Review: ‘Year One’

If a movie has Judd Apatow’s name somewhere in the credits, it’s bound to make me laugh hard enough to pee my pants. I just associate his name with the type of comedic quality that I’ve seen in movies like Superbad, Pineapple Express, and Role Models. So between that and the fact that the movie has some incredible casting in Michael Sera and Jack Black, I had some pretty high expectations going into Year One. Those expectations, unfortunately, were set a bit too high.

The plot of Year One is pretty predictable. This caveman named Zed, (Jack Black), and his sidekick Oh, (Michael Cera) get kicked out of their caveman village after breaking some rules. After they leave and discover the big wide world outside of their primitive village (including several biblical figures and places that didn’t exist during the time of the cavemen), their home gets destroyed and their girlfriends get kidnapped. The rest of the movie revolves around them rescuing these girlfriends while also learning a little bit about themselves.

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With ‘The Spectacular Spider-Man’ Josh Keaton

We recently got a chance to chat with Josh Keaton, the voice actor who, as of late, has been lending his pipes as the titular hero in Disney XD’s The Spectacular Spider-Man. He spoke about playing the character, the laundry list of cameos, and which other characters he’d love to voice in the world of comics.

The Flickcast: Playing a character like Spider-Man has got to be a big deal for anybody who knows the character, are you a fan of the comic?

Josh Keaton: I am. I grew up as a huge fan of Spider-Man, and I’m still a huge comic book geek, so it’s definitely a really cool thing to be able to say “Hey, I’m Spider-Man!”

TF: You’re not only known for playing Spider-Man, but you also have a cool Spidey-themed ride, correct?

JK: [laughing] Oh, yea. I have a Mini Cooper, and I like how everybody puts big graphics on the flat roof, so I have the poster art from season one of Spectacular Spider-Man up there. Also, my license plate reads “THWIPP”.

TF: Very cool. Being a voice actor, do you find yourself changing demeanor between Peter Parker and his costumed alter ego?

JK: A little bit. It’s not so much a physical change in the voice as much as an attitude shift. When he’s Spider-Man, he has a lot more confidence, and at first he’s that way because he’s able to do all the things that Peter Parker can’t do, but as the show progresses it starts changing a bit where he has to play up his “dorky side” as Peter to continue to conceal the fact that he is Spider-Man.

Gary Busey Laughs It Up for ‘Saints Row 2’

gary-busey-attacks In the world of “celebrities” Gary Busy, who used to have a very respectable acting career and still has an Oscar nomination, is now known more for his somewhat eccentric behavior rather than his acting. Still, sometimes that behavior is a plus — especially when he’s plugging a video game which also contains a bit of eccentric behavior. Case in point, this video of Busey doing a promo for THQ’s Saints Row 2 free DLC ‘Unkut Pack.”

In the video, Busey pretty much sticks to what he does best these days and laughs maniacally over and over to help you realize the importance of laughter and the level of fun and excitement you’re going to get from this game once you’ve downloaded the new pack of enhancements and options to clothing, jewelry, tattoos, etc.

But really, my description of what he’s doing can’t do it justice. You just need to watch it for yourself and revel a bit in the crazy. Check out the video after the jump.

Saints Row 2 is available wherever video games are sold. The DLC “Unkut Pack” is available as a free download on Xbox Live and PS3.

DVD Review: Broken Lizard’s ‘Puddle Cruiser’

Puddle-Cruiser If you haven’t seen Super Troopers, Club Dread or Beerfest, you’re probably not familiar with the comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard. Since their college days, Jay Chandrasekhar (Director, Dukes of Hazzard), Kevin Heffernan, Stephen Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske have been making people laugh and sometimes, making a movie or two. I first became familiar with their work when a colleague told me to check out Super Troopers.

I scoffed. It sounded stupid. Then, late one night on cable, Super Troopers was on, so I gave it a chance. I was right. It was stupid. It was also one of the funniest little films I’d seen in a very long time. After drinking the Kool Aid and becoming a member of the Broken Lizard fan club, I scoured the internet to find a copy of their first film, Puddle Cruiser. On some crappy website where I think I paid $5, I was able to see the crew’s maiden film in all it’s inexperienced glory. You know what, it was pretty good.

This 1996 comedy features Steve Lemme as Felix Bean, an average guy who loves a girl. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff. The charm of this movie, filmed entirely on the Colgate University campus, is in the subtle humor and the likability of the cast. From the opening scene with 70’s porn music playing in the background, to the final clip, it draws you into the silliness of these five college buddies and their exploits.

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

dylan-dog-cover There is a new Barnes and Noble that just opened up in my neighborhood. Its built into an apartment building, one of three such glass & metal monstrosities recently built in the Upper East Side, with escalators that take you underground. So, at least if the events of The Day After Tomorrow ever happen (and Al Gore increasingly convinces me that they might) we’ll at least have a place to take cover.

Anyway, this new B & N is a MALL. A mall of books. Two floors, God-knows how many square feet of DVDs, books, graphic novels, film script collections, and pretty much everything ever printed. To say the least, I blacked out somewhere between the hours of one and four this afternoon.

My first recommendation is the first book I came away with: The Dylan Dog Case Files, published by Dark Horse Comics. Translated from Italian, Dylan Dog is a supernatural detective that hunts monsters in the Louisiana Bayou. Created by Tiziano Sclavi, Dylan is being brought to life by Superman himself, Brandon Routh in the movie Dead of Night.

My second recommendation is Detective Comics #854, which introduces the new creative team of Whiteout writer Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams III. The book also features Rucka’s creation from the pages of 52, Batwoman. If you happened to make it to New York Comic Con this past February you were treated to the delights of the first few pages of what is sure to be a downright beautiful book. First Teaser for ‘The Last Airbender’

last-airbender-movie Premiering on Entertainment Tonight last night was a new teaser for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. And now, thanks to the marvels of modern technology (i.e. YouTube) we’ve got the teaser for you right here, just in case you weren’t watching ET. And really, with all the great news and insight here at The Flickcast, why would you be? Don’t answer that. We know you think Mary Hart is hot.

In case you’re not familiar with the movie, The Last Airbender is a live-action film version of Nickelodeon’s animated series of the same name. It follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang, who is an Avatar, one of the chosen who will lead his people, and his friends. In a world divided into warring tribes, Aang and his friends must save the world by defeating the Fire Lord and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

The original series ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon and spawned several tv movies and three video game tie-ins. In other words, it was pretty popular. Expect The Last Airbender in theaters on July 2, 2010. Check out the teaser, sadly without Mary Hart, after the jump. Also, expect the full trailer for the film to run in front of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starting this Wednesday.

Bryan Fuller Quits ‘Heroes’

bryan-fuller The folks over at TV Squad have confirmed an earlier AICN report that former Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller has left NBC’s Heroes for the second, and presumably last, time in order to pursue those infamous “other projects.” Which, according to further reporting on this by EW’s Daivd Ausiello, might actually be the case.

According to Ausiello, Fuller left Heroes to focus on developing two other project for NBC and not, as had been reported at various places, due to “creative differences” with series creator Tim Kring.

“I’m crafting two pilots right now and it’s a lot of work,” admitted Fuller, who has an overall deal with NBC. “It was just too hard to [juggle] Heroes and my development; something had to give.”

Fuller, who returned to Heroes last December after ABC canceled his show, was considered one of the key reasons why Heroes seemed to find its way a bit towards the end of the last season. Not ever having seen his other show, I can’t say for sure one way or the other if his influence helped Heroes.

Still, something must have happend because the show did get better. if it was Fuller, then his departure makes me worry about how Heroes will be when it returns. Guess we’ll find out soon enough. The new season of Heroes kicks off this Fall on a new night and time: Mondays at 8/7c.
