a lack luster weekend no film actually had a horrible haul.

The ‘big’ winner of the weekend was The Expendables 2, the sequel to the action extravaganza that dared to load as many action superstars as possible into about an hour and a half ‘splosion. The sequel was probably originally expected to do bigger business than it’s predecessor with its bigger cast and PG-13 rating.

Somewhere along the way expectations tempered and the film’s $28.7 Million take is probably close enough to expectations. Even though it is near expectations, it was still on the lower end, so at this point word of mouth has to be the saving grace for this testosterone fueled franchise.

Second place went to The Bourne Legacy which brought in just over $17 Million. Its drop was on par with the previous films in the franchise, but because the first weekend was weaker the film still lags. That said for a pretty big overhaul, the film has performed pretty well, and there is clearly life left in this series.

Scrapping into third place is the stop motion animated film ParaNorman. The supernatural animated picture hit the stop motion animated glass ceiling with a decent $14 Million which is not great, but hardly bad either. It is nice that the film is playing to some business, but it would have been nice to see the film breakout a little more.

Next weekend sees yet another ‘meh’ weekend at the Box Office, in fact we are starting to see the beginning of the end of summer doldrums where tent pole type films with little box office potential or momentum get a release and bang around for the left overs of the summer season pie.
