E3 2011: Sony Announces ‘Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time’ for PS3

Sly Cooper has got to be one of my all-time favorite franchises. Playing Sly Cooper and the Thevius Racoonus back in high school really revitalized my love for gaming in a way that any other title hadn’t in a long, long time.

Replaying all three of the original games remastered for the Playstation 3 was a real treat, especially because I hadn’t gotten a chance to catch Sly 3 when it was on Playstation 2. So when Sony announced that a brand-spankin’ new Sly Cooper game was on the way today at their E3 press conference, the twelve year old in me jumped up and down a little bit.

The fourth game in the Sly Cooper series, titled Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, seems to have retained everything we know and love about the series, with the addition of some slick PS3 graphics. Sly seems to be up to his usual tricks in the teaser trailer, sliding, sneaking, and stealing his way through the city on yet another heist, along with familiar friends Bentley, Murray, and even former enemy-turned-ally Dimitri Lousteau.

Not the biggest announcement from Sony last night, nor an unexpected one, but hey, it’s great to see this franchise finally get a sequel. And coming from the talented people at Sucker Punch, this game is sure to be awesome.

You can watch the trailer for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time after the jump.

Trailer Tuesdays: Girl Movies

Guys see movies for a lot of different reasons. Most will only admit to getting excited for the newest raunchy comedies or fast paced action movies, but how many of them are secretly enjoying themselves when they get dragged to a date movie and are forced to see something a little more “girly”? Everyone has a few guilty pleasures hiding in their DVD collection, and it takes a real man to admit that he’s popped in Love Actually just as many times as the Bourne Trilogy.

This week’s theme is both a literal and figurative.  We have one crazy movie about a girl, two movies to see with the girlfriend, and a documentary to check out when she’s not around.

Stop the presses!  Here it is, this is the movie to watch for in 2011.  Based on the literary phenomenon The Millennium Trilogy, this film is a remake of the 2009 Swedish film of the same name.  Already dubbed “The feel bad movie of Christmas”, I think this film has a lot more in store for us than even this exciting teaser shows us.

Director David Fincher has been pumping out masterpiece after masterpiece the past few years, sending him on the fast track to becoming one of the most legendary filmmakers of our generation.  With an early track record including such film school favorites as Se7en and Fight Club, he has since settled into a core group of creative collaborators that he has worked with on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and, most recently, The Social Network, which has propelled him to the front of critical acclaim, box office success, and Oscar recognition.

E3 2011: Nintendo Announces WiiU Controller, But Where’s The Console?

As E3 continues its week-long gaming announcements and innovation, today was expected to be a pretty big day as Nintendo took the stage to announce some of their big new products.

One of the huge announcements coming from Nintendo today was the announcement of WiiU. What is WiiU? Well it’s a controller and a tablet and a gaming window all rolled into one. The WiiU refers to an iPad-sized tablet with buttons and a viewers so that you can do a number of things from catch a virtual baseball to use the viewer as a scope when playing in a shooter, and even play table-top games without the use of an actual console.

We’re excited to see what the WiiU can bring to the NextGen table, but is this the new console that Nintendo has been teasing about for this event? We don’t think so, because many of the guests in the video package mentioned that their new releases such as Batman Arkham City, Tekken, and a brand new Zelda game yet to be released will be the perfect fit for “the new console”.

So this new WiiU may allow you to continue a game even after someone has changed the channel on the TV, or teach you how to draw, but is it the answer to our NextGen console needs? We don’t think so. We’re hoping to get more details as they arrive this week.

E3 2011: Other Highlights of the Sony Press Confrence

We’ve got too much stuff to do to be everywhere so as we did for Ubisoft and Microsoft, we also skipped the Sony press conference as well. Heck, we just wanted them to apologize for all the PSN problems lately and tell us a solution had been found to actually secure their network.

As we knew that probably wasn’t going to happen it didn’t seem like a press event we absolutely had to attend. Not when we could do the same as before and rely on our friends at Geek Week for some help. Although, we did already bring you the news of the new Sony Vita.

Here’s the rest of the highlights from the Sony press conference last night:

• Sony previews MORTAL KOMBAT, UNCHARTED 3, and RACHET & CLANK: ALL 4 ONE in 3D

• Gameplay of UNCHARTED 3 is demoed, and a 3D trailer is shown

• RESISTANCE 3 is demoed in 3D; on September 6, Sony will offer a $150 sharpshooter bundle for RESISTANCE 3, which includes the game, a gun, and a Move kit

• GOD OF WAR: ORIGINS COLLECTIONS announced, with 3D support

• Sony is developing a special 24″ television with two-player splitscreen technology that will allow players wearing special glasses to play two-player games on one screen

E3 2011: Sony Debuts PS Vita

It was no secret that Sony would be bringing along their newest portable console to this year’s E3, and last night we finally got some details on the much-anticipated follow-up to the Playstation Portable. This new device, formerly known as the NGP, was revealed, newly dubbed as the PS Vita.

The PS Vita sports some impressive hardware features, including dual analog sticks and touch screens, one in front and one in the back. It also has an OLED screen, GPS, and six axis motion sensors. The device features the standard d-pad and familiar Playstation four button placement above the analog sticks.

If you’re in the US, the PS Vita will cost you $249 for the Wi-Fi and $299 for the 3G/Wi-Fi model, available on AT&T. These points price the PS Vita right alongside the Nintendo 3DS, and we can expect to see the device released by the end of the year.

While Sony gave audiences a lot of details on the PS Vita itself, not much was said in the way of games we can expect to see on the platform. The fact that the Uncharted franchise was to appear on the Vita was no surprise, but it was still a treat to see the way the game will mix traditional thumbpad gameplay with the PS Vita’s touch features.

E3 2011: Ubisoft Announces ‘Far Cry 3′, ‘Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’ Demo and More!

At a press confrence late yesterday game publisher Ubisoft’s made several announcements sure to please fanboys and girls everywhere. As we were otherwise occupied (ok, distracted by shiny Apple goodness) we didn’t make it to the press event.

Fortunately, our pals at Geek Week were there to bail us out yet again (we oe them a beer). Here’s the highlights of the Ubisoft announcements for your reading pleasure:

• RAYMAN ORIGINS announced and demoed; lots of variety, including platforming, chasing, and boss fights

• DRIVER: SAN FRANCISCO previewed

• BROTHERS IN ARMS: FURIOUS 4 footage shown, which features Stitch, Crockett, Chok, and Montana killing Nazis in a bar

• GHOST RECON: FUTURE SOLDIER demoed; beta open for GHOST RECON ONLINE, free PC service

• TRACKMANIA 2 footage previewed; it is all in-game footage that has been created by players; the game is due out in September

‘Salt 2′ With Angelina Jolie On the Way from Sony Pictures

We know you’re excited about all the cool E3 and Apple news this week and don’t worry, there’s more to come. Let’s pause, however, and take a look at some news from Hollywood, shall we?

According to reports, Sony is moving forward with a sequel to the Angelena Jolie action vehicle Salt which came out last year. Writer Kurt Wimmer has begun working on a script and Jolie is reportedly hot to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy but eventually ends up saving the day.

For those of you who missed Salt the first time around it’s a solid action thriller with some good twists and competent direction from veteran Phillip Noyce, whose previous film include Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Bone Collector. You can check it out on Netflix Instant if you’re curious.

Sony could do worse making a sequel to Salt. I’m sure they would love to continue the series of films and establish a solid franchise. The company could probably use some good news these days.

E3 2011: ‘Bioshock Infinite’ E3 Trailer

As if we weren’t excited enough for Bioshock Infinite after what we were shown at PAX East, Irrational Games showed off a new trailer at E3 yesterday.

While short and a bit frenetic, the trailer gives us a taste of everything Bioshock Infinite has to offer, from the weapons and powers you’ll be wielding, the chaos and violence consuming the city of Colombia, and the fraught relationship between you and Caroline.

After the trailer was shown, Irrational Games’ Ken Levine announced that Bioshock Infinite will have some Playstation Move support, though he did not say how. He also revealed that a Bioshock game is in the works for the recently revealed PS Vita.

Bioshock Infinite will be released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC sometime next year. You can watch the trailer after the jump.
