First ‘Man of Steel’ Teasers Arrive to Not Really Blow Us Away

I hate to say it but we were less than overwhelmed by the first teasers for director Zack Snyder’s new, upcoming take on Superman called Man of Steel. The studio has released them today and they’re up at Yahoo Movies and MSN. Fortuntely, they don’t mind sharing.

To be honest we were expecting one or two explosions or at least somebody getting his ass handed to him by Superman. I guess we’ll see that later. Maybe the effects aren’t done yet. Or, maybe they’re just trying to show that this won’t be a “typical” Zack Snyder movie — at least not completely.

Check out both teasers after the break. Man of Steel arrives in theaters next Summer.

Movie Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

This weekend sees the release of The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s final piece of his Dark Knight trilogy. There are two ways you can look at this film and the series as a whole, as films or as Batman adaptations.

The differentiation between those perspectives is something that I have been struggling with since the classic The Dark Knight hit theaters in 2008. Nolan is a master cinema craftsman, his Dark Knight movies are some of the most well made blockbusters in the history film.

The problem I encounter, is that these films have become increasingly less ‘Batman’. It is not that I think Nolan doesn’t ‘get’ the character, I think he just doesn’t really care.

So at the end of the day I am stuck with two opposing sides to my opinion, one that respects the cinematic merits of the Nolan’s trilogy, and one that is increasingly frustrated with its seeming disrespect shown to some key aspects of the source material.

From this point on my review will weave in and out of spoiler territory, so proceed at your own risk. If you are on the fence about seeing the film this weekend and want a non spoiler recommendation, I can say to you see the film. For all the qualms I have, it is still a well made piece of cinema that should be seen on the big screen with an eager crowd.

Svetlana Khodchenkova Might Be Replacing Jessica Biel In ‘The Wolverine’

Interesting development in the casting of The Wolverine. We reported that Jessica Biel might be signing on to an important role in the upcoming film, but then it didn’t happen.

Of course this is why we qualify these reports with has ‘might’, but it looks as if Jessica balked. No word on if she went another direction because of the script, the timing or just a general dislike to Hugh Jackman.

The movie chugs forth though, and it looks like Fox has already made gestures to another actress to fill the role of Viper, Twitch is reporting:

Twitch has learned that Fox is currently in talks with Svetlana Khodchenkova for the part and are expected to close the deal quickly. The twenty nine year old Russian actress has done most of her work in Russia to this point but may be familiar to some western audiences thanks to her part in Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

A solid, if untested, actress for what is likely an important role in a tent-pole blockbuster. There is a lot working against this film, but there is hope, because at its core Wolverine and Hugh Jackman are capable of being great.

Keep tuned to The Flickcast for any new updates as this project speeds towards production.

New Trailer For PTA’s ‘The Master’ Delivers A Better Sense Of The Upcoming Film

The Master is one of those major releases that is looming. The way the mains stream audience clamors with anticipation for a super hero movie, the more art-centric film community clamors for the next Paul Thomas Anderson film.

We showed you the excellent new poster for the movie yesterday, now we have a full theatrical trailer to sink our teeth into. For those of you not in the know about The Master, here is its synopsis:

A charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a religious organization following World War II. A drifter (Phoenix) becomes his right-hand man but as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.

We have seen a couple of teaser glimpses at the film, but this new trailer offers the first real jist of the story and the overall characters in the film. Especially Amy Adams, who has not really been a significant part of any market before the new one-sheet and this trailer.

It is also exciting to see Joaquin Phoenix embrace a serious role again, he is one of the better working actors in Hollywood, so hopefully his pit-stop in insanity is past him.

You can check out the full trailer after the jump.

Steven Spielberg Looks To Asgard For Casting Inspiration On ‘Robopocalypse’

Steven Spielberg is gearing up for his next major tent pole blockbuster. Summer 2014 is going to begin with a bearded bang with Robopocalypse, and it looks like Spielberg might have found his lead.

Deadline is reporting that secret meetings have been held and Spielberg has decided who he wants to star in his new film:

Chris Hemsworth will be working with Steven Spielberg. I’ve learned that, amid much secrecy (including assumed names), Spielberg met and now wants Hemsworth in his next helming effort Robopocalypse, the big technothriller which is sure to become the director’s next big global popcorn film

Hemsworth is about as big as they come these days, and as Marvel’s phase 2 chugs along his star power will only rise. Signing on to join Spielberg is exactly the kind of career move that can move a guy past flash in the pan and into full fledged stardom.

This is all rumor and speculation at this point, as no contract is currently signed. However, if Steven Spielberg taps you on the shoulder and says, ‘Hey kid, wanna star in my next movie‘ you only have one logical response.

No word yet on if Hemsworth’s character wields a mighty hammer, axe or any other bludgeoning melee weapon. For that info you must stay tuned to The Flickcast.

Kenneth Branagh Found The Villain For His Jack Ryan Reboot… In The Mirror

Kenneth Branagh has one of those careers that every struggling actor waiting tables in Los Angeles dreams of having. He is an extraordinary actor who has mastered The Bard and eventually turned himself into a well-respected director.

He is in his ‘tent pole’ era as a director right now, coming off of Thor his next project is a reboot of Jack Ryan for Paramount. Variety is reporting that Branagh might have finally found himself a villain for the project:

Paramount didn’t have to look far for the villain in its untitled Jack Ryan reboot, as the studio is in negotiations with Kenneth Branagh — who’s also directing the film — to star opposite Chris Pine in the action thriller that aims to reinvigorate the blockbuster franchise.

Directing a major blockbuster-to-be and being able to insert yourself as the main bad guy of the piece? Like said, the career every aspiring actor dreams of having.

As a wonderful, British, actor Branagh is a uniquely qualified for the bad guy role. In my estimation this reboot is shaping up rather nicely.

Expect the next Jack Ryan adventure to hit theaters some time next year, and stay tuned to The Flickcast for any other news about Branagh deciding to write the score of the film himself too.

Halloween Horror Nights At Universal Theme Parks Adds Two New Scary Franchises To Their Line-Up

If you have never had a chance to experience Halloween Horror Nights at either of the Universal Theme Parks, you are missing out. No theme park fully embraces a holiday quite like Universal.

They take their normal park and transform it into a series of haunted houses and amusements all set to different themes and franchises. While the are not always scary, the production values are always of the highest order. You also have to traverse through the park knowing at any time people with chainsaws could be jumping up behind you at any time.

Good clean fun.

This year Universal is adding two new franchises to their stable of haunted houses, Silent Hill and The Walking Dead. The Silent Hill attraction, announced at comic-con, is the first to be based on a video game. The haunted house will most likely take it’s cues from the iconic imagery of the early games and the upcoming movie.

The Walking Dead attraction was just made official today. While zombies are nothing new to the Halloween Horror Nights experience, The Walking Dead as a franchise offers a very specific escape and survive experience that will be fun to re-live if they can pull it off.

Check out a preview teaser of The Walking Dead attraction after the jump and try to find your self at a Universal Park this fall for some spooky fun.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’ Gets a Handsome New One-Sheet

I am not a PTA fan, so much so that I feel the need to state that at the top of this news item about the new one-sheet for his latest movie, The Master. I feel it is important for you to understand that context when I tell you how much I really love this poster.

The modern movie poster is a very specific beast. There is a pattern that these designers seem to fall into that can come across as lazy or uninspired. So when some one breaks the mold and delivers a legitimately interesting one sheet, you take notice.

This is not the first time PTA has inspired a rather brilliant poster, There Will Be Blood also had a pretty stellar one sheet design that was both classic and fresh all at once. And again, this is coming from the guy grumpy dude he thinks PTA is just a poor man’s Robert Altman, so I hope you can sense the real appreciation I am heaping on over here.

You can check out the full poster after the jump, and The Master when it hits cinema’s this fall.
