Box Office: A Couple Of Jackasses Win The Weekend

Well, the Jackass gang was at it again, this time offering their usual gags, gross-outs and stunts in 3D.  The 3D format payed off as Jackass 3D broke the opening weekend record for Fall (considered the months of September and October) that was previously held by Scary Movie 3.

Jackass 3D managed to make a very impressive $50 M over the weekend.  It is estimated that 90 percent of its business were on 3D screens, so in this case, the 3D surcharge definitely helped pad the total for the movie.  Friday’s total of $21 M may be an opening day record as well, if the totals hold true.

The talented ensemble cast of Red helped propel the movie to second place over the weekend, earning a respectable $22.5 M over the weekend.  It also received a coveted A+ score from audiences, according to pollster cinemascore. Those don’t come along very often, and they often indicate that the film will benefit from good word of mouth.

David Fincher’s The Social Network continues to perform strongly.  It only dropped 28% from last week’s totals, and placed a strong third at the box office with $11 M. After three weeks, the movie has made $63 M, besting its budget of $50 M.

Secretariat appears to be running a slow and steady box office race. The film only dropped off 25% from last weekend for third place, making another $9.5 M.  It is very rare for a film to drop less than 30% after opening weekend, so Secretariat may surprise us by making its money over time, not just the opening weekend.  After two weekends, the film has made around $27 M, but its budget was only $35 M, so it looks like it will be in good shape financially.

Holdover Life As We Know It was able to retain much of its momentum as well, earning an additional $9M for fifth place. Outside of the top ten, upcoming documentary Inside Job boasted a high $9,000/per screen, playing on just 1o screens.  The documentary about the Wall Street collapse is garnering some serious buzz.

Also enjoying great per/screen averages was Hilary Swank’s inspiring legal drama, Conviction.  Though it only played on 11 screens, it had a $10,000 per/screen average.

New Trailer for ‘Wrecked’ Now Online

How many times has this happened to you? You wake up in a car, its smashed up and you have no memory of how you got there or what happened. Sound familiar?

Well, even if it doesn’t sound familiar, it still makes for an interesting premise for a movie to be sure. Fortunately, someone already had the idea and has made a movie that starts off just that way. The movie, which features Adrien Brody and is called Wrecked, tells the story of Brody’s character who wakes up in a forest after a car accident and has no idea how he got there or what happened.

Then, as he piece together the events leading to his predicament, things don’t turn out at all ho they seem. In fact, they don’t turn out very good at all. The film was directed by Michael Greenspan and is slated for release next year.

Review: ‘Jackass 3D’

It’s almost unnecessary, writing a review for Jackass: Everyone who’s a fan will see it, everyone who isn’t will ignore it, and those who don’t know what it is will run screaming from the theatre long before Steve-O launches a geyser of defecation up onto a quaint, little forest scene.

For the last group, if they’re curious enough to keep reading after that last sentence,Jackass was a show on MTV that featured a handful of professional skateboarders, stuntmen, and fellows crazy and with a high-enough threshold of pain to engage in a series of dangerous and humiliating stunts, ranging from teeballs to the testicles to taunting rams with tubas to drinking the excretions from some of the most unpleasant bodily orifices.

Why? Because leader Johnny Knoxville and his band of depraved good spirits have a knack for survival, no shame, and an appreciation that, yes, there is a lowest common denominator, and that it has a lot of appeal.

It’s not really a movie so much as a venue to perform the kinds of stunts that even MTV’s censors would not allow—example: one of the stunts features a crewmember using his genitals to hit a golfball (I wonder how many takes were needed to get that final shot). Another involves copious amounts of dog doo. Still another…

TV RECAP: ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac and Charlie: White Trash’

I’ve never thought much about the class dynamic of the Gang—Dee and Dennis representing the upper crust of society and Mac and Charlie bringing up the dregs. God knows where Frank fits in. How did they all join up and decide to open a bar? What made Dennis break the barrier and allow himself to manage a business with two degenerates (I always figured Dee was a tag-along)?

It’d be prime territory to mine the origins of the group (and who doesn’t love seeing the early family lives of the four? One of the highlights of the Christmas Special was the glimpse we get into each one’s childhood memories). But “White Trash,” while it brings up the class differences, doesn’t explore it too deeply.

As the episode opens, there’s a heat wave in Philly, which gets the Gang itching for a dip in one of Philadelphia’s three pools, the first being at the local Country Club (which seems odd that they haven’t been banned from it yet).

Mac and Charlie show up, a six-pack and Charlie’s adorable little inflatable fish in tow, only to be rejected for not being members, and when they ask how to become members, are told that the Club’s already at capacity.

Back at the bar, they pitch a plan for fixing up one of the dilapidated old pools of their youth to Frank, who isn’t interested, while Dee and Dennis maintain that real reason the Country Club wouldn’t take M&C is because they’re white trash (hence the title).

Mac and Charlie head to the fixer-upper pool while Dee and Dennis try their luck at the Country Club…and meet pretty much the same response as Mac and Charlie. Crestfallen, they hit up the public pool, which is a massive step down (“They’re wearing sneakers in the pool!”), complete with broken glass, children throwing rocks, and Frank’s pool game of “Grease the Watermelon” (I also like how Frank borrows a towel from one bather by letting him take a bite from his hotdog).

Verizon to Begin Selling Apple’s iPad in Late October

Verizon Wireless stores will begin selling the iPad on October 28 in a move that marks the first time the telecom giant is partnering with Apple — and probably not the last.

Verizon’s 2,000 retail stores will begin carrying the Wi-Fi model of Apple’s iPad bundled with a MiFi wireless modem to gain 3-G access. The data will cost you $20/month for 1GB of data usage. Verizon’s network is based on CDMA technology, which is not compatible with the current iPad hardware, hence the need for a separate standalone modem.

Verizon’s MiFi + iPad bundles will be priced the same as an iPad with built-in 3G connectivity for AT&T’s networks. The 16-GB iPad + MiFI model will cost $630, for example, the same as the 16-GB 3G iPad, $730 for the 32 GB and $830 for the 64GB model.

TV RECAP: ‘The Office: Sex Ed’

Of all the characters in The Office who’d seem prime candidates for an STD, I’d say Creed and Meredith probably top the list. Michael, albeit hopelessly naïve, seems to gravitate toward women more mentally, rather than physically, questionable.

So when he shows up with a cold sore and the rest of the office immediately leaps to the conclusion that it’s the result of herpes, it’s kind of odd. Nevertheless, his condition goes mostly ignored by the rest of the gang save Dwight, who takes it upon himself to oversee Michael’s informing his past exes about his new (though undiagnosed) STD.

First on the list is the love of Michael’s life, Holly, who’s since gone on to a more rational plane, still seeing her current boyfriend AJ and noting that Michael over-romanticized their time together. A bit at a loss for words, he hangs up without delivering the news and moves on to the next, Donna, the bar manager who would be the most likely candidate (if, in fact, Michael actually has an STD).

But the call consists of little more than a quick, “Get tested,” before Michael moves on to meet up with Carol the real-estate agent (played by Steve Carell’s real-life wife Nancy) and Pam’s mother Helene.

Back at the office, Andy decides to host a Sex-Ed/Pizza Jamboree, which devolves into a flimsy list of the good and bad aspects of sex (“Looks cool” is by far the best of the “good”), but it quickly becomes clear that the session is a guise through which Andy hopes to discover whether Gabe and his old flame Erin have or have had sex.
