Movie Review: ‘Lone Survivor’

Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor is a movie that does itself a few large disservices: Its title reveals too much; its trailer is much too long and plays like quick spot on an On Demand showcase; and it tugs and shoves and pulls in so many directions, that it ends up seeming unsure of both its strengths and its point.

There’s a decent and well-crafted movie in there, but the marketing, and a good deal of the film itself, tend to be dissuasive.

Survivor, if you haven’t seen the trailer, chronicles the story of SEAL Team 10’s somewhat disastrous Operation Red Wings, a 2005 mission with the objective of assassinating Taliban leader Ahmad Shah during the Afghanistan war.

Mark Wahlberg plays SO1 Marcus Luttrell, the titular Lone Survivor and author of the book on which the film is based, and his story is indeed an interesting, even uplifting one, and director Peter Berg shoots it with an apparent grittiness and shakiness that you would expect. Wahlberg plays haggard and weary well. Impassioned well. Sorrowful well.

Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, and Eric Bana, as his team, convey the sense of golden brotherhood that makes films like these sustainable. The story, while short, is compelling, and the second act of Wahlberg’s survival is an interesting twist. It’s a decent film, and if you’re in the mood for a good war drama, this is safe bet.

But…

What’s the point? This doesn’t need to be a political film; it doesn’t need to justify its war or its mission or, on the opposite end, attack it. And it doesn’t. Nor does it need to go far beyond what it does well, which is action. It’s not spectacular or very original, it even seems too polished in its sterile dirt. However, the biggest flaw, which nearly becomes an insult, at least to me, is what I want to describe as the film’s lack of faith in itself, but which I should really, if I’m being honest, is its pandering.

Check This Out: Trailer for ‘Call of Duty’ Championship 2014

cod-ghosts-5

There’s no doubt the Call of Duty gaming franchise is one of the most popular and most successful in history. Since the original Call of Duty launched for the PC in 2003, there’s been a succession of sequels and spin-offs that have helped define what a “next generation” game title can be while breaking sales records in the process.

It may not come as a surprise that some Call of Duty players take the game very seriously. So seriously, in fact, there’s a championship tournament played throughout the world to see just who the best is. And that tournament is coming up soon.

But before that, we’ve got a trailer. After the break, of course. Look for all the details on the tournament right here.

TV RECAP: ‘Agents of Shield’ Episode 111: ‘The Magical Place’

Agents of Shield 111

Shield captures an alien artifact dealer, Vanchat, thinking he may know where Centipede is holding Coulson, as the type of artifact he was trying to fence is the same used by Centipede. While Director Hand is debriefing the team, an alert comes up about a breach in the system. Skye is trying to find the money trail from Vanchat to Centipede.

Hand wants Skye thrown off the plane, and May agrees that Skye is of no value to them on the plane. Everyone watching (but not Ward and Skye) realize this is a ploy to get her off the plane so she can have free reign to investigate as she pleases.  Ward and Fitz/Simmons allow Skye to escape before her debriefing.

Skye still has her scrambler bracelet on, so she is still unable to access any type of internet connection. She reads an article in a magazine about a local billionaire (Lloyd Rathman) who is under investigation and decides she can get him to help her. It made very little sense watching, and makes maybe even less sense now.

She manages to hang out at his office building until he arrives, and steals his car without any of the valets noticing. However, she has the bracelet, so she still can’t even use the GPS in his card. A well-placed advertisement for Onstar gives her the idea to crash the car and tell the Onstar representative to tow the car to “her house.”

Get Your First Look at ‘The Punisher’ #1

The_Punisher_1_Cover-crop

If there’s one character who deserves a better big screen treatment, it’s The Punisher. Not that the previous two movies were bad, they just weren’t as good as the more recent Marvel movies like Iron Man or The Avengers. And that’s a shame.

Fortunately, Marvel continues to feature the character in comics. And coming this February:

Frank Castle’s one-man-war on crime continues in an all-new THE PUNISHER #1 – from the explosive creative team of Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads! For years, the Punisher has called New York City his home – keeping a watchful eye on the city through the sight of a gun.

Sound good so far. To get you more interested, we’ve got previews of the upcoming comic. But before that, here’s a bit more about it from Marvel:

When a lead on a major source of drugs, weapons, and more leads Frank out west – he sets his sights on Los Angeles. And the City of Angels isn’t ready for a devil like the Punisher! But not everything is as it appears, and Frank will soon find himself toe-to-toe with a highly trained military strike force known only as the 131! Who are the mysterious 131? And why are they out for the Punisher’s head?

Check out the previews after the break. Look for The Punisher #1 to arrive in stores, and digital, on February 5.

Gunnar Optiks Unveils New INTERCEPT Colors Line

Intercept Color Collection

We’ve all been there. Either a marathon day of Call of Duty online at launch, just cranking through those final levels of Grand Theft Auto even though it is 2 AM, or that all day guild raid in World of Warcraft, every one of us has spent too many hours in a single sitting playing games.

At the time it seems like a great idea but then almost immediately after, the pounding headache starts. You don’t realize it until it’s too late but you have strained the hell out of your eyes and now you’re going to suffer until the next morning. But there are solutions better than “playing less” because screw that, that’s not an option. Gunnar glasses actually work.

Gunnar lists all their benefits below that you can check out but they’ve also unveiled their latest series, the Intercept line. The current pair I have looks kind of bookwormish but this latest line actually looks like something I would wear out on a nice California weekend. As you’ll see in the pics below, there are a number of different color frames to get your personality out. You know, to all the people not seeing you sitting at home playing games.
