‘World War Z’ Brings in Damon Lindelof For Last Minute Fixes

Max Brooks’ World War Z is a masterpiece of modern zombie fiction. Successfully merging the traditional zombie tropes with a grand scale and an eerie realism that makes the story of the great Zombie War come alive. So at the height of Zombie popularity it is a natural that the book would be getting the big screen treatment.

On the surface everything seemed good for the film, it had a major movie star, a solid director and studio support. Yet something happened along the way, the movie started to fall apart. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the studio is bringing in some help try to right the ship:

Screenwriter Damon Lindelof has been brought in to save Paramount’s zombie movie World War Z… Its release has been pushed from December 2012 to June, 21 2013, and is awaiting significant reshoots. Lindelof, the Lost co-creator and co-author of Ridley Scott and Fox’s Prometheus, is said to be focusing on World War Z’s third act. The production hopes to begin reshoots in September or October.

The book has a pretty non-film friendly structure so it is no surprise that they are having difficulty on the writing end of things. It is just unfortunate that the problems are only just now being addressed after the main production and not much earlier in the process. Linedlof is a big idea guy, so hopefully he can crack the code.

The Flickcast will retain optimism on the project, keep posted for any new updates as they develop.

New Poster and Pics from ‘Dredd’ Make Justice Look Pretty Good

Let’s face it, the first big screen adaptation of the comic Judge Dredd, featuring a scenery chewing Sylvester Stallone and his infamous refrain “I am the law!”, left something to be desired. However, that didn’t stop the movie from being an enjoyable, albiet rather silly, movie going experience.

Fortunately, if you didn’t care for the Stallone version, another one is one the way. This time around Karl Urban (of Star Trek and Red) takes on the iconic Dredd role and to help get you ready for the film, just called Dredd this time, we’ve got a new poster and a couple pics from it for you.

But first, let’s get a bit of synopsis out of the way, shall we?

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

‘Thor 2’ Does Some Tweaking, Recasts One of the Warriors Three

Easily one of the best parts of the original Thor movie was the Warriors Three and Sif coming down to earth looking for Thor. This was the first time we really got to see serious juxtaposition between the Asgardian characters and the mere mortals on earth. Also Sif is a babe.

Unfortunately news has come out of the Hollywood Reporter that one of the fabled Warriors Three is getting recast:

Marvel Studios is targeting Zachary Levi to join the cast of Thor 2. He would replace Josh Dallas in the film. Dallas played Fandral, one of the Warriors Three in Thor, but is bowing out of the sequel to the 2011 hit movie due to his commitments to the ABC show Once Upon a Time.

Now Zach Levi is a geek favorite and a more than competent choice for the role, but Josh Dallas did such a great job with in the first film and has been killing it on Once Upon A Time as well. It would have been nice to see him get another go at the character.

That said, as previously mentioned, Levi is a wonderful actor too, and had it not been for a last second finale season to Chuck, he would have landed the role in the first place. If anything this should be looked upon as good news for fans of the Asgardian warriors, this could be a sign that their roles have been beefed up for the sequel. Can we have more Sif too?

‘The Hangover Part III’ to Take its Insanity South of the Boarder

The first Hangover film was fantastic, really nailing a raunchy, adult comedy in a stylish way that has rarely been seen since the 80s. The second film was basically an overseas beat for beat remake of the original. A photocopy of the first, which still meant it was funny, but some luster had worn off.

Despite that the sequel made a ton of monies at the Box Office, so you knew a third would be on its way. According to Life & Style we finally have a crazy location for the wolf-pack to get lost in:

An industry insider reveals to Life & Style the top-secret filming locations. “A lot of it will be shot in Los Angeles, but then they are going to do the crazy scenes in Las Vegas again and then one wild week in Tijuana,” the source tells Life & Style. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms are all set to reprise their roles.

Word has been percolating for quite some time that the third Hangover was going to have a bit of a different structure than the first too. This news actually leads a little credence to that as it seems the boys will have adventures all over Vegas, Southern California and even dipping down into Mexico.

The Flickcast will keep our ears out for any new updates on this big budget comedy sequel.

Box Office Report: ‘Madagascar 3’ Finishes Just Ahead of ‘Prometheus’ in a Solid Pair of Opening Weekends

Prometheus might have been the polarizing talking point over the weekend, but there is no debate that it made a ton of money over the weekend. Of course even it’s impressive haul was only good enough for second place in a competitive first frame for two new pictures.

Madagascar 3 came from behind after getting slightly edged on Friday with $60+ Million three-day weekend. The third film in the animated series was basically par for the course for the series, which is kind of impressive considering the general perception of the last film.

Coming in second on the weekend was the previously mentioned Ridley Scott film. Prometheus managed to top the $50 Million mark over the weekend which is a major win for the R-Rated horror/sci-fi film. Even though the film is polarizing audiences, its financial success is a win for fans of thought-provoking and edgy sci-fi.

E3 2012 Extra: ‘Defiance’ Comes to Platforms and SyFy

With the next generation of gaming’s announcement looming over E3 2013 after both Microsoft and Sony were silent during this year’s expo, the focus has changed for game’s of this year’s E3 being innovators in their own right. While game’s like Scribblenauts Unlimited promise to give players more creative options in the way they solve puzzles, other titles like Defiance promise to span across different forms of media in a truly unique scenario.

Way back in the Star Wars Galaxies MMO, players would experience player events which promised an impact on the future story of the game based upon how the playerbase performed. If more Rebels completed a mission, they would earn more benefits for their factions in the coming months. Defiance looks to take the roots of this premise and expand it in a way never before seen.

Defiance is going to be an MMOTPS (Massive Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter). This isn’t the first time an MMO shooter has been attempted as Planetside came out years ago and had a relative degree of success, enough that Planetside 2 is on its way. Unlike Planetside, Defiance will take place on earth and include PvE (player vs. environment) gameplay and not just straight PvP. But that’s not the defining feature that looks to set Defiance apart. In addition to being a game produced by Trion Worlds and coming to XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC, it will concurrently launch with a series for SyFy TV.
