E3 2012: Quantic Dream’s New IP ‘Beyond: Two Souls’ Gets A Debut Trailer

We recently showed you the brilliant short/tech demo Kara by innovative game studio Quanic Dream. It showcased the amazing technical capabilities of the PS3 and the story telling prowess of developer to amazing effect, all that was left was for Sony to announce what new game they were actually working on.

Leading off their 2012 E3 Conference, Sony announced that Quantic Dream has been working on an all new IP, Beyond: Two Souls. This game uses incredible character based graphics to tell the tale of Jodi Holmes who seems to be able to communicate with a powerful entity.

The developers were very quick to point out that they went out of their way to cast a top quality actress to be the lead in the game, Ellen Page. This emphasis on character and acting is a move that we are going to come to expect from Quantic Dream who already put out a character over game-play game, Heavy Rain.

At the Sony conference a debut trailer was showcased, that really shows off the character animation. The meat of the trailer is a scene from early in the game where Jodi is being interrogated by a small town sheriff. We then get some impressive, but quick glimpses of the action in the game.

Check out the full debut trailer after the jump.

Google to Acquire QuickOffice

As has been discussed many time before at this site and elsewhere, Apple pretty much dominated the tablet world with the iPad. When using the iPad, Apple has even provided iWork (at an extra charge of course), which are a pretty good suite of Office-type apps to use to get work done.

With the impending announcement of new Google Chrome and Android tablets it seems like the search giant is gearing up to get into the mobile office space in a big way with today’s announcement of the acquisition of QuickOffice.

“Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device,” the company wrote on its blog. “Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.”

Google already has a nice Office-like environment with Google Docs (now Google Drive). The acquisition of QuickOffice can only help to build on that to deliver an even better user experience and functionality.

Reebok to Produce A Line of Marvel Themed Sneakers

Sneakers are a big deal, a person’s shoes say a lot about them and quality sneakers are a bold statement. Up until now the sneaker world has pretty much been the realm of sports stars, with a couple tiny detours into general entertainment.

Now Reebok is looking for another brand of recognizable heroes to draw their foot apparel inspiration, Marvel Super Heroes. As opposed to the comic themes chucks we have seen in the past, these shoes draw inspiration from specific characters but don’t have specific comic imagery all over them. In fact, only the Captain America pair, with the giant A on the front, come across as immediately comic book based.

Eight total pairs have been announced thus far, with the shoes representing Captain America, Wolverine, Black Widow, Emma Frost, Deadpool, Sabertooth, Chamber, and the Red Skull. All of the shoes also seem to be in a range of styles, which will hopefully broaden the appeal of the sneakers and make the set more popular.

Aside from these eight, Marvel.com also alludes to a Spider-Man themed pair as well that should be announced sooner rather than later. The shoes will be released in waves, with the first sneakers based on Black Widow and Emma Frost available this July.

Take a look at a full gallery of the shoes after the jump.

E3 2012: Microsoft Announces Smart Glass, New Kinect, XBox Music and More

With E3 in full swing Microsoft was first out of the gate with announcements of new, cool stuff. At a special event yesterday the Redmond Giant revealed its Xbox 360 is now the world’s top selling gaming console, beating out the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

In addition, the company announced new features for the Kinect motion-sensing controller and will be incorporating voice-commands into popular games like Madden 13 and FIFA 13, which will allow gamers to call plays with simple commands. “This will be the biggest year for games on Xbox,” corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer said. “Last year we added over 200 million new movies, television shows and videos on Xbox Live. Over the next year we plan to double the content you can find on Xbox.”

During the event Microsoft also revealed its Xbox Music service for the Xbox 360, Windows Phone and Windows 8 platforms. Details are still scarce on this service but Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi promised the service will feature a library of over 30 million tracks. Not bad.

Microsoft also announced Xbox SmartGlass for Windows PCs and mobile devices including Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The app acts as a remote control and allows users to interact with and view games and videos on their consoles.

SmartGlass will also be able to serve as a secondary screen that provides additional content, whether it be from a video or a game on the 360, to the user’s PC or smartphone. Obviously, we’ll need to see this one in action in order to determine its real value, if any. Although, at least from the demo, it does look kinda cool.

Microsoft’s full press release is after the break.

E3 2012: ‘Hawken’ Live Action Story Trailer

Some years ago, mechs were one of the big things in gaming but when FPS games became the big thing on consoles, the market for mech games began to shrink. Hawken looks to change that and bring mechs back in a big way.

Setting its sights on the 12.12.12 release date, Hawken will bring a FPS mech perspective in fast paced arena style gameplay. The PC only title will launch with a team deathmatch, free-for-all deathman, “siege” and one additional still to be announced mode. There is additional content planned for DLC. To separate the gameplay from traditional FPS systems, Hawken will not have an ammunition system but instead have weapons prone to overheating which will cause a player to have to retreat and recover.

Check out the live action trailer below for Hawken which looks stunning and gives players an idea of the world they will soon find themselves immersed in. Hawken is due out on December 12th of this year on PC. Stick to the Flickcast for more E3 2012 news.

Monday Picks: ‘Death Wish’

This week’s pick is Death Wish (1974) which stars Charles Bronson as a vigilante who cleans up the seedy streets of New York in this classic tale of revenge. The film was based on the novel written by Brian Garfield and boasts a great score from famed musician Herbie Hancock.

Bronson stars as Paul Kersey an architect whose family is brutally attacked by vicious hoodlums. His wife is murdered and his daughter is raped and left for dead in their own apartment. Without any leads and the inability of his daughter to make a positive ID due to her catatonic state, the police are powerless to do anything. Paul is devastated and begins to adopt a new sense of self-preservation.

The film takes a while to build up momentum but when it does, it really gets going. Trying to put the incident behind him and get on with his life and his work, Paul is sent to Arizona by his boss to oversee a new land development deal. Paul arrives in Tucson, Arizona and is met by Ames Jainchill (Stuart Margolin) who shows Paul the land where he wants to develop property. After witnessing a mock gunfight at an old movie set in Tucson, Ames takes Paul to a gun club where Ames is impressed with Paul’s deadeye shooting.

First Official ‘Iron Man 3’ Image Shows Off Tony Stark’s Wardrobe

Iron Man 3 will be the first Marvel Studios movie post-The Avengers, so expectations will be higher than ever for a Marvel movie. People have never been more excited about the Marvel Brand and with Marvel Studios blazing a new trail in franchise film-making, every new film is an exciting prospect.

Early word on Iron Man 3 is that Shane Black is pulling back on the shared universe concept and making sure his movie focuses primarily on Iron Man, and not a bigger picture. A dangerous, but ultimately smart choice intended on strengthening the character and his own franchise, much like solo series do in the comic world.

With that internal focus it is appropriate that the first official image from the film is very specific and very iconic to the Iron man franchise, the suits. Tony Stark looking over his seven previous suits, showing just how far he has come since that clunky Mark 1.

We might be reading too much into this, but with the film leaning heavy on the Exremis story line, there is a nice symmetry to this being the first official Iron Man image. Depending on how closely they follow Warren Ellis’ story the 8th suit will be an interesting conceptual departure from what we have seen thus far.

Take a look at the at the full size image after the jump.

E3 2012: ‘Naughty Bear’ Somehow Gets a Sequel: ‘Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise’

Critical success doesn’t always mean financial success and critical failure doesn’t always mean financial failure either. Take Naughty Bear for example. Despite a 43 rating on Metacritic.com, the game was able to sell enough copies to warrant a Gold Edition rerelease which included DLC, extra costumes and new multiplayer modes. But even with those developments, it has been somewhat of a shocker to hear the game would be getting a sequel.

505 Games has released an announcement trailer for Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise which will be coming to XBox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network as a downloadable title. For those who never played Naughty Bear, the game is essential the perfect example of showing people why not to be a bully. For some reason, in his early stuffed life Naughty Bear never became friends with the other bears. Now bitter, Naughty Bear extracts revenge in terribly violent ways on those who tortured him.

Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise looks to expand on this concept with Naughty following a group of bears on vacation after not inviting him. But really, who could blame them? Would you invite a homicidal lunatic on vacation with you? Even if he didn’t kill you, he would probably get you kicked out of your hotel.

Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise is headed to the PlayStation Network and XBLA this fall. Check out the full trailer below and stick to the Flickcast for your E3 coverage.
