Twitter Giveaway: ‘Pirate Radio’ Official Soundtrack

Pirate2It’s a crime that there are only a dozen or so films about, or involving, the world of broadcast radio. Not too many actually deal with the tribulations of censorship, though, which is where the upcoming film Pirate Radio comes in.

The film is about a group of rogue DJ’s on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic who broadcast a pirate radio station in the 1960s, despite the laws forbidding Rock and Roll…all for the love of music. Given the fact that the film is all about 60’s Rock, you can believe that the soundtrack is pretty killer, and you may get to win a copy!

Starting today, keep an eye on our Twitter account every week for a trivia question involving “Radio in The Movies.” The question may be the name of the radio station from Grosse Point Blank or the name of the epic band in Airheads, you’ll have to know your stuff to get this two-disc soundtrack.

The film, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy, and Emma Thompson, is set to hit theaters on November 13th. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with all kinds of coverage of the film in the leading weeks. Until then, check out the complete track listing of the giveaway after the jump, as well as the trailer for Pirate Radio.

Good Luck, and keep an eye on our Twitter!

Review: ‘A Serious Man’

Stage actor Michael Stuhlbarg is Larry Gopkin

You know how you feel when everyone is in on the joke but you?  That’s how I felt about A Serious Man, the latest film from the talented Coen brothers (most recently known for the Oscar winning No Country For Old Men). Dubbed their first “Jewish” film, this movie begins with a Yiddish parable about a dybbuk.

So you don’t know what a “dybbuk” is? Neither did I, because I’m not Jewish. The film doesn’t tell you what that word means, I had to go look it up later.  I’m not going to go so far as to say you won’t enjoy the movie if you are not Jewish, but I think you will have an inherently better understanding and appreciation for the movie. I found it frustrating that the Coen brothers seem to take at face value that you know all about Jewish traditions and mannerisms, and I felt a little left out.

I admire the fact that the prolific brothers clearly wrote this film as an homage to their Jewish roots, and I got the sense that there was definitely a biographical component to the film. Essentially, this is a modern-day retelling of the Book of Job, which is one of the books of the Hebrew bible.

Anthony Hopkins Is Odin In ‘Thor’

anthony-hopkinsIt shouldn’t be completely surprising that an actor of Anthony Hopkins stature has decided to take the role of Odin, the father of Thor and Loki, in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming big screen adaptation of the comic Thor. After all, famous actors playing parts such as this in big budget fantasy or genre movies is not completely unheard of.

As an example, take a look at the original Clash of the Titans, which featured the great Laurence Olivier as Zeus. Or, how about a little movie called Star Wars, which cast the great Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi. Plus, Hopkins himself has been in a few genre movies previously, including Dracula and The Silence of the Lambs.

In case you’re not familiar with Thor, the film, which is scripted by Mark Protosevich and Zack Stentz, centers on partly disabled med student Dr. Donald Blake’s discovery of his Norse god alter ego, the hammer-wielding Thor. Once he discovers his secret identity, watch out for all hel to break loose.

Thor, featuring Hopkins as well as Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman, hits theaters on May 11, 2011.

Nintendo Announces DSi XL

161980c8bgtThe Nintendo DSi was only just released back in April, but Nintendo has just announced a new version of the handheld console, the Nintendo DSi XL, or DSi LL as it will be known in Japan.

The major change to the DSi XL is the dual screens, which will be over 4 inches across, 93% larger than the current model. The system will come with two styluses, one longer and the standard one we all know and use now. It will also include pre-installed DSiWare software.

I owned a DS and traded it in for a DSi, which I absolutely love. But it’s frustrating that there’s already another version coming out less than a year later with a bigger screen. So for gamers who recently upgraded to the DSi, this new DSi XL probably won’t be too appealing.

But if you’re still rocking a DS Lite or even the fat original DS, this might be the time to upgrade, especially for any titles that might be DSi exclusive in the future.

Japan gets their hands on the DSi XL on November 21st, and will be priced at ¥20,000 (US$220). Nintendo hasn’t priced the unit for Europe or America just yet, but we know it’ll be out first quarter of 2010.

NBC Wants More ‘Chuck’ But No More ‘Trauma’

NUP_111042_1145Medical drama Trauma has been on life support for quite some time, and although it had a glimpse of hope last week as its ratings improved, it looks like the show has flat lined. According to Hollywood Reporter, NBC will not be picking up the show after its 13-episode order.

Good news for NBC’s Chuck, as the show has been picked up for six more episodes. Chuck wasn’t slated to come back until after the Winter Olympics, but now its 19-episode run is rumored to start in January. This news should help patch things up between NBC and Chuck-producers Warner Bros., who recently butted heads over the cancellation of cop drama Southland.

Two other new NBC series, Community and Mercy, have been picked up for full seasons, along with Parks and Recreation, which is in its second season.

Brand New Deleted Scene From ‘Star Trek’

nero_eric_bana_star_trekJ.J. Abrams’ Star Trek looks to be getting the royal treatment for it’s upcoming DVD release. They’re rolling out some pretty intense features for both the DVD and Blu-Ray copies of the film, and now they’re helping market the release with a never-before-seen bonus clip from the film.

In the clip, Nero (Eric Bana) is getting interrogated by-wait for it…Klingons! That’s right, Abrams actually shot footage of Klingons for the film, and then never used it, leaving it for us ultra-nerds to watch on DVD. /Film explains the clip:

JJ Abrams shot a sequence for Star Trek reboot featuring a few members of the infamous alien race, the Klingons. The scene featured Nero [Eric Bana] chained to a table being interrogated by the masked, ruffle-headed creatures with Centurion slugs who are looking to find out information on the future. The sequence basically explained what Nero was up to in the missing years. This is one of the deleted scenes in the prison break sequence that has found its way online to promote the upcoming DVD release.

Check out the full clip after the jump, and be sure to set your wallets to “stun” on November 17th for the DVD and Blu-Ray releases to sweep the nation.

Game Review: ‘DJ Hero’ for XBox360

reply_card [Converted]XBox 360 – Activision – 119.99 (Standard Edition), 199.99 (Renegade Edition)

Score: 9.0

“Holy addictive gameplay Batman!” That’s the first thing that comes to mind after sitting down with DJ Hero for just a few minutes. For those who haven’t been following our DJ Hero coverage here on the Flickcast thus far, is an extension of the Activision Hero franchise that started with Guitar Hero and also now includes Band Hero.

Taking a step back from the full band four player party experience, DJ Hero focuses on the single player experience with little hints of two player action. DJ Hero also comes with a steeper learning curve than the guitar focused games and isn’t going to be the kind of thing someone can hand to an uncoordinated friend and expect them to quickly pick up and play.

Gameplay:

Like Guitar Hero, DJ Hero couldn’t come in to existence without a custom made peripheral to play it. (Well it could, but then it’d be no different from Boom, Boom Rocket for XBLA) Enter the DJ Hero Turntable. Unlike a classic DJ turntable, this one already has a “record” attached with three buttons built in to it.

‘The Guild’ Gets In The Spirit With a Halloween Special

guildRemember the days of ABC’s TGI-Fridays, when they would have a bevvy of Halloween specials every year for each show that almost acted like an Elseworlds story. Drew Carey would be abducted by aliens, or they would find a cloning machine on Two Girls, a Guy, and A Pizza Place? Far gone are those days, so we have to take solace in the little things, like a Guild Halloween special!

That’s right, Felicia Day’s webseries The Guild took the week off from their regular episodes to give us a brand new Halloween special in which the guildies go trick or treating in their local neighborhood. Things get a bit out of hand when every member decides to hit the same house for candy and…other things.

Check out the special after the jump, brought to us by MSN.com. Xbox 360 users can also get the episode in HD through the Xbox Live Marketplace, and for their Zune…if you are one of the 12 people who own one.
