Exclusive: Clancy Brown On Being Lex Luthor in ‘Superman/Batman: Public Enemies’

Picture 1All week we’ve been bringing you an exclusive interview each day with a member of the cast or crew from the upcoming DC Animated DVD Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. From screenwriter Stan Berkowitz to art director Michael Goguen to casting director Andrea Romano and even the voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy. Today, we’ve decided to save a great one for last.

Clancy Brown is both fortunate and unfortunate enough to be recognized by face and voice in TV and film. Fortunate because he’s had enough consistent work since starting acting in 1983, and unfortunate because just about every one of those roles casts him as the bad guy.

From The Kurgen in Highlander to Brother Crowe in Carnivále to Mr. Crabs in Spongebob Squarepants and of course, Lex Luthor in just about every DC Animated production. Check out our interview with Clancy below where he discusses the hardships of always being the bad guy, to his thoughts on other Lex’s, and even who he originally read for back in his first audition for Superman: The Animated Series.

Check back in with us next week for final coverage of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and our review of the DVD, which hit’s stores nationwide Tuesday, September 29th.

Review: ‘Surrogates’

bruce-willis-surrogates

Okay, I think I have the studios figured out. The recent trend toward not screening a movie, or screening it too late for reviewing press to make deadline, must be the studios’ clever attempt at using  reverse-psychology. We (reviewers) are conditioned to believe that any time a movie is not screened or screened last minute, that there must be some horrible problem plaguing the movie, hence their unwillingness to pre-screen it. Such was the case with Surrogates when I saw it last night.

Bracing myself for a stinkbomb, I emerged from the screening and proclaimed to the studio rep: “It was not terrible. I think I kind of liked it.” Hardly a ringing endorsement, to be sure, but I think that is part of their strategy. If they set the expectation bar low, when the movie is not horrible the viewer will be delighted by this welcome surprise.

Surrogates could have been one hell of a movie had it’s intriguing premise been well executed. Despite the film’s flaws, I found it thought-provoking enough that I would definitely recommend it to fans of the sci-fi genre or Bruce Willis.  I absolutely love a movie that makes me think, and this one had my head swimming with the ethical implications of bio-medical research, the prevalence of electronic media in our lives, and our (as a society) startling retreat from one-on-one human interaction.  Any movie that makes me take pause to analyze the message is worthy of a recommendation.

Joss Whedon Promises ‘Buffy Season Nine’ Comic

buffy-season-eight-issue-29-coverIf you’ve been a fan of Joss Whedon and his various creations such as Firefly, Angel, Dollhouse and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, you’re most likely aware that several of these creations have lived on in comic book form after their untimely demise on television. One of the ost popular of these comic book continuations is Buffy: Season Eight, Exec. Produced and occasionally written by Whedon and published by Dark Horse Comics.

With Season Eight scheduled to conclude its run with issue 40, fans are growing concerned that this could be the end of Buffy in comic form. Well don’t worry because Whedon has got you covered. In a recent interview, the creator assured fans of Buffy comics everywhere that he will, indeed, be doing a Season Nine. Although, it might not run quite as long as Season Eight.

“I have had for a long time a conception for Season Nine that is very different from Season Eight,” said Whedon. “It may not run as long, because 40 issues sounds great until you realize that it’s four or five years.” Feel better? Good.

Buffy Season Eight is is comic book stores now.

Sony to Give Free PSP Games To PSPgo Upgraders… in Europe

pspgoWe’ve been talking a lot about the PSPgo here at The Flickcast, both comparing it to the earlier PSP models and discussing problems with its impending release. The biggest issue the PSPgo is facing is the removal of the UMD drive. Because the PSPgo doesn’t allow for the use of UMDs, if you already own PSP games you won’t be able to play them on your new console just yet.

Fans are wary about running out and buy a brand new device without the ability to play the extensive collection of games they already have for it, and retailers in some countries are even refusing to carry the device, citing that they don’t agree with Sony’s download-only sales strategy.

However, Kotaku reports that Sony’s got a solution to this problem… in Europe. Anyone upgrading from the PSP to the PSPgo will recieve three free PSP titles. Seventeen titles are being offered, including Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, WipEout Pure, echochrome, LocoRoco, and Papaton. In order to get your three free games, you’ll need any UMD, an older PSP, and an internet connection to access the Playstation Network.

This solution is certainly better than rebuying all your old PSP games, but for gamers with far more than three PSP games are sure to still feel frustrated. You’ll be able to receive your three free games  from October 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 in European territories. The PSPgo hits shelves October 1st in the US, and we here at The Flickcast hope that Sony will bring this option to us here in America as well.

Wedge to turn a new animated ‘Leaf’ at Fox

Ice Age director Chris Wedge has been tapped to helm Leaf Men, an animated feature that Fox will release through its Fox Animation label, with Blue Sky Studios producing.

Variety is reporting that Wedge’s involvement comes after a lengthy tug-of-war over the project between Fox, Blue Sky Studios (which Wedge co-founded) and Disney-based animation rival Pixar.

Leaf Men is an adaptation of the William Joyce illustrated children’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. The book follows a troop of bugs that try to save a garden and need to battle an evil spider queen. The bugs turn to the mythical Leaf Men to aid them in their quest.

Keep your eyes on The Flickcast for future developments on this animated feature.

Wentworth Miller Getting (Resident) Evil?

Wentworth MillerAs the next installment of the Resident Evil series picks up steam some casting news has been revealed in a somewhat unofficial way. According to actor Boris Kodjoe, Prison Break‘s Wentworth Miller will be appearing in Resident Evil: Afterlife. While nothing official has come out regarding his character there is speculation that he may play Leon Kennedy, a police officer from the video game itself who has yet to appear in any of the films.

Kodjoe also gave an idea of how his character will meet up with Milla Jovovich’s Alice in the new film, “She comes across an LA jail surrounded by [zombies]… and there’s a couple of survivors and she lands on top of the roof and partners up with me to fight the guys that are coming after them. We’re trying to get all of the survivors out of the jail to safety.”

While nothing was said about Miller being part of that jail scene it seems the actor just can’t get away from plots that involve prisons. Kodjoe, also stated that Heroes’ Ali Larter will return to reprise her role as Claire Redfield from Resident Evil: Extinction. No release date has been set for Resident Evil: Afterlife but we’ll keep you posted.

First Trailer for Horror/Comedy ‘Transylmania’

TRANSYLMANIA-final-posterIf you’re a fan of horror/comedies like Night of the Creeps and Scary Movie then this is your lucky day because newcomer Full Circle Releasing has got a movie for you. Transylmania tells the story of a motley group of college students who embark on “the wildest, sexiest, most outrageous semester abroad ever” at Razvan University.

Of course, in true horror/comedy style, the campus isn’t located in a plush, beautiful paradise but instead, deep in the heart of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle. Razvan isn’t your typical institution of higher learning either – and the black leather-clad professors, three-foot-tall dean, instruction in crucifix-wielding, and topless vampiresses lurking in dark corners are just the start.

If you’re curious about the film — and with the above description you should be — we’ve got the first trailer for you after the jump. Transylmania, which features Patrick Cavanaugh, James DeBello, Jennifer Lyons and Musetta Vander, is directed by David and Scott Hillenbrand and hits theaters on December 4th.
