The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Lobo’, ‘Buffy’, ‘Psylocke’ and More

Welcome to The Pull List Comic Reviews! First off, a huge thanks to John Carle for covering the column last week, he did a fantastic job. Make sure you check out The Flickcast’s podcast this week where he was also a guest-host! The dude’s everywhere. Okay, on with the comics. As always, WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

PULL OF THE WEEK:

lhth1Lobo: Highway to Hell #1 (of 2) – DC Comics – $6.99 US
Writer: Scott Ian Artist: Sam Keith
Score: 8.5

You’re sitting there, asking yourself “How in all that is holy is Lobo: Highway to Hell the Pull of the Week?” Believe me, I’m asking myself that very same question. You see I’ve never dug Lobo. I’ve read a good chunk of his various issues over the years and I’ve never seen the attraction to the character, but seeing as variety is the spice of life, I figured I’d give this a shot. The premise sounded interesting enough…

Lobo’s chillin’ at home when he receives a message – in the form of slain dolphins – from the big bad himself: the Devil. Even though the Main Man has been banished from Hell for quite awhile now, he figures it’s time to go on a road trip and pay a not-so-friendly visit to his old pal, Beelzebub. Along the way everyone’s favorite Czarnian runs into more violence, mayhem, booze and floozy “women” than he can shake a stick at, but what happens when he finally comes face to face with the cutest evil… waitaminute… CUTE?!?

He hasn’t had a starring role since 2007’s Batman/Lobo: Deadly Serious, so when DC Comics dusted the mothballs off of the character, they decided to get a fresh take on him. Enter Scott Ian, the guitarist for the band Anthrax. Ian’s first foray into comic writing is pretty decent, but it’s how he handles the title character that blew me away. There was just enough here to add weight to the usual aloofness that the character normally projects, which clicked beautifully. While the big payoff will be next issue’s finale, so far this has been a very enjoyable ride.

The Maxx creator Sam Keith, who had both writing and artistic duties on the aforementioned 2007 mini-series, makes his return to the character. Bringing his distinctive style that is every bit as manic as Lobo is, the art looks great, even while juggling different levels of detail throughout the issue. From what I could tell, the creative team looked like they catered to each other’s strengths, culminating in a fun romp that became our Pull of the Week.

Magneto Announced as Final Character Added to ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2’

PR04With the first full downloadable character pack for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 hitting the Xbox Live Arcade later today, the final character has also been announced, which will round out the five-character bundle. That character is none other than the Master of Magnetism, Magneto.

It was rumored that Magneto was going to be added to the game after a tester leaked the info a few weeks back, but this is the first actual confirmation we’ve received from the game developers. The character will have more telekinetic and energy-based powers for you to toy with in the game, which should be a nice addition to your roster.

Magneto tops off the five-character bundle (consisting of Carnage, Psylocke, Cable, and Black Panther), which can be picked up on the Xbox Live Arcade later today for 800 Microsoft Points (or roughly $9.99). There is also the opportunity to purchase Juggernaut as a downloadable character for only $1.99, as well. Both packages will be available on the PlayStation Network on November 12.

Check out the full image of Magneto as well as a few action shots after the jump, and be sure to keep it here for more Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 news as it comes to us.

John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker See ‘Red’

mary-louise-parker-john-c-reillyAccording to THR’s Heat Vision Blog, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker are now in negotiations to join the cast of Red, Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries written by Jon and Erich Hoeber and being directed by Robert Schwentke. If they do end up signing up for the film, they will join a cast that already includes Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren.

Originally published in 2003 and 2004, Red was co-created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hammer. It centers on a former black-ops agent Paul Moses (Bruce Willis), now in retirement, who has to contend with younger, more high-tech assassins who want to kill him and keep his former exploits from going public. Naturally, the first hit squad fails and alerts Moses that he’s being targeted. So, he goes on the offensive in order to stay alive.

If cast, Reilly would play a retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him. Parker would play Willis’ character’ love interest, a federal pension worker who becomes embroiled in the Willis character’s struggle to stay alive. Red is expected to begin filming in January in Toronto with an projected release later in 2010.

Uncover the Secrets of Suresh’s Work On ‘Heroes’

suresh and sonIf you watched Monday’s episode of Heroes, which was a pretty good one, you know that it featured Mohinder Suresh’s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) long-awaited return to the show. But the question still remains: What is Samuel’s plan for him and why is Hiro so annoying now? Well, that first one is a real question anyway. Hiro isn’t that annoying.

While you ponder those question, we’ve got a bunch of clips for you that will potentially help you discover some of the answers about Suresh, Smauel, Hiro and the mysterious past and origins of all your favorite characters. These clips feature Mohinder’s father, Chandra Suresh, at Coyote Sands research camp. He was doing research at the camp, you may remember, during last season’s episode “1961” and what he is doing there may hold the key to mysteries only hinted at until now.

Watch the videos after the jump and see if you can decipher Chandra’s work and discoveries. Heroes is on Tuesday nights at 8/7C on NBC.

First Look at James Marsters In ‘Caprica’

James-Marsters-CapricaOver at the blog run by the network formerly known as Sci-Fi, they have a new trailer for the upcoming series Caprica featuring a glimpse, albeit a brief one, of James Marsters in character as terrorist leader Barnabus Greeley. Not sure I’m in love with that name yet, sorry Jane.

Anyway, this is one of those situations where if you blink, look away or sneeze, you will miss Marsters’ appearance. Still, its kinda cool to seem him and know that the premiere of Caprica is only a short two months (or so) away. Plus, his “Someone’s dying today” line is also pretty darn cool. Also, there’s some other stuff in the trailer that’s worth watching so do, please, watch it — after the ever-present jump of course.

Caprica, featuring the cool James Marsters as well as Eric Stolz, Esai Morales, Sasha Roiz, Polly Walker and Paula Malcomson, premieres on the SyFy network on January 22nd of next year.

Black Panther Video and New ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2’ Alternate Costumes

black-panther-mua-1Now that we are aware that Carnage, Cable, and Psylocke are all apart of the downloadable character pack for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and we know the cost and release date, here’s a brand new character to add to that list. Welcome Black Panther, King of the Wakanda Jungle, to the game as a playable character.

Panther is 4 of the 5 alleged add-ons proposed for the game (not including Juggernaut), and will be an interesting addition to the game’s dynamic, especially fighting alongside his in-comic wife, Storm. Magneto is rumored to be the final member to be added to the game, but we’re still waiting for confirmation on that.

Along with the launch video for Black Panther, you can also check out the first images of the alternate costumes for Psylocke, Carnage, and Cable. They are all pretty straightforward, with Cable’s “modern-day” look being the coolest.

Check out all of the images and the launch video after the jump.
