Five iPhone/iPod Touch Apps for Movie Lovers

iphon3gsliv0619111Over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), our other favorite Mac and Apple website, they’ve got a great article which highlights five perfect iPhone and iPod Touch applications geared specifically for movie lovers. Among the items they showcase is Now Playing, an app that lets you purchase tickets, manage your Netflix cue, search for movie times and theaters and more. There’s also another app that seems particularly useful called Flixter.

This one allows you to use GPS to find theaters around you, tells you what’s playing at them and what time. In addition, it gives Rotten Tomatoes ratings, lets you play streaming trailers, browse movies by topic, know when the DVD is coming out and be linked to movie sites. In addition to the practical and useful apps, there’s also one just for fun called MovieLingo. With this one, the screen is set up to look like a two reel slot machine. On the left reel are movie genres and on the right wheel are decades.

Shake your iPhone or iPod Touch and you’ll get a random genre and decade while the app plays an audio snippet of a quote from a film in that category. Try and guess and then click ‘Reveal Movie’ to see if you’re right. Its a fun app that can really test your knowledge of sometimes obscure movies and their dialog.

For the full list, be sure to head on over to TUAW.

Brand New ‘Guitar Hero: Van Halen’ Trailer

Guitar Hero Van Halen - Logo-smallAs video games where you play imaginary instruments in a virtual band continue to gain in popularity, so will the bands that join in the fun and become part of the gaming experience. One such band is the legendary Van Halen, which are joining forces with Activision and their Guitar Hero game to become, you guessed it, Guitar Hero: Van Halen. And we’ve got a brand new video highlighting this partnership for you right here.

In the video, which tells you to “rock out to the biggest hits from one of the most legendary bands of all time” we see and hear your favorite Van Halen songs played by pretty decent likenesses of David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen and David Lee Roth. The game will feature 25 of the band’s hit songs and 3 “signature Eddie Van Halen guitar solos” for you to try and keep up with. Plus, music from a bunch of other bands like Blink 182, Queen, The Offspring, Foo Fighters and more. All in all a pretty cool package.

Seeing as how Eddie Van Halen is regarded as one of the greatest guitar players in the world, it makes sense that the band would decide to join forces and appear in Guitar Hero. After all, Eddie was probably one of the inspirations for the game in the first place. Guitar Hero: Van Halen hits store shelves later this year. Meantime, check out the trailer for the game after the jump.

New Poster for ‘Whiteout’ Revealed

kate-beckinsale-Whiteout-gunWe’ve been anticipating the arrival of the film based on Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber’s graphic novel Whiteout for some time now. Previously, we’ve had some info to share with you about the film, including two trailers and an interview with Lieber about his latest project, Underground, where we also talk a bit about the film.

Now, thanks to the MySpace page of Trailer Park, we’ve got the brand new poster for Whiteout to bring you today. This one features a large Kate Beckinsale close up looking pretty great and also very cold. To be honest, I kinda like some of the earlier posters a bit better but at least this one features more Kate, which is never a bad thing.

The movie, which tells the story of U.S. Marshall Carrie Steko (Beckinsale) investigating the first murder ever to take place in Antarctica, is directed by Dominic Sena and co-stars Gabriel Macht, Columbus Short, Alex O’Loughlin, Shawn Doyle and Tom Skerritt. It hits theaters on September 11.

Ice-T Presents Mac Repair

ice-t-mac-repair

Computers, like most other pieces of complicated technology, occasionally have problems. Fortunately, those problems are, more often than not, confined to our Windows and PC using friends. We Mac users seems to have pretty good luck with our software and hardware.

That’s not to say that the Macintosh doesn’t have any problems. It does. And sometimes, its just not worth the time and effort to fix it — at least to some people. Case in point is this video we’ve got to show you now, uploaded by YouTube’s FinalLevelTV.

In it, rapper/actor Ice-T shows how he takes care of business when his Powerbook is giving him some trouble. His solution is interesting, to say the least, but probably isn’t the best way to fix a broken Mac. Although, he’s famous and rich and I’m not so maybe he’s got the right idea. Maybe.

Check out the video (NSFW) after the jump. And please, if you’re Mac has problems, let us recommend someplace to have it fixed properly. We don’t condone Ice-T’s method and are sure that if he’d just given us a chance, we could have saved his Powerbook. Oh well, too late now.

Weinsteins Partner with Twitter for ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Tweet-Up

inglorious-basterds-poster-1Chances are if you get a lot of your news and entertainment online, you’re probably using one or more of the “social networks” like MySpace or Facebook. If so, you’re also probably using one of the fastest growing online destinations where people interact and “follow” their favorite friends and celebrities. I’m talking, of course, about Twitter.

We’ve got a Twitter account of our very own here at The Flickcast and we’re not alone. Many companies have established a presence on Twitter and send out updates, or ‘Tweets”, whenever they have something new to say or, in our case and many other sites similar to ours, when a new article is published. Many of these companies and celebrities have a huge following on Twitter, so its no surprise that one of them would partner with Twitter for the premiere of its brand new movie.

That’s just what The Weinstein Company is doing next week in conjunction with the premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Inglourious Basterds. According to the company, guests at the Hollywood premiere of the film will “be able to see timely conversations, opinions and experiences as they emerge from the red carpet on special large screens at the premiere and at the exclusive after-party. Twitter-users at home and on mobile devices around the globe can even interact.”

Biz Stone, Twitter co-founder, is equally as excited for the event, saying: “The Weinstein Company’s idea to throw the first ever Red Carpet Tweet-Up for this premiere is brilliant and I’m looking forward to it,” So, if you’re a fan of Tarantino, looking forward to his latest film and love to “Tweet,” be sure to fire up your favorite Twitter application next Tuesday for the Red Carpet Tweet-up and join in the fun.

Fan Film Friday: ‘G.I. Joe’ Spoofs

logoRemember the old G.I. Joe PSA’s that would play after each episode of the series in an attempt to teach kids morals and safety instructions? Remember how truly annoying some of them were? We all do, but now we have a reason to look back at them and laugh. Introducing Fensler Film’s G.I. Joe Spoofs, which are re-cut from the original PSA’s and re-dubbed to be pretty ridiculous but also very funny.

Some of them are pretty random, almost too random to be funny, but for the most part, they are worth a chuckle or two. There are nearly 12 of them, all scattered across the web. We managed to round up a few, including Body Massage, Porkchop Sandwiches (NSFW), and our personal favorite, Computer, which you can check out after the jump.

These all circulated the web a few years ago, and it seems like creator Eric Fensler has moved on to bigger things. They are all still worth watching and knowing about, which is good because knowing is half the battle!

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Absolution’, ‘Exiles’ and ‘Buffy: Season 8’

absolution

For yesterday’s The Pull List, go here.

Absolution #1 – Avatar – $3.99

Score: 8.0

Back in early July, we had the chance to talk to Christos Gage about his creator owned property, Absolution, from Avatar Press. The interview can be read here.  This week, Absolution came to stores and delivered what people were hoping for from the title. Absolution takes a different approach to the superhero genre. Unlike Garth Ennis’ edgy work on The Boys which has superheroes as corrupt drug addicted sexual perverts, Gage reinvents the wheel as he poses the question about what could cause a hero to snap.

Unlike the “heroes” of The Boys, Gage’s hero John Dusk is actually a good person. He uses his powers to save the lives of innocents and defeat bad guys. There is no corporate backing or monetary gain for John by doing it. He is the equivalent of a super powered beat cop. And like some cops who have been on Special Victims Units or the homicide for too long, Absolution explores what it takes to break a man.

The issue begins with John Dusk, the spandex wearing hero seen on the cover of the issue, as he fights White Power, a superpowered white supremacist. John’s powers can be compared to a toned down version of the Green Lantern or the Invisible Woman as he controls his aura around him that allows him to make crude objects with it that can be used both offensively and defensively. When things take a turn for the worst in the fight, John must use lethal force to stop his assailant. Even knowing the criminal is a rapist and murder, John still tries to keep him from dying until he sees two of White Powers captives, causing him to make a decision he can never step back from.
