Comedy Central Cancels ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’

Sad news for fans of The Sarah Silverman Program as Comedy Central has finally given the show the axe after three seasons. The show had been bounced back and forth in just about every possible timeslot over the past three years, but still wasn’t able to pull the ratings that the comedy cable network was hoping for.

The final deathblow was Comedy Centra’sl change of the show’s timeslot to Fridays at 10:30PM. Apparently it was hoping for an audience that either owned DVR’s or had no social lives. Co-creator Dan Harmon should be OK with the news, as he’s got a hit NBC series to cry about with Community. Rob Schrab may be a different story.

The series hit an all-time high last season with record ratings and even an Emmy nomination to lead Silverman. It seems that in a world where fans can squeeze another season out of networks with the power of Twitter (see Chuck and Dollhouse) they were no match to Comedy Central’s final word on the matter.

The network still plans to air reruns of the show until the broadcast contract is up at the end of the year, but beyond that, you will have to take solace in the first three season of The Sarah Silverman Progam on DVD.

DVD Review: ‘Edge of Darkness’ Blu-ray

When this Mel Gibson starrer came to theaters, I didn’t get a chance to see it so my first exposure to it was on Blu-ray. I won’t go into a full review of the film here (I’ll leave that to our own Shannon Hood) but suffice it to say I liked director Martin Campbell’s mix of cop procedural, revenge tale and conspiracy thriller. Gibson plays Boston Detective Thomas Craven who’s daughter is brutally murdered right in front of his eyes after a rather brief homecoming.

This horrific act spurs Gibson’s character on a path of revenge and a quest for justice that takes him in many different directions as he crosses paths with all manner of characters. Of course, things are not as they seem and the crime is not s simple assassination gone wrong, nor was Craven the target as everyone, except him, suspect.

During the course of his investigation Craven discovers a wider conspiracy that leads to the power corridors of the highest levels of government. Into this mix comes Ray Winstone’s Jedburg, a shadow operative who ‘s motivations and loyalties are unclear.

Is he a friend or foe and who does he work for? These questions arise as the film progresses and as Craven and Jedburg have several scenes together. Even though the other actors in the film, including Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic, are quite good, Gibson and Winstone elevate their scenes together and make this movie, at times, a real pleasure to watch.

‘Dust to Dust’ Prequel to Philip K. Dick’s ‘Electric Sheep’ Hits the iPad

Dust to DustIt’s been a long time since Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep hit the shelves in 1968 and inspired a generation of Sci-Fi fans. In the novel, Dick imagined a post-apocalyptic world wherein earth and much of its population have been decimated by nuclear fallout after a massive world war.

Most animals were either forced into extinction or are now extremely rare due to the radiation poisoning resulting from this so-called World War Terminus. The book’s plotline follows the protagonist, Rick Deckard as a police bounty hunter, racing through a near-future San Francisco on the trail of six dangerous androids.

Many of us Sci-Fi fanatics know this story intimately from Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece, Blade Runner. Now, almost thirty years later, writer Chris Roberson and artist Robert Adler have imagined a prequel that will be available for the iPad in comic form. Taking place immediately after World War Terminus ends, the problems with artificial life – androids – become apparent.

The government decides they must become targets, hunted down, but who will do the dirty work? Two men are assigned: Malcolm Reed, a ‘special’ human with the power to feel others’ emotions, and Charlie Victor, who’s the perfect man for the job – or is he? Meanwhile Samantha Wu, a Stanford biologist, fights to save the last of the world’s animals.

Go Behind The Scenes With 4 Featurettes From The ‘Legion’ Blu-Ray

Hitting stores everywhere today, Screen Gems’ Legion will be taking the Earth by storm in the form of DVD and Blu-Ray. Originally in theaters back in January, the action-thriller brought about the apocalypse with a cool “God purging the world of it’s disease” storyline, some cool zombie/demonic baddies, and an epic showdown between angels Michael (Paul Bettany) and Gabriel (LOST’s Kevin Durand).

Directed by visual effects artist Scott Stewart, the film fills out its cast with some great talent like Dennis Quaid, Private Practice’s Kate Walsh, Tyrese Gibson, Adrianne Palicki, and American Gothic’s Lucas Black. As part of the Blu-Ray release, we’ve got some great clips from the disc’s features to show you.

Dennis Quaid delves into the troubles of his character, Bob, Paul Bettany talks about doing (just about) all of his own stunts, and we see exactly how the production crew got the 60+ year old Jeannette Miller to hang from a ceiling.

Check out the clips after the jump, and pick up Legion on Blu-Ray or DVD today.

First Trailer for ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ Hits the Web

Back in 2008, Playstation 3’s LittleBigPlanettook took the world by storm with it’s innovative gameplay and ability to essentially create your own video game to share and challenge other players across the globe.

The plot of the game was pretty simple: you’re a tiny sock character who goes through a gigantic world, solving puzzles, uncovering secrets, and collecting points to buy more add-ons. The true beauty of the game lied with the ability to create full levels and set them loose in the real world for other people to try out and play. The game sold nearly 500,000 copies between the US and UK alone, making it one of the highest grossing PS3 games of all time.

Now, barely2 years later, Media Molocule is doing it again, but this time on an even bigger scale, with LittleBigPlanet 2.The new game boasts itself as a “Platform for Games” as opposed to the first being a platformer. The game is said to be 100% backwards compatible with the first game, giving players complete run of over 2 million user-created levels.

The game is on a much larger scale, and upgrades the customization feature nearly 4-fold. The ability to create non-playable AI characters in each of your custom levels is a new feature as well as millions of new additions to the original list of customizable options. Fans can now also compose their own score and play director with a new film-shooting feature.

Take a look at the brand new trailer for LittleBigPlanet after the jump, featuring an awesome tune from Passion Pit, and keep it here as we bring you more news leading up to it’s release later this year.

Apple Confirms AT&T iPhone Exclusivity Until 2012

When the iPhone made its debut in 2007 everyone knew it would be an exclusive to AT&T for some time. The exact length of that exclusive agreement was rumored to be five years but it was never possible to get confirmation on the exact terms of the agreement from any of the parties involved, especially Apple. That is, until now.

Based on court papers filed in 2007 as part of an ongoing class-action lawsuit in California which claims Apple and AT&T illegally exerted a monopoly over iPhone service by telling customers the iPhone’s required service contract was two years long when the Apple / AT&T exclusivity deal was actually for five years, there’s now some light to be shed on the deal.

Responding to the lawsuit, Apple’s lawyers argued that no one was ever promised an unlocked iPhone after two years and they repeatedly confirm the existence of the five-year agreement while noting it was publicly reported in USA Today.

The 12:01 ‘Iron Man 2’ Screening Was Magically Marvelous

Many, many moons ago I recall waiting with a bunch of my geeky and not-so-geeky high school pals in a never-ending line around the block for the  highly-anticipated 12:01 showing of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was a showing at our local theater, before the days of stadium seating and online ticketing. I remember that the film held a certain magic in the hours before it started.

Energy was buzzing all around us. While waiting, my friends and I played poker, tossed a football, answered trivia from boys dressed as Jedi Knights, and talked about which starship would win in a battle. Anyone who goes to Comic-Con’s geekest panel of them all, “Starship Smackdown”, knows the Millennium Falcon has been taken out of the running for winning one too many times.

But, I digress. There was excitement, magic, and a new hope that this film would be great. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed. As were many others that day.

As I waited for my friend to arrive at the 12:01 Arclight Hollywood Dome showing of Iron Man 2, I recalled those days with a bit of nostalgia. As I looked around the theater, I realized the movie-going experience had evolved.
