First Trailer for ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax’ Hits the Web

Last year didn’t have many major hits, but one film that managed to sneak past critics and turned out to be one of the highest grossing films of the year was the animated film Despicable Me. Bringing in both kids and adults alike, the film was able to prove that Pixar isn’t the only studio to produce quality CG-animated films.

Now, from the same studio, and the man who brought us The Cat in the Hat, comes The Lorax. For those who aren’t aware of this lesser known Seussian tale, here’s a breakdown.

From the creators of Despicable Me and the imagination of Dr. Seuss comes the 3D-CG feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, an adaptation of the classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

The film has a pretty awesome cast, featuring Danny DeVito, Zac Eforn, Betty White, Taylor Swift, and Ed Helms. We’ve got a bit before the film hits theaters on March 2nd, but you can check out the trailer after the jump.

First Trailer for New Starz Series ‘Magic City’ with Jeffrey Dean Morgan Arrives

With their new show Boss already off to a strong start and with previous hits like Spartacus: Blood and Sand, it looks like Starz is trying to find success again with another original dramatic series. This time around instead of modern day Chicago and Kelsey Grammer or ancient Rome and the late, great Andy Whitfield, we get 1959 Miami and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Magic City.

Not that we’re complaining. In fact, the show looks pretty good, judging from the trailer for it released today. Although, if you have Starz (as some of here at The Flickcast do) you’ve already seen this promo.

Seen it or not, you can check it out and realize, as we have, Starz is hear to stay in the dramatic series department. In addition to Morgan starring as a Miami hotelier and family man with ties to the mob, the series also features Olga Kurylenko as his wife and Danny Huston as a mob boss.

The series premieres in the spring. In the meantime, check out the trailer after the break.

Game Review: ‘Dance Central 2’ for XBox 360 Kinect

A year ago, Activision proved you could have too much of a good thing with their Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock release which has been the last major band based rhythm game to come out with any sort of real backing to the mass market. For years, guitar and band games dominated sales charts between Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Those who presumably had taken this the worst had to be Harmonix who had pioneered the plastic instrument market with the original Guitar Hero only to see their own new franchise Rock Band take a beating from the oversaturated market caused by Activision. But from the ashes of so many plastic guitars and drum kits, a new genre came back to life with the dance game with both Dance Central and Just Dance.

Dance Central would captivate the world by measuring the full use of the dancer’s body to see how accurately they could replicate the motions on screen which quickly made it the defining piece of hardware for the newly launched XBox 360 Kinect peripheral. Now, Dance Central 2 returns to show you really can’t have too much of a good thing… as long as you do it right.

Gameplay:

Dance Central 2, like its predecessor, revolves around players standing in front of their TV and mirroring the dance moves in front of them. At heart, it is an incredibly simple concept but anyone who has tried dancing at any point in their life can vouch that just because you can see it done in front of you, it doesn’t mean you can do it too without a little practice.

Dance Central 2 works with all levels of dance skill thankfully so people who are experienced dancers can be challenged while rookie rump shakers can still enjoy themselves even though their arms and legs flailing in the air may make them look like they are having a seizure to passersby. Thankfully, individual dances still have the freestyle sections where the Kinect takes pictures of players to remind them just how silly they look in motion.

Apple’s Newsstand App Causes Surge In Magazine Subscriptions

I’ve been a fan of reading magazines on the iPad since I first got one at launch. However, I’m pretty invested in another application that provides them for reading: Zinio. It’s a great app and works pretty well.

Obviously, Apple felt a need to also have a magazine app of their own and developed Newsstand for iOS 5. It’s been out for a month or so now and, to say the least, it appears to be doing well — and not just for Apple.

According to paidContent, Condé Nast recently said its weekly subscription sales for nine of its digital magazines such as Allure, Brides, Glamour, Self, GQ, Golf Digest, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Wired has increased 268% since the storefront made its debut alongside iOS 5. In addition, sales of single issues has risen 142% in comparison to the eight weeks prior to Apple’s launch of Newsstand.

“Putting all the magazines in one place just makes the most sense, in terms of allowing easy discovery for consumers,” Condé Nast executive vice president Monia Ray told paidContent. “Furthermore, the update from iOS 5 is terrific, especially the background loading.

We have a lot of features embedded in our titles and they take time to load. Background loading helps ease the wait-factor. But for the most part, before, the App Store represented a wide-ranging bazaar. Now, it has clear aisles to make it simple for consumers to browse.”

Have you subscribed to any magazines yet in Apple’s Newsstand? If so, what did you get and how do you like it?

Exclusive Interview: Cast of USA’s ‘Psych’ Talks Love Interests, More

We had the opportunity to sit down with the cast of USA’s hit show Psych about a police consultant with an uncanny ability to pick up clues, almost psychically, some would say.  This season the detectives have more on their minds then just solving wacky crimes and spotting pineapples.

With love blooming in the air for even the most skeptical (I’m talking to you Lassie), I decided to question the cast on their pursuit of romance.

The Flickcast: Can you tell us what your favorite episode to shoot was this season?

Timothy Omundson as Carlton “Lassie” Lassiter: We did an episode that James [Roday] directed, which he and Todd [Harthan, producer] wrote called, “This Episode Sucks”, it’s a vampire episode, but to me it’s important because it’s the Lassiter falls in love episode.

First Footage of Nightwing Released for ‘Batman: Arkham City’

Batman: Arkham City is about to unleash it’s first major DLC, and Warner Bros has just released the pack’s first trailer. The Nightwing DLC gives you a new character to play, exclusive maps and another Batman: The Animated Series skin. The new content adds in the fan favorite Nightwing  who began his crime frighting career as the original Robin.

Nightwing as a character brings a few new tweaks to the already stellar fighting mechanics. His history as an acrobat has not been ignored with some incredible agility displayed in the trailer, and his wrist shooter looks to be executed very well. The weapon of choice for the newest hero in this game is his dual batons, these dangerous blunt weapons also appear to have some connective electric properties. Undoubtedly these will be a blast to stick into the faces of random goons for hours and hours.

If there is a single problem I have had with the Batman Arkham games it has been with character design. It took me a long time to get behind the main looks in Arkham Asylum, and only Two-Face really gels with me right now in Arkham City. Principle amongst the new characters whose design I don’t like is Robin, so my excitement level goes through the roof when we see a Nightwing that looks perfect.

The DLC hits on November 1st and you can catch the full trailer after the jump.

Horror Blu-Ray Review: ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale’

It’s rare that we ever come across a film that crosses two very different genres so seamlessly as the Finnish film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Based on the series of shorts in which a Finnish shipping company explains the best and worst ways in dealing with renegade Santa Clauses, this story tells the tale of how that fictional company came to be.

Marketed as a horror, yet played as a Joe Dante-esque holiday adventure, Exports is able to both scare the crap out of you with hundreds of naked old men, as it is able to make you smile at the ridiculousness of hundreds of naked old men running through the snow.

If you’ve got the stomach for a film in subtitles, we recommend watching this one in its original tongue. Skip the dubs so you don’t get lost in some of the performances that make this playful horror film as fun as it is.

Some may consider the film to be a bit of a slow build for what is surely an epic and explosive ending, but if you relate with the two curious boys or any of the members of the search party then you will be along for every minute of the action here.
