SDCC12: First Trailer for ‘OZ The Great and Powerful’ with James Franco and Milla Kunis Arrives

If you’re one of the people who’s always wished for a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, your wish has been granted. That’s right, Disney has gone ahead and made said prequel and its called Oz the Great and Powerful. It stars James Franco and Milla Kunis and is directed by Sam Raimi.

The first trailer for the film screened at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday and we’ve got it for you right here, just in case you weren’t able to make it to the Con this year. No need to thank us. It’s what we do.

Disney also screened a trailer for The Lone Ranger, which we’ll get for you just as soon as we can. Meantime, this trailer gives us a good idea what we can from the movie which tells the story of how the Wizard (Franco) first arrived in Oz and became its ruler.

Look for Oz the Great and Powerful to hit theaters on March 8 of 2013. Check out the trailer after the break.

The Director Carousel Keeps On Spinning At Fox

It seems as if every super hero project at Fox has to go through at least one director kerfuffle during it’s pre-production. So it is hardly a surprise to hear that Daredevil just lost its director.

David Slade has officially dropped out of the project that can ill afford any delays. If Fox can’t get this movie into production soon they run the risk of losing the rights back to Marvel. A pleasant prospect to anyone who doesn’t work for Fox.

Which is exactly why this is bitter-sweet news, because the fans ultimately win if Fox totally screws the pooch on this film and loses the rights.

That isn’t the only pertinent Fox based director news to hit today either. Josh Trank, who made the stellar super hero found footage movie Chronicle, has finally signed on the dotted line to take over Fantastic Four. Trank has been rumored for the job since the 8:00pm screenings let out on Chronicle‘s opening day, but it is nice to see the deal get inked.

While it would be nice to see FF get mired in the same sort of limbo that might bring Daredevil back to the Marvel Studios fold, I think Fox is capable of letting Trank make a Fantastic movie. Fox has done a lot to mend the fences with genre fans in the last couple of years with the resurgence of their X-Men and Apes franchises.

New Line’s ‘Vacation’ Sequel Might Have Landed Its Lead

The concept of a new Vacation movie is tricky. On one hand there is juice left in the original franchise, you could bring as much of the original gang back as possible and make a great flick out of it.

On the other hand, remaking the movie might allow it to be more relevant to today’s modern, family vacationing world, which has changed a lot since the original’s early ’80s release.

Well, it looks as if New Line has decided on a bit of compromise between the two concepts. The film will follow Rusty Griswold, Chevy Chase’s son in the series, as he takes his family on the titular trip.

And Variety is reporting that the new Rusty has just been pegged:

Ed Helms is getting ready to continue a Griswold family vacation tradition as the actor is in negotiations to star in New Line’s “Vacation.”… The new version of the vacation adventures of the quirky dad and his family will follow Rusty, who now has his own family misadventures on the road.

Helms is a great actor, and keeping the franchise rooted to the originals is a classy choice. Unless they fail to get Chase and Beverly D’Angelo back for at least a torch passing cameo.

Stay tuned to The Flickcast for any breaking news, as we are watching the development of this one closely and with fingers tightly crossed.

SDCC 2012: Marvel’s Booth Puts You In Iron Man’s Closet

One of the coolest things about Comic-Con is the booths. For one, they are increasingly elaborate displays dedicated to the biggest in pop culture franchises. They often display life-size or actual props from these films, and they have babes, really what’s not to love?

The year Marvel is pulling no punches at their booth, with this epic display showcasing Iron Man’s hall of armor. We caught a glimpse of this in the first released image of Iron Man 3 a few weeks ago. Now all you lucky folks heading to San Diego this weekend have the opportunity to see this monument to awesome first hand.

Marvel is riding a huge wave of success with their cinematic adventures these days, and before the high of The Avengers has had a chance to ware off they roll out more things to wow us. This reminds me of the five or six-year run PIXAR had last decade where they had three films in production at any given time and they were all legit classics.

You can check out a larger image of the display after the jump, and keep your eyes peeled on The Flickcast for any and all cool news bits to come out of the Con.

Our First Shot of Q in the New Bond Film ‘Skyfall’

One of the cornerstone elements of James Bond that has been absent in the Daniel Craig films has been the master of the gadgets, Q. Holding him back was likely to help make the films a little more serious, and in honesty it worked.

For the third new era Bond fans are expecting the franchise to start taking steps into the larger and more iconic sandbox that is James Bond. Especially considering that the film is being released in the 50th anniversary year.

The studio seems keen to deliver what the fans want as they have indeed put Q in the new film, and EW.com has just snagged the first official image of Ben Whishaw in character.

A younger, ‘nerd-chic’ version of Q might not sound like the right direction on paper, but looking at Whishaw in this image evokes all the right feelings in this Bond fan. Even if his wardrobe looks a tad like it was put together as a hipsters greatest hits outfit.

You can expect more tidbits and news on Skyfall in the coming days, as it is ‘geeks inherit the earth’ week down in San Diego. Stay tuned to The Flickcast for news from the show.

You can see the full-sized image after the jump.

SDCC 2012: Activision to Release ‘The Walking Dead’ Game Based of the AMC Series

The Walking Dead has proven itself to be a valuable franchise in comics (just hitting its 100th issue), on TV (being the top rated program on the AMC network) and in games (with Telltale’s adventure game being considered one of the top downloadable titles so far this year). It is no surprise that someone else would try to get their hands on it and leverage the property further.

While Telltale’s The Walking Dead revolves around the comic world, the AMC television series has its own separate continuity. While the two revolve around the same basic concept, the stories have already drastically diverged. It only makes sense that someone would want to further expand on this second continuity, especially with some of the intriguing characters introduced to it that never appeared in the comics.

Along with developer Terminal Reality, Activision will be publishing The Walking Dead in 2013. Terminal Reality most notably worked on the recent Star Wars Kinect and was also working on Demonick, the title being shown in development of Happy Madison’s Grandma’s Boy.
