SDCC11: Lionsgate Announces ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ Release Date

Yes, there’s bound to be several barbarian-like hordes of Twilight fans (that is, if there were a tribe of sickly-looking, sparkle-ridden barbarians…maybe those wimpy Phoenicians) at this year’s Comic Con, but those of us who prefer vampires of Buffy-slaying variety will be pleased to know that Buffy creator Joss Whedon’s newest project A Cabin in the Woods now has a U.S. release date: April 13th, 2012. Need I mention that’s a Friday? OOooOOoooOOo!

Aside from Whedon producing and co-writing with frequent collaborator and Cloverfield and Buffy writer Drew Goddard (who’s also directing), Cabin stars Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth as a young professional who, with a group of friends, visits a rustic cabin in the woods (makes sense) “and ends up scratching the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out.” My guess is that it’s a busted septic line.

The film also stars Richard Jenkins (Let Me In), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Kristen Connolly (The Happening), Brian J. White (Stomp the Yard), Amy Acker (Angel), Fran Kranz (Donnie Darko), and Jesse Williams (Brooklyn’s Finest). Not much else has been said about the film, but with such names behind it, we can expect some genre-bending badassery (septic tank or not). Whedon himself has described it as, “The horror movie to end all horror movies,” though he may be slightly biased.

Get a Look at the Final Season of HBO’ ‘Entourage’

As a rule I don’t really like most TV shows and movies about Hollywood. Obviously, there are exceptions such as Billy Wilder’s exceptional Sunset Blvd. and Robert Altman’s The Player.

But usually, TV shows and movies about Hollywood never seems to get it right. Plus, it would be like a Doctor watching a show about Doctors or a Cop watching a show about Cops. They’re not only not that interested because they live it but also the shows invariably get so many things wrong.

So it was with no small amount of surprise that I found myself watching HBO’s Entourage when it first premiered. More than that, I actually liked it and continued to watch it over the course of its seven seasons.

Now the show is about to premiere its eighth and final season this Sunday and to get you ready, we’ve got a ton of videos to share with you today. First up is an extended trailer showing the highlights for the upping season The rest are interviews with the various cast members discussing their feelings about the show and its impending end.

Check out all the videos after the break. Entourage returns for its final season on Sunday, July 24th at 9:30.

The Third ‘Hobbit’ Production Diary Hits

Peter Jackson has never been too shy to allow cameras to document the behind the scenes machinations of the Lord of the Rings franchise. The original trilogy had hundreds of hours of special features dedicated to the creation of the popular film franchise.

Now with The Hobbit in full swing the tradition continues. Jackson has just released his third production diary, this time focusing on the recently revealed dwarves. The diary itself is structured around cast and crews favorite memories of the first block of shooting, but thigs quickly develop into a dwarf love fest. It is clear that diminutive stars of the film are quickly becoming the life of the sets.

Besides the dwarves, the diary also showcases a few quick tidbits that will make any ringer giddy. We see more of the “Riddles in the Dark” scene, including some decent angles of Martin Freeman in full costume and Gollum in his mo cap suit. Elrond, Gandalf and Galadrial show up to tease a certain council meeting and there’s a father son reunion of Gimili and Gloin.

Finally the diary ends on a wonderful surprise that I refuse to ruin for you, but suffice to say it is a comforting sight to see.

Check out all three of the first diaries after the jump. The Hobbit arrives in theaters in 2012.

SDCC11 Exclusive: Dee Brown of Beenox Talks ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’

At the Activision event here at Comic-Con in San Diego, I had the opportunity to speak with Dee Brown of Beenox. You may remember Dee from last year’s where we talked to him about Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Now, a year later, Beenox is getting ready to unleash their latest Spider-Man title known as Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Dee tells us in the interview below that 11 years ago, he and the Beenox team set out to take over the world and from the looks of things, Spider-Man: Edge of Time looks to be another step in the process. We take the time to discuss with Dee the choices of this upcoming title including the decision to place Anti-Venom, a “good guy”, as one of Spider-Man’s antagonists as well as the announcement of the Black Cat in the game.

Activision and Beenox were also pleased to announce that Spider-Man: Edge of Time would be coming to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 4th of this year.

Check out the interview after the break. Be sure to let us know your thoughts on Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

SDCC11: Dark Horse Bringing Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Strain’ to Comics

With Comic-Con in San Diego kicking off today the announcements of new and exciting projects are going to start coming fast and furious. Sadly, there won’t be anything about Vin Diesel — at least in this case. See what we did there?

Instead, this particular announcement concerns a different star (well two, actually): Director Guillermo del Toro and Dark Horse Comic. That’s right, del Toro is teaming up with Dark Horse Comics to bring his horror novel The Strain to the pages of a comic series.

Written in conjunction with novelist Chuck Hogan, the novel concerns a mysterious airplane that lands at JFK Airport and then goes dark on the runway. The Center for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders.

However, he isn’t the one able to really solve the mystery. Instead, an elderly pawnbroker from Spanish Harlem, who suspects a darker purpose behind the event, realizes an ancient threat intent on covering mankind in darkness is responsible.

Adapted by writer David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Kull), with art by Mike Huddleston (MK Ultra), the first issue arrives in stores on December 14.

New ‘Avengers’ Poster Arrives

With Comic-Con set to start tomorrow, Marvel has taken this opportunity to release the barebones first teaser poster for their upcoming Avengers film. With not much to go on except a giant “A’ the poster is minimalism at its best.

Of course, the “A” stands for Avengers and we also have the obligatory tagline (or tag word as the case may be) “Assemble.” If you’re not a fan of this poster and were expecting a lot more, don’t worry – you’ll get more soon enough.

Until then, you can always hit the Marvel booth for the signings by Joss Whedon, Chris Evans and Clark Gregg. That is, if you happen to be at Comic-Con this week.

Either way, you can expect a lot of new marketing stuff to come out soon enough. Count on it.

The Avengers, which opens May 4, 2012, also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson. Check out the full sized poster after the jump.

Web Video Roundup: X-Men’s Born This Way, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Fight Scene, & Toyota’s Future Window

Looks like Old Spice is still producing weird commercials, but now they’ve  got a brand new spokesman in Fabio. Improvement?

While the Dark Knight Rises teaser was pretty awesome, it’s nowhere near as awesome as the trailer mashed up with Batman: The Animated Series.

Lady GaGa’s Born This Way has got an X-Men makeover, and now there’s even a killer video to go along with it.

Beastie Boys get an amazing new music video for the classic hit Sure Shot, but this time with the Muppets from Sesame Street.
