Pixar’s Brad Bird Possibly Directing ‘Mission Impossible IV’

Tom Cruise and company were all pretty quick to jump onto and set a release date for the upcoming fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise. The only problem was that the film had yet to sign a director. Who could possibly take the helm after sci-fi meganerd J.J. Abrams shared his vision in the last film. Well, according to THR, the studio’s number one choice is Incredibles director Brad Bird.

On the surface, Bird may seem a peculiar choice. The writer-director wrote and directed 1999’s “The Iron Giant” and 2004’s “The Incredibles” as well as 2007’s “Ratatouille” (the latter two earned Oscars for best animated picture), but he has never helmed a live-action feature.

On the other hand, nabbing Bird would be inspired. He is praised for his storytelling skills and is known for his strengths in staging thrilling and intricate action set-pieces as well as fusing the action with large dollops of heart and emotion.

Bird is just one name thrown into the hat along with others such as Edgar Wright and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. Brad seems the be at least Cruise’s top pick in the list.

Check Out A Preview of Tonight’s ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’

I’m going to come out and say I’ve got a geek crush on Sarah Silverman. Sure, she may not be what some people would think of as hot, but her combination of looks, brains and humor make for a deadly mix indeed — at least in my humble opinion. I just know she would be great to hang out with and obviously, her mind is probably right there in the gutter along with mine. What more could you ask for in a woman?

So, it is with great interest that I watch her tv series on Comedy Central, aka The Sarah Silverman Program. And now, we’ve got a little preview of tonight’s episode for you right here. In the preview, Sarah feels that Steve’s request to see a jam band puts a strain on their friendship. But then he plays the favor card and things go wrong from there.

The Sarah Silverman Program airs tonight at 12am / 11c on Comedy Central. Until then, check out the preview after the jump.

SXSW Interview: ‘Elektra Luxx’ Director Sebastian Gutierrez

I first became aware of director Sebastian Gutierrez when I watched one of his first films, She Creature. I’ve followed his career since that time and watched most of his other movies with interest. His latest, Elektra Luxx, the sequel to his ealier film Women In Touble, chronicles the exploits of former porn star trying to change her life now that she’s discovered she’s going to be a mother.

I caught up with Gutierrez during the recent SXSW Film Festival where his film screened to a packed audience, not once, but twice. Here’s what he had to say about the film, his creative process and working with his movie star wife Carla Gugino.

The Flickcast: This film is a sequel of sorts to your earlier film Women in Trouble, correct? Was your plan always to make a sequel to that film? I also heard you are actually going for a trilogy, correct?

Sebastian Gutierrez: Yes, it’s a trilogy. We felt that Star Wars, LOTR, etc. shouldn’t be the only stories allowed to spread out over three movies and thought we’d compete with them.

TF: If you had to tell someone who had never seen Women In Trouble what Elektra Luxx is about, what would you tell them?

SG: It’s about one day in the life of a recently retired pornstar as she tries to make it in the straight world.

TF: How did you approach making the film? Was their a complete script or was some of the film improvised?

Angela Bassett To Play Amanda Waller In ‘Green Lantern’

With principle photography currently taking place in New Orleans, things seem to be picking up quite a bit for Martin Campbell’s upcoming Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds. We haven’t heard much in the way of casting lately, until now. According to THR, actress Angela Bassett is now stepping in to play the famed DC secret government employee Amanda Waller:

Bassett is playing Dr. Amanda Waller, a government agent who in comics lore became charged with overseeing the Suicide Squad, a government-run group of captured supervillains performing tasks in exchange for eventual freedom. It is unclear if that group will pop up in “Lantern” or if that mythology is being set up.

Could this mean we’ll be getting into the Suicide Squad story in Green Lantern? It would make sense, if Warner Bros wants to compete directly with Marvel’s plan to keep all of the films intertwined, to use Bassett’s Amanda Waller as their Nick Fury, being a constant in upcoming DC films.

Between casting Bassett in Green Lantern, and Pam Grier taking on the same role on the CW’s Smallville, it seems that casting agents are looking to change the role from John Ostrander’s original, portly incarnation of the character to more of a sultry, cougar-esque woman of power.

Western Wednesdays: ‘Rio Conchos’

The fun part of Western Wednesdays is discovering little gems like Rio Conchos that were lost in the shuffle of giants like John Wayne.  Lacking any big stars or cult iconography like Django’s coffin, they just sit on Netflix waiting for someone to dig them up.

Rio Conchos is a slow burn of a movie, more of a Western noir than a real shoot ’em up. Everyone has an agenda, no one can be trusted, and you’re just not sure who is going to screw it all up and make off like a bandit. It also starts off rather typical with the usual trope of “There’s been a raid, a bunch of rifles are missing, and they’re going to wind up in the hands of Apaches!”

Naturally, a disparate bunch of men are assigned the task of tracking down the rifles — a bitter ex-Confederate (Richard Boone), a Buffalo Soldier (Jim Brown), an ambitious Army Captain (Stuart Whitman), and a smooth-talking Mexican mercenary (Tony Franciosa). Of course, they don’t get along. The ex-Confederate makes no secret of his dislike of blue coats or black men, and while they come to a grudging understanding and respect, they never really become friends.
