Oliver Platt To Play The Man In Black in ‘X-Men: First Class’

With filming set to begin later this month, some of the final pieces of casting for the film X-Men: First Class are falling into place. Joining the recently announced Rose Byrne and Jason Flemyng, Oliver Platt is the newest addition to the start studded cast.

Along with James McAvoy as Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Lucas Till as Havoc, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Kevin Bacon as the villain, Jason Flemyng as Azazel and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, we now have Oliver Platt joining as “The Man in Black”.

Like Kevin Bacon before him, Oliver Platt’s character has yet to be described fully.  So far the only information being released is that Platt will not be playing a mutant character.

Even though I feel that I’m versed in the world of geekdom and comics, I’m not sure who this “Man in Black” character could  be. If he was a mutant, many names come to mind ranging from Black Tom Cassidy to the Black Rook of the Hellfire Club. The moniker may just be a blanket government agent title.

There are still some glaring absences in the list of parts that have been cast. If this film is to mirror the comics at all, we are still missing Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel and Iceman.

Who do you think Platt will play? Who do you think will play the remaining major parts?

X-men: First Class will be released in theaters June 3rd 2011.

‘Lord of the Rings: War in the North’ Gets A New Trailer

Back during our E3 Coverage we revealed the first trailer of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Now, in graphic and bloody detail, Snowblind Studios has revealed the full cinematic trailer detailing the story behind the clips in the initial release. Sent into battle, the threesome of the dwarf warrior, human sorcerer and elf archer take the fight to Sauron’s forces with a head-on assault on one of his base camps.

One thing that stands out about the new trailer compared to the previous Lord of the Rings games which were tied into the Peter Jackson films is how much darker a tone these have and how brutal the imagery is. Limbs are literally being sliced off. Orcs are being shot in the face with arrows. Blood is flowing.

These feel more in tune with some of the epic battles from the movies than what were delivered to the PlayStation 2 titles all those years ago. Snowblind isn’t worried about producing a family friendly title it looks like and for that, they should be applauded.

Take a peek for yourself at the new trailer and let us know what you think about the new title after the jump.

War Movie Mondays: ‘The Great Escape’

The Great Escape (1963) is one of those films that no matter how many times I see it, I find a new way to appreciate it even more. Director John Sturges (Never So Few, The Magnificent Seven) brings to the screen this World War II adventure about allied soldiers who stage one of the greatest massive escapes from a new type of German POW camp.

Steve McQueen (Capt. Virgil “The Cooler King” Hilts), James Garner ( Lt. Robert “The Scrounger” Hendley), Richard Attenborough (Squadron Leader Roger “The Big X” Bartlett), Charles Bronson (Lt. Danny “The Tunnel King” Velinski), James Coburn (Flying Officer Louis “The Manufacturer” Sedgwick) and Donald Pleasence (Lt. Colin “The Forger” Blythe) make up the cast of escape artists.

The German Luftwaffe (Air Force) has created a new type of POW camp in which “all their rotten eggs” can be placed in one heavily guarded basket. Allied POWs have been gathered from all stockades in Germany and are brought to Stalag Luft III outside of Sagan, Germany. The new camp commandant, Col. von Luger (Hannes Messemer) informs the new prisoners that there will be no escape attempts and if any try they will be executed. The senior allied officer, Group Captain Ramsey (James Donald) tells the commandant that it is the sworn duty of every prisoner to try and escape.

Von Luger feels comfortable that the new facility will make it impossible for any to escape. Within the first few minutes of arriving in the camp, the main characters begin probing for weaknesses among the camp’s guards, the wire, and the conning towers which overlook everyone and everything within the camp. Several make attempts to try and escape but are quickly discovered and prove to be a handful for their captors.

The most notable of these attempts is perpetrated by Capt Hilts (McQueen), an American flier who throws his baseball over the “wire of death” which is erected in front of the camp perimeter fence. Hilts informs one of his fellow American inmates that between the two towers at night, makes it almost impossible for them to see someone trying to cut through the fence. He is discovered by one guard and is shot at by another in one of the towers.

Both ‘Star Wars’ Trilogies to Get Blu Ray Box Sets, Deleted Scene from ‘Jedi’ Screened

In case you haven’t heard of the Star Wars Celebration, it’s a semi-yearly official Lucasfilm event that travels the world, celebrating all things Star Wars. This year, the 5th such event was held August 12-15 in Orlando FL and was timed to mark the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.

Culminating the event’s four days of parties, featuring cast and crew celebrities, fans, costumes, music, live entertainment, autographs, collectibles, and a myriad of Star Wars panels, was Saturday’s ‘Main Event’ featuring an hour-long one-on-one discussion between George Lucas and Comedy Central’s king of fake news, John Stewart. During their give and take, some rather big news was dropped on fans in attendance.

Lucas announced that both Star Wars trilogies would be getting the full Blu-ray box set treatment next year. Fans have been clamoring for high-definition Star Wars goodness for some time, though it would seem they still have a while to wait, as the box sets are set to release sometime in Fall 2011. No exact date was set, nor were prices for the box sets announced. However what was announced was that in addition to the standard cast commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and retrospectives, fans will also be treated to some amazing deleted scenes.

To get a taste of what’s in store for next year, be sure to hit the jump and check out an especially cool deleted scene from Return of the Jedi. In this deleted scene we see Luke building a replacement lightsaber  in a cave somewhere on Tattooine. As he works, C3-P0 appears to stand guard outside while Vader and the Emperor attempt to locate him using the force. Enjoy!

Rooney Mara Is Lisbeth Salander In ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’

After a parade of Hollywood A-list actresses openly campaigned for the highly sought after role of Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo book series, a relative unknown ended up being cast. Sony is reporting that actress Rooney Mara has been chosen to portray the prickly, troubled character.

Rooney Mara has worked with director David Fincher before, on the upcoming fall release The Social Network. She appeared in Youth in Revolt and played Nancy in the recent remake of  Nightmare on Elm Street.

Acting runs in the family, sister Kate Mara has appeared in Brokeback Mountain, 24, Entourage, and Iron Man 2. This is a role with huge potential.  The movie will most certainly lead to sequels, as there are three books in the  wildly popular “Girl” series written by Stieg Larsson.  To date, the trilogy of books has sold over 40 Million copies worldwide.

The (anti) herione of the series is a deeply troubled, but brilliant, computer hacker boasting a plethora of tattoos, shorn locks and a seriously hard edge. Mara looks a little too soft and lovely for the role, but I am sure they can toughen her up a bit.

Fincher must be convinced, because everyone has auditioned for the role, including Scarlett Johansson, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, and Natalie Portman. This has been referred to as the biggest casting quest since the search for Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind. Mara will play opposite Daniel Craig in the film which expects to shoot later this year for a 2011 release.

Review: ‘Countdown to Zero’

One of the few documentaries ever to show at Cannes, granted a private screening for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the agitprop activist documentary Countdown to Zero delivers a blast from a collective past when the threat of nuclear annihilation loomed like a gigantic mushroom cloud over the horizon.

Nowadays that threat feels obsolete, something left behind long ago with duck-and-cover drills, double-knit polyester pants suits and Charlie’s Angels posters, existing in the 21st century only as a creaky plot device in action movies. Countdown to Zero flattens that misapprehension to the ground, presenting an all-too-vivid picture of our still insanely nuclear-weaponized world. If that doesn’t sound so appealing, be assured that the filmmakers have sweetened the medicine with incredible access, footage, graphics and visual effects that make the message gripping, even (although one hesitates to use the word) entertaining.

The film begins with footage of Robert Oppenheimer, the director of WWII’s “Manhattan Project,” the brilliant theoretical physicist who let the genie out of the bottle, the eternal bearer of the awful epithet “father of the atomic bomb.” His desolate eyes haunt the film like a specter, bearing witness to his post-war advocacy of nuclear disarmament (which got him the thanks of security clearance stripping and blacklisting).

This gravity is quickly countered by the jubilant celebrations of country after country who thereafter develop nuclear weapon capability for themselves. Crowds cheer, strangers hug, de Gaulle crows, “Our national glory is restored!” Walter Cronkite intones the phrase “membership in the nuclear club,” and it’s a club everyone wants to join. “We will make the bomb even if we have to eat grass,” Pakistani leaders vow, and when they succeed, devout citizens rejoice, “Allah is great!” Sobering and terrifying as it is to see the world map click into the nuclear red country by country, it’s hard to counter with much conviction when Irani president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad argues against western hypocrisy, “Why should only you have it?”

Exclusive: Ken Marino Talks ‘Children’s Hospital’, Possible ‘State’ Reunion

Last night, a brand new season of Adult Swim’s new irreverent hospital drama/comedy Children’s Hospital premiered, and we’re so excited for the new season, that we’re bringing you an ENTIRE WEEK of exclusive interviews with the show’s cast and creators.

Up first is star Ken Marino, who plays Dr. Glenn Richie on the show. Many fans of comedy know Marino from his start as an original cast member of MTV’s The State. Marino went on to do some other great comedies such as Party Down and The 10. He even wrote 2008’s stand out comedy Role Models starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott.

Ken plays his role as Dr. Richie a little bit like his character in The 10: very loose and very Jewish. We got the chance to talk with Marino about his character, the ill-fated Party Down and the possibility of a State Reunion.

Check out the full interview after the jump, and be sure to keep it here all week, as we celebrate the return of Children’s Hospital on Adult Swim.
