First Trailer for ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’ Goes Live

As we previously reported, Lara Croft is making her return to gaming this summer. But even though she’s no longer under the Tomb Raider moniker, don’t think Lara is changing her MO. She is still going through dark underground lairs in search of treasure.

But this game will not be a full retail release. Instead it will be a digital download only game. In addition, gameplay will drastically be changing as it takes a 3/4 overhead view which resembles a dual stick shooter than a traditional third person action platformer.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light stars Lara Croft as she discovers the lost Temple of Light, resting place of the ancient artifact the Mirror of Smoke. When she finally reaches the mirror, she is ambushed by a devious Mercenary named Vasco and his army. Vasco steals the mirror and releases the evil Xololt who was imprisoned in the mirror.

As you will see in the trailer after the jump, Lara isn’t alone as she teams up with Totec in her first ever cooperative adventure. Hopefully Totec doesn’t whine about his wife the whole game like Dom insists on in Gears of War. It’s refreshing to see Crystal Dynamics attempt to take this series in a new direction much like Ensemble Studios did to the Halo franchise with Halo Wars.

While keeping to the core mythology, they created a drastically different gaming experience still keyed in on what players loved about the Halo world. We are hoping to see the same with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

CBS May Air Twitter Sensation ‘$#*! My Dad Says,’ Shatner to Play Lead

With over 1.3 million followers, the popular Twitter account ‘$#*! My Dad Says‘ would seem a natural for a book deal, but a network TV show? No double take is necessary, because not only has the hardcover version of collected material from Justin Halpern’s Twitter account hit the New York Times best sellers list, CBS has announced it may pick up the show for its fall comedy line-up.

Halpern, 29, lives with his 74-year-old father and chronicles his words of advice, rants and everything in between on Twitter. His father’s foul-mouthed wisdom cuts deep, but rings hilariously true, even if at Justin’s expense. The elder Halpert’s one-liners seem a natural fit for Twitter’s forced brevity, but one has to wonder how it will transition to the small screen.

Interestingly, the pilot starred William Shatner and Ryan Devlin, however sources are indicating that Devlin may be re-cast when (or if) the series heads to air. Justin had something to do with the casting, elaborating on his choice to the Chicago Sun-Times. “I pushed for Mr. Shatner,” Halpern said. “He’s been fantastic. He’s like my dad in that he says what he wants to say when he wants to say it.”

CBS is expected to announce their full fall schedule this Wednesday.

Latest ‘Singularity’ Trailer Arrives

I’ve been waiting for this game since I first saw some previews for it at last year’s E3 show in Los Angeles. And now, thanks to our friends at Activision, we have the first in a four-part trailer series for Singularity to share with you today. This trailer features the age and revert function of the Time Manipulation Device and how it works within the game’s environment. This looks like an awesome game full of fun, exciting ways to snuff out your enemies.

In case you’re not familiar with the game (or just don’t want to click a link), it revolves around a mysterious island known as “Katorga-12″ where Russian experiments involving element “E99″ took place during the height of the Cold War. A catastrophe known as the “Singularity” occurred on the island. In the game you are Nate Renko, an Air Force pilot who is sent to investigate radiation emissions coming from the island, only to crash land there.

After regaining consciousness, Nate finds the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) and discovers that the island is constantly shifting between 1950 and 2010. Renko’s goal is to find his co-pilot, escape the island and eventually prevent the Singularity from occurring and potentially destroying not only the island, but the entire human race.

I, for one, cannot wait for it. It looks awesome. Singularity ships for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on June 26th. Until then, check out the trailer after the jump. By clicking through, you certify you are 18 years of age or older.

David Fincher Goes ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’

Get ready for some cool undersea adventure as Disney is about to go 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with director David Fincher. Previously, the studio had been talking with Charlie’s Angels helmer McG about taking on the pic, but that didn’t end up happening.

Now, Disney has decided that the film might need a fresher approach and is going after Fight Club‘s Fincher to direct and Bourne Ultimatum scribe Scott Z. Burns to write the script. The project reportedly came together after Fincher approached Disney and said he wanted to tackle a big “tentpole” project for the studio and something different from his usual dark, R-rated films.

In case you’re not familiar with the story, it is based on a novel by Jules Verne, first published in 1869, and tells the story of a group of men who encounter a vengeful scientist names Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus. Plus, if you remember the first Disney version of the film, which is a classic by most standards, there’s also a giant squid the men, including a young Kirk Douglas, must fight in order to survive.

Last year, Disney was fast-tracking a $150 Million Leagues that would have served as an origin story for Nemo. But that film was canceled after a regime-change at the studio. Now, Disney wants to get back in the Nemo business and this new film, even though plotlines are still a secret, will reportedly be more like Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

Not sure exactly what that means, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Maybe it means Nemo has a son and they have family issues? Could be.

Fox Announces Fall Schedule

Much like NBC did today, the Fox network also had its very own upfront party and revealed the shows that will make up its new Fall schedule later this year. This fall, Fox will pair top drama House with new Texas oil soap Lonestar on Mondays.

The network will launch a comedy block on Tuesdays anchored by the returning Glee. Wednesdays will see Lie to Me and Hell’s Kitchen together. Thursdays will continue pretty much the same with Bones and Fringe. On Fridays (the traditional “death slot” for network shows), Fox plans to air Human Target, which will lead into its upcoming summer drama The Good Guys.

You may also notice that Steven Spielberg’s Terra Nova, which tells the story of a family from the future that travels back in time to prehistoric earth, isn’t on the schedule. However, the network confirmed the show will start midseason along with comedies Bob’s Burgers and Mixed Signals.

TV RECAP: ‘Breaking Bad: Kafkaesque’

Kafkaesque: The adjective refers to anything suggestive of Kafka, especially his nightmarish style of narration, in which characters lack a clear course of action, the ability to see beyond immediate events, and the possibility of escape. The term’s meaning has transcended the literary realm to apply to real-life occurrences and situations that are incomprehensibly complex, bizarre, or illogical.

In this 9th episode of the current season, we get a blessed reprieve from all the frenetic madness.  This episode was contemplative and character driven.  Ironically, despite its title, I found it to be one of the least bizarre shows of the season.

“Kafkaesque” delivers another great title sequence.  We get to see an awesome commercial for Pollos chicken, where we see images of  mouthwatering fried chicken set against the story of the “chicken robbers.”, the original founders of Pollos.  This advertisement is juxtaposed against scenes of Jesse and Walt churning out boxes of Meth.  Their Meth bags go into vats of “fry batter” that is distributed to Gus’s stores.

War Movie Mondays: ‘Hamburger Hill’

Hamburger Hill (1987) is an intensely, well acted Vietnam War movie which shows seasoned combat troops at their very best. The film follows a group of men of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division as they are ordered to assault a hill fortification of Vietnamese trenches and bunkers from May 10,-20, 1969.

The troops of the 3rd Battalion nicknamed Hill 937 “Hamburger Hill” because it chewed men up like a meat grinder. In fact, according to military historians, the battle for “Hamburger Hill” was one of the last major ground battles fought in Vietnam before American personnel became downsized due to the unable to be won nature of the war, and against America’s enemies.

The film stars a group of up and coming actors, many who went on to becoming huge stars including Dylan McDermott (SSgt. James Frantz), Steven Weber (Sfc. Dennis Worcester), Courtney B. Vance (Spc. Abraham “Doc” Johnson), Michael Boatman (Pvt. Ray Motown), and a young Don Cheadle as (Pvt. Johnny Washburn).

One of the main reasons I have always enjoyed this film is because it shows the hardships, camaraderie, and the dedication that each of these men had for each other while facing some of the most brutal combat in the war. The main characters open up to one another and begin to learn about each others lives as well as what their plans are when they get out of the war.

Joss Whedon On Directing This Week’s ‘Glee’

Since its return in April, Glee has taken a different approach by having an overall theme throughout each song in an episode. One week was saying “hello”, while another week talked about “home.” That theme carries on with this week’s episode entitled “Dream On.”

Not only does the title insinuate that we’ll get some possibly great songs, but fan favorite Joss Whedon is stepping in to direct, and he’s bringing Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog‘s  Neil Patrick Harris in to play Mr. Schuester’s (Matthew Morrison) arch nemesis.

Whedon is apparently a closet Gleek, and couldn’t wait to take on this opportunity. This can only mean he’ll be stepping up his game and bringing us other Gleeks a truly memorable episode.
