Kickstarter Watch: ‘Defense Grid 2’ and ‘Star Command’

Last week, we brought you the Ouya on the Kickstarter Watch, a new piece of open source streaming console hardware. This week, we are bringing two PC gaming projects that are high on the Flickcast’s radar.

Back at Comic Con International a few years ago, we got our first look at Defense Grid for XBox Live Arcade. Already a successful PC game, Defense Grid was easily the best tower defense game on XBox as well. They even released a Portal themed DLC pack. Now, the team at Hidden Path looks to help fund their sequel using Kickstarter. From the looks of things, Defense Grid 2 will cost the team at Hidden Path about $1,000,000 to make.

Instead of asking for just that cool million, the team has set up a tiered system. When reaching the $250,000 goal, they will be able to fund the Defense Grid: Containment expansion. At the halfway mark of $500,000, they will be able to be able to develop a multiplayer system, something not often discussed in tower defense titles as well as a new game engine. At $750,000, level editing software and expansion to both Linux and Mac platforms becomes available. Finally, at the million dollar mark, Defense Grid 2 can be made.

‘Diablo III’ and ‘Skylanders’ Sales Highlighted on Activision Earnings Call

Yesterday, Activision Blizzard had its second quarter earnings call and surprisingly the focus of the call was not around either World of Warcraft or Call of Duty. Instead it was Diablo III that was heralded as the biggest winner of the past quarter for the company. Diablo III scored more than 10,000,000 units sold since its release.

Also not surprising if you know any kids who play games is that Skylanders, including toy sales, was the best selling game for the first half of 2012. CEO Bobby Kotick also made sure to add that the toy sales of Skylanders outsold the highest selling toy lines in both the US and Europe.

As a result of the $1.05 billion dollars in overall earnings, predictions have gone up a full million for their $4.3 billion in expected earnings for the year. Still to come this year, Activision Blizzard has a full lineup for the remainder of the year with World of Warcraft’s Mists of Pandaria expansion , the juggernaut of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the toy powerhouse Skylanders Giants and franchise player Transformers: Fall of Cybertron featuring the dinobots. With the last Call of Duty breaking the billion dollar mark on top of these other huge titles, Activision Blizzard looks to maintain its top spot in the gaming world.

New ‘Doctor Who’ Series 7 Trailer Arrives

Awesome. That’s pretty much all you can say about it. Get to the U.S. soon please.

Ridley Scott’s Potential ‘Prometheus’ Sequel Is Still On Fox’s Radar

Despite a divided reception among fans and critics, Prometheus still managed to be a mild financial success for Fox this summer. So much so that the studio is actively working on a sequel to the prequel-ish film.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned directly from Fox that the potential continuation of this new branch of the Alien universe is in go mode:

Scott and the studio actively are pushing ahead with a follow-up (stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed) and are talking to new writers because Prometheus co-scribe Damon Lindelof might not be available. “Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it,”… A Prometheus sequel would be released in 2014 or 2015.

People give Fox a lot of gruff for how they have been handling their genre franchises in the last decade, but recently they have shown a commitment to those franchises that goes beyond the new standard of reboot. It is almost refreshing to see a studio stubbornly standing behind the good and bad of what came before.

In the case of Prometheus, even though some people didn’t like the film, few people disagree that heady sci-fi like that should be encouraged. So this news is met with cautious optimism, if for no other reason than the hope that we get the definitive Fassbender as a decapitated head film.

Keep it tuned to The Flickcast for any new updates on Prometheus 2: Electric Boogaloo.

‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’ is Moving to the Free-to-Play Model

Inevitability. Right now when you look at the MMO market, it is only a matter of time before a game will turn to the free-to-play model. While it is understandable for publishers and developers to try to get as much as they can from early adopters to recoup the massive cost of developing an epic MMO title, almost every title soon falls to the free-to-play model or it simply vanishes. Even with the juggernaut of being a part of the Star Wars franchise, it was only a matter of time before Star Wars: The Old Republic went this direction too.

Players who opt for the free-to-play method of Star Wars: The Old Republic will receive story content for all eight character classes and be able to get their character up to the current max of 50. They will be restricted from playing new content and only receive a limited amount of time in the game’s PvP warzones. Players can access this content by paying a monthly $14.99 fee or using a new in-game currency being created known as Cartel Coins. With this updated payment method, Bioware looks to roll out this new content every six weeks, creating more incentive for players to subscribe or purchase Cartel Coins.

‘The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1’ Animated Film Trailer Hits The ‘Net

For all the hit and miss of DC’s theatrical features in the last decade, their animated features have been mostly top-notch. The wealth of quality has evolved from the team that brought us the classic DC animated shows of the ’90s and early 2000’s.

No doubt to capitalize on the recent Batman movie the next direct to DVD animated feature is a two-part adaptation of the seminal Bat-tale, The Dark Knight Returns. There is little doubt that the film will be a visual marvel, Frank Miller’s work translates very well to moving images, but we have yet to see anything real to give us a sense of how it ‘feels’. Until Now.

MTV has debuted the first real trailer for part 1 of the animated epic, and for the uninitiated lets start with the synopsis:

Batman has not been seen for ten years. A new breed of criminal ravages Gotham City, forcing 55-year-old Bruce Wayne back into the cape and cowl. But, does he still have what it takes to fight crime in a new era?

What is interesting is how the trailer seems to emphasis the elements of the story that parallel the recent Christopher Nolan movie, and it kinda reminds us how much Nolan has been pulling from Miller’s work for his whole franchise. Which does kind of put a kibosh on the wild fan-boy theories that Nolan and Bale will return in twenty years to actually make a live action The Dark Knight Returns, it would be treading on some very familiar ground.

Check out the full new trailer after the jump.
