The Flickcast – Page 608 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ Brings It’s 19th Volume To DVD This November

There aren’t very many science fiction comedies out there that have as much of a long-lasting fan following as Mystery Science Theater 3000. Fans of the show have even followed the series’ stars Michael Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy onto their spinoff venture, RiffTrax.

While RiffTrax is growing in popularity, fans still look to the fine folks at Shout! Factory to release all of their favorite MST3K episodes on DVD in fancy box sets. More recent releases have come with collectible ‘bots to throw up on the shelf, and the most recent release, volume 19, even has an exclusive Gypsy statue to add to that collection. From Shout!

This side-splitting collection of MST3K features the show’s never-before-released episodes Robot Monster, Bride of the Monster, Devil Doll and Devil Fish.  Those entrees come with a side of extras, including a new introduction by J. Elvis Weinstein, cult filmmaker Larry Blamire’s full-fledged geek-out on Robot Monster, new featurettes on Bride of the Monster and Devil Doll, MST3K: Origins and Beyond from CONvergence 2009, original movie trailers, and four exclusive MST3K mini-posters by artist Steve Vance. There might even be an Easter Egg…we’re just sayin’.

The whole box set runs about $70 when it hits the market on November 9th, but that steep price also gets you that fancy Gypsy collectible figurine to go alongside your Crow and Tom Servo figurines. If all of the bots will be collected by volume 19, what special treat do you think we’ll get for the epic 20th volume release next year?

Check out a full image of the box set after the jump, and keep it here on more details surrounding this awesome upcoming release.

Spike TV’s ‘Deadliest Warrior’ Headed to the Big Screen

Paramount has announced that it will bring Spike TV’s popular testosterone laden battle franchise Deadliest Warrior to the big screen. The original program has been one of Spike TV’s most successful shows, and just completed its second season.

A third season is already in the works.  Each week on Deadliest Warrior, two historical (or contemporary) warriors come face to face in a battle to the death, thanks to CGI.

Three commentators with specific fields of knowledge (medical consultant, biomedical scientist, and simulations programmer) provide commentary during each episode.  The show is narrated by Drew Skye.

Information about weapons and skills is fed into a computer program to determine which warrior would actually win the battle in question.  Actors provide dramatization when a character is being introduced.

There is also a spin off called Deadliest Warrior-The Aftermath, which is a round-table discussion that further analyzes each episode and allows fans to posit questions in forums. It is a web-exclusive for Spike TV.

Director and producer Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will be teaming up his 21 Laps Entertainment company with Paramount to produce the film.  No story line has been announced, but it is possible (not confirmed) that Levy might direct.

You can catch full episodes of Deadliest Warrior on Spike TV’s official website.

Ryan Reynolds Is Still Talking About ‘Deadpool’

Though Green Lantern is prepping to be one of the larger superhero flicks of 2011 (in spite of the possible awesomeness of Thor and Captain America), Ryan Reynolds is still sticking to his word and planning on going back to his role as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Reynolds delves into the emotional trauma of the Merc with the Mouth and how much of a mess it will be to get into that character.

Many fans became smitten with him in that role after his performance in the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine last year. Now, Reynolds has wrapped GL, is promoting Buried, and can’t wait to start killing people for money on film.

Here’s what he had to say about Deaadpool:

“It goes in such a different direction than a superhero movie usually goes. It’s a nasty piece of work. It’s just based in so much emotional filth, completely. It’s like ‘Barfly‘ if it were a superhero movie. It sort of treads into the world of an emotionally damaged person.  I always say that Deadpool is a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral…. It’s so different than the superhero movies to date, it departs so far from that.”

First Trailer For ‘The Fighter’ Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale Hits The Web

It may look a bit like Oscar fodder, but the very first trailer for The Fighter starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg has hit the web, and it looks like it could be the next Rocky. At least, that seems to be what it’s going for.

The film comes from David O. Russell, the man who brought us I Heart Huckabees and Three Kings starring George Clooney and Ice Cube. It follows the story of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward as he broke into the sport in the mid 1980s.

The movie pits Bale and Wahlberg together as contentious brothers, who’s tension will drive the film and that looks to be a major appeal from the trailer. Also joining in is Oscar nominee Amy Adams, who plays Wahlberg’s love interest.

This script has been on the shelf for quite some time, with nearly half a dozen rewrites and changed studio hands countless times more. It looks like it’s finally found a home at Paramount and will hit theaters on December 10th.

Check out the first full trailer after the jump.

The Flickcast – Episode 70: Afterlife

This week on The Flickcast Chris and Matt dive into more topics of interest and discuss issues affecting society. No, not really. They mostly just bitch about the current state of Hollywood and the lack of creativity in most studio films.

They also manage to talk about a few other things including upcoming premieres of new and returning TV programs such as Community, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory and Chuck as well as the success and relative merits of the latest Resident Evil franchise film. They also talked about more TV programs this week including James Cameron’s True Lies, Ryan Reynolds returning to TV as a producer and new scripted series coming from MTV.

Of course, Chris and Matt also made some picks this week including Matt’s pick of the 1988 Gary Busey film Bulletproof and Chris’ pick of the new Shawn Ryan TV series Terriers.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.
