Stan Lee Swings Into Action in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Gameplay Trailer

I know. I’m sorry. I had to. Usually puns are the worst but with Stan Lee involved, I feel like there is a little leeway. And don’t judge too much. After watching this trailer, you’ll be making spider puns all the way to your preorder for The Amazing Spider-Man too.

As we all know, the film with possibly the most pressure on it this summer because it falls between The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises is The Amazing Spider-Man. Luckily for Spidey though, there is nowhere nearly as much pressure on the movie tie-in game. Why?

Because Beenox has produced two high quality Spider-Man games over the last two years and they are going back to the formula that revolutionized super hero gameplay by bringing Spidey back to an open New York City. But Spidey isn’t coming by himself.

When pre-orders began for The Amazing Spider-Man, fans of Spider-Man and comics in general were granted an experience like they had never been given the opportunity to before… to play as Stan “The Man” Lee. And luckily, Stan has gotten a drastic upgrade to his physical capabilities.

Universal Hires a Pair of Quality Writers for ‘Jurassic Park 4’

Universal has been trying to keep the Jurassic Park franchise alive for a while. Despite being relatively mishandled from the moment the first film was a hit, the original classic still holds enough respect and love to warrant a fourth trip into that world.

One of the great urban legends of modern Hollywood is the bug-nutter Jurassic Park 4 script that included an elite squad of talking, super intelligent dinosaurs who were hunting down the normal dinosaurs in the people world. Given the two JP sequels we did get, you understand why people were inclined to believe that.

All signs point to that idea being scrapped, as Deadline reports Universal brought on a quality writing duo to work on Jurassic Park 4:

Universal is setting Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver to write the script for the fourth film, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Kennedy/Marshall’s Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Spielberg won’t direct this one.

For those unfamiliar with Jaffa and Silver, they were the writers behind last year’s excellent Rise of the Planet of the Apes. That film’s blend of science and disaster make them a seemingly great choice for the Jurassic Park franchise.

A little sad that Spielberg is already off the table as a director, but there are many other directors who could breath some new life into the franchise. In the meantime, Jurassic Park fans can get excited about the 3D release, set to hit theaters July 2013.

New Gameplay Trailer for ‘Dishonored’

Plagues. Powers. Stealth. And lots of stabbing people in the neck. Those are the first things that jump out when looking at the latest trailer for Dishonored. Coming from Arkane Studios, who developed Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and worked on the art and visual style of Bioshock 2, Dishonored puts players in the role of Corvo Atano, a bodyguard the an assassinated empress who has been framed for her murder. Obviously a title that doesn’t try to be ambiguous, Corvo must regain his honor by finding the man responsible by cutting a bloody path through anyone in his way.

One thing which quickly stands out is the power set being similar to both Bioshock and Singularity in the trailer below. The telekinesis looks very similar to the plasmid from Bioshock while stopping a pocket of time was right up Singularity’s alley. Even the art style has a Bioshock feel to it was the way characters appear within the world to the propaganda posters cleverly placed to even the environment that is falling apart on itself. There are also some notable Half-Life 2 inspirations seen as well. The gas masks worn by enemies and especially the walkers closely resemble the forces that Gordan Freeman was forced to tackle in Half-Life 2 and its episodes.

The trailer also has a fantastic score to it. A young girl’s eerie voice further pushes the desolation of the world we have given glimpses of. It also makes the violent acts shown feel that much worse as they are contrasted with the beautiful tones below them.

The ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Return This Fall… In Cartoon Form!

Most people who identify themselves as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans discovered the heroes in a half shell during their enormously successful first cartoon. It was that show that set a lot of the series trademarks that are essential turtle cannon to this day.

There have been other cartoons since the original, even quite popular ones, but nothing really compares to the impact of the original. It seems the people who are crafting the new Turtles cartoon show have a heavy dose respect for that incarnation as is evidenced by the debut trailer.

Debuting exclusively over at EW.com, the trailer for the upcoming cartoon gives us our first look at the animation style and tone of the show.  It looks like a cross between the classic Turtles, the Clone Wars and anime inspired Teen Titans show from a few years back.

Long time turtle fans should appreciate the general character designs and the tone of the characters, both of which seem to directly come from original cartoon. The animation style also seems appropriately epic for a show about  giant turtles fighting a secret ninja clan, and likely aliens.

The trailer will pop up officially everywhere tomorrow, but you can click over to the EW link and take a look at it right now. Hopefully this show ends up great, because a great TMNT cartoon is important for today’s youth.

Most people, in the US at least, know this is an election year. Come November, citizens will exercise their right to vote for the person who will be the President of the United States.

Of course, as we get closer to election day, we’re going to start seeing all kinds of political commercials designed to make the other guy look as bad as possible. These are known as “Attack Ads.”

Some enterprising folks over at Mother Jones got to thinking one day, as you sometimes do, about attack ads, Game of Thrones and the politics of Westeros. The result: Game of Thrones Attack Ads.

The three videos after the break are not only funny they help give us a bit of insight into the political system in the US. Didn’t know you were going to learn something today, did you?

Hans Zimmer Brings His Percussive Style To ‘Man of Steel’

The Superman reboot, Man of Steel, is a very important movie for Warner Bros. and DC. Green Lantern was lackluster and the current successful Batman franchise is coming to an end in just a few weeks. So the Superman reboot needs to connect if DC doesn’t want to start from scratch in the post-Avengers comic book movie world.

So what does Warner Bros. and DC feel is the best bet to make their new Superman a success? Why, they bring in as much of the creatives behind The Dark Knight franchise as possible to mimic that franchises success of course. The most recent addition coming in the form of composer Hans Zimmer joining up.

On the surface, Hans Zimmer is a great choice for the composer of a Superman movie. He is one of the greater action composers working today, and the more the reboot focuses on big, blustery action the better. On the flip side, Zimmer’s better works all tend to skew a little darker and less optimistic than past successful Superman scores shared.

One little quirk that seems to be present in all of the best Superman themes is that the music allows you to sing ‘Superman’ as a lyric. They are almost Superman anthems that reflect the bright and optimistic tone that defines the character. If Zimmer follows those themes for his music we could be in line for a very interesting score, otherwise this might represent yet another nail in the current DC movie-verse coffin.

Man of Steel hits theaters next year, stay tuned to The Flickcast for all the super-updates as the develop.

Paul Verhoeven’s Jesus Biopic Finally Gaining Traction, Lands Screenwriter

Paul Verhoeven has been trying to make a biopic on the life of Jesus Christ for years. That is a sentence that feels odd writing, but it is true. After many failed attempts to get the project off the ground Verhoeven published much of his research in the form of a book a few years back.

Well that book might have finally broken the clogged dam that was stopping that project as a screenwriter has just been attached. Coming Soon is reporting that Roger Avary has been brought on to adapt Verhoeven’s book into a feature:

A passion project of his for decades, Verhoeven released a book, “Jesus of Nazareth,” in 2010 that collected his years of research. In it, he attempts to construct a secular view of the religious icon. Deemed controversial by some, Verhoeven’s historical account paints Jesus not as the son of God, but as a remarkable, mortal thinker whose innovative principles are responsible for the creation and spread of Christianity.

Roger Avary and Paul Verhoeven are likely two of the last people anyone would ever expect to be involved with a serious biopic on the historical side of who Jesus Christ was. Both are actually coming off of years of industry silence, with Verhoeven taking most of the last decade off and Avary having been spending serious time in jail for a tragic manslaughter case.

The symmetry of this film being a bit of a redemption for these two filmmakers is not lost on us here at The Flickcast. We will no doubt be keeping a close eye on Jesus of Nazareth so stay tuned for any and all updates as they come in.

‘Monsters University’ The Sequel to the Incredible ‘Monsters Inc’ Gets A Debut Teaser

Monsters Inc is one of those classic PIXAR films that somehow manages to get better with age. It also happened to be the first PIXAR film that was released that confirmed that the animation studio was entering into a golden age, and not one hit wonder.

So people have been interested in a sequel for quite some time, structurally the movie doesn’t lead directly into another story so the filmmakers needed to come up with a good reason to revisit these characters before they moved forward with one.

That good reason presented itself as a prequel that exposed our main characters younger days in college. Check out the synopsis for more full story details:

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

A lot of people have the idea PIXAR is in a  bit of a slump, I respectfully disagree. Cars 2 might not have been the same level of artistic high like so much of the PIXAR catalog, but it was way better than people gave it credit for. Hopefully the upcoming slate of films, including Monsters University, restores the luster to the greatest force in animation since Walt himself.
